Had my DC 5 or six years before the igniter went out. Here's how I fixed it. Disassemble the entire unit. Discovered it was a major pain in the ass to replace. (Good luck reassembling) and took the whole thing to the dump. I figure 5 or 6 years is a good life, so I may get another one.
Thanks so much. Especially the be careful parts. I used duct tape and a string to draw igniter wires thru and drag the wires back thru and did not have to take off the fan.
Glad you were able to get it replaced Connor. Hoping the replacement one has a longer life than the original for you. Any future questions please let us know. Thanks!
It is a shame that I have already had to replace the control board, the fan and now the igniter is being shipped so I can replace it under warranty, the grill is only about 6 months old. I spent an hour on Christmas Eve and Christmas day manually lighting the pellets. All I had at the camp site was a small butane torch, and the only reason I had that was because I had my RV service van with me. Now that I'm home waiting on the igniter, I needed to use it again and with a full size propane torch I was able to light it in just a couple of minutes. What really sucks is that all the inner stuff has to be removed to expose the pellets to light it manually. When redesigned some sort of access port to light it manually would be appreciated.
Thanks for message, very sorry to hear of the difficulties and failures you've had at this stage with the Davy Crockett. Hoping you now see years of trouble free enjoyment with the replacement parts. Thanks for the suggestion on manual light options, we can certainly pass along to GMG. Any questions or assistance needed moving forward please let us know. Thanks!
I’ve had my Daley Crockett for less than a year. Replaced the controller. Igniter jurist quit working, last cook total over heat. I’ve spent hours on the phone with customer service and technicians. Now I have to dissembled the unit to do my own warranty work to install igniter . I have 4 other smokers and 2 other pellet grills was looking forward to having a portable unit . I think i have wasted my time and money .
Hey John, sorry to hear about the difficulty you have been having. Personally I have two Davy's, 1 is 6 years old the other is just a year. I haven't needed to replace any parts yet and the Davy has been my go-to over my other grills & smokers. Like anything, car, lawnmower, etc.. things can fail or go bad. Overall reviews on the Davy are very high. We are happy to assist with service support as well if needed. I think you will really enjoy the Davy once everything is up an running again. Thanks, Mr. Pellethead
Mine was less than a year old before the igniter went bad and the outside started to rust. Their customer service said they’d send me some paint. Will be buying a Traeger next time.
Basically Ive used mine 4 times this camping season and replacing the ignitor already. I have a portable Traeger also and its still going. I guess thats obvious since im watching a replace ignitor video. Starting it by torch creates a lot of smoke and the camp hosts complain since there is a no comp fire policy...
Took my less than 3 year old Davy Crockett to the dump due to the new igniter which is not a correct replacement for the grill. They drooped support for a grill still under warranty !!
Thanks for contacting us. If the grill is under the 3 year warranty, your dealer should be able to handle that for you. If you're having difficulties with the dealer you can call or email GMG direct. They have been superb with making sure their customers are taken care of. Here is the direct contact info greenmountaingrills.com/contact/
I wish you would tell the failure rate these David Crocs have been out they're very good machine I use it all the time but there has to be a failure rate how often does the temperature gauge or the igniter how often does all this and the screw how often does it go out what is required what is the life expectancy of the entire grill when does it become not cost-effective to keep repairing it tell us the stuff you don't want us to know
Thanks for the message. There's nothing we don't want you to know; we appreciate transparency just like our customers do. We are glad you asked these questions. The life expectancy of the components and grill as a whole greatly depends on two things. 1. How often the grill is used. 2. How well the user takes care of the grill. (Cleaning inside and out/Protection from elements.) Pellet fuel also comes into the mix. Important to be using quality food grade pellets without binders/additives. Important not to use flammable liquids in the burnpot as well. I would say the average customer that uses the grill frequently would generally see 3-6 years out of the igniter, combustion fan, auger motor, and thermal sensor. We've seen some that had to replace one of these components in less than a year and others where they all lasted 10 years or more. Regarding the control board, as long as it doesn't get wet or a receive a power surge, they generally are pretty solid for many years. Again I've seen failures in less than a year, and I have seen some go 10 years. The auger shaft and firepot we sell very few of - as long as good pellet fuel is being used and foreign objects aren't getting in the fuel hopper, these components will go a very long time. Heat baffle, grease tray, cooking grates I would say 4-8 years on average before most folks decide to replace. If the exterior of the grill is well maintained and covered from the elements, the body should go 10 years plus with no issues. I personally had one of the very early Davy Crockets, about 10 years old. Didn't take great care of it. I went through 2 igniters and 1 control board in that time, everything else was solid. Body got pretty worn down and rusty and the legs stopped holding the grill up in the end. I was grilling in the rain a bit and wasn't keeping it covered all the time. I decided to part it out and keep the components as spares, but still the body of the grill was solid, no holes or burn-throughs. I would say replacement parts for GMG are fairly reasonable price-wise if/when needed and they do have a good factory warranty as well. Any other questions please let us know. Hope that helped. Thanks,

Glad you were able to get it replaced Connor. Hoping the replacement one has a longer life than the original for you. Any future questions please let us know. Thanks!

Thanks Brian. Good note, if you have any specific questions we are always happy to assist.

To bad we can’t see anything. Great commentary tho! 👍🏾
Glad it was helpful - working on more camera angles for future videos to assist in seeing more details. Thanks so much!
