I bet a lot of people were expecting him to enumerate tons of black metal bands. But I mean, they were the first wave of black metal, of course they grew up on other things. I also liked how open minded his choices were. As well as his description of Depeche Mode lol. Pure gold.
I like how some people are surprised by his musical influences/choices. I don't care what genre of music you play, there will always be artists from an era you grew up with who will stick with you forever, regardless if you were a fan at the time or not. There's shit I don't even want to admit I listen to, but I do because I grew up with it and can appreciate it on another level now that I'm older.
You are surprised because you are probably not that well-informed about the black metal scene of the time. It has always been quite well-known that the black metallers of the time had a very widespread love for music, that encompassed almost everything from classic heavy metal and classic rock to 70s electronic music, techno, 80s post punk, and finally to even classical music.
Genres are for elitists, music is for EVERYONE! :) This is great episode! :) BTW: I love the fact that during this whole interview, there is album from Abbath behind him! :D Abbath is everywhere! :D

JAYJAY TEE I'm shocked as well! I like Mayhem alot, and I never thought one of the posterboys for trve kvlt black metal would like so such diverse music. Maybe thats why they are a cut above most black metal bands. They just have a broader musical horizon.
My brother and I met Jørn on a random night in Oslo back in June '19 after a long hike in Gjersjøen. Funny enough, all we talked about was Depeche Mode lol
You should bring VOIVOD!!! They are a very influential band and they have inspired countless bands even outside Metal. Not to mention that also Voivod has been inspired by lots of bands. That diversity and unique sound is reflected because of their huge taste in music. Believe me that if you get Voivod to the show, it would be a great episode. Every member of the band has a great and diverse taste in music, and they're so kind, cool and friendly guys. We are connected!
When I used to listen to them, their music and art style of their album cover made some weird world in my head, creating continuation stories for each song in this world. Man, that was so weird, having this pictures and music fusing together WITHOUT drugs - I never even tried. Voivod is a super weird band, in a good way weird.
Depeche Mode is one of the darkest bands ever. Very depressing but in a good way. They're the masters of fantastic melodies. Even Necrobutcher knows that.
INXS! Michael Hutchence forever! This makes me love Mayhem that much more. So glad I finally got to see them last year. Best Black Metal show I’ve ever seen.
Man, that's wild, i just started listening to black metal and the reason was that never a music genre helped me get through some emotions. I was really confused first, cause actually my music taste was based on talking heads, tears for fears, the doors, etc. Now i can almost see what all these bands have in common. I still don't know but I'll keep looking.
You might hate me for what I say but... He's always been the best of all Mayhem members and whenever I hear about this band he's the first person that pops up in my mind.
Everyone hating on Deafheaven but Necrobutcher buying the least black metal albums in Amoeba. Now what does that say about the (black) metal community? Fact of the matter is if you limit yourself to one genre of music means your as interesting as multiple sclerosis. Just because you compose a certain type of music doesn't mean you only listen to the genre you make. If Necrobutcher can listen to Talking Heads, I'm sure you don't always have to listen to edgy face paint dudes all day either. I like black metal, traditional or otherwise but the community sucks.
I guess you can say I'm a Black Metal guy. I have been listening and writing it for years and I can't stand a very large amount of the fans. They people who get into it because its edgy edgeboi stuff and nothing else.
Fangalatic no, there are people that call themselves "elitists" and are the kind of pieces of shit who try to humiliate other people for listening to what's not "true" like Myrkur or any non-black metal stuff. It's retarded but I've seen that a lot. And most of times they were not more "ilustrated"than the other as the other people spent more time finding other bands and styles and those "elitists" only listened to the same 4 basement bands forever.
I will never understand people who rag on others for listening to a diverse range of music... That's the beautiful thing about music!! The new mayhem sounds like a cover band now
Uncle Necrobutcher, family friendly version
The Cult never get enough credit
imre456 completely agree. Really a standout rock band from the 80’s imo
true
Matt Sorum the drummer for the Cult was recruited by Guns n Roses. He did a phenomenal job
Amen
Very influential, talented, and criminally underrated!
Mayhem fan here, Necrobutcher has a fantastic collection in his bag. Depeche Mode, INXS, Beasties.... great stuff!
...Meanwhile somewhere in Norway, Dead and Euronymous are rolling in their graves...
Necrobutcher has always seemed live the most levelheaded and open minded member of Mayhem.
Both Mannheim and NecroButcher were the only sane minded people in that band.
@@NyqWill95 And Fenriz is the only sane person in that whole scene! And of course I like Necro a lot too
True, others are edgelords
@SuperSaxon Thrasher666 he was probably exaggerating dude. And i dont think you know what schizophrenia really is if thats your conclusion
he’s a literal racist and antisemite LMFAOOO no way in hell is he “open minded” or “levelheaded”
This is the best "What's in my bag" ever, by far the best selection, and Necrobutcher is a hell of a character.
wow he seems like a great guy! We need more of this in the metal community. People who don't take themselves too seriously, who are not bounded by genres and are not trying to look tough all the time. Take it easy
Actually a lot of musicans from the 2nd wave of black metal are fans of classics like The Beatles, The Police etc., and Necro is not an exception.
A black metalist enjoying a Talking Heads album, wow. I feel normal now LOL
because black metallers only are allowed to listen to grim and raw black metal... oh!
I don't know why this is such a surprise, he is a person with tastes just like you and me.
I met this guy at a party called PRSPCT and there is only Breakcore, Drum n Bass & Hardcore! pretty awesome when i saw him there
Very likely black metal for him is just his job now. In his house he just listens to whatever the hell he wants even if it is not "kvlt"
He grabbed my favorite Ministry album,, Cannibal song still takes me on a trip
Genres are for elitists, music is for EVERYONE! :) This is great episode! :)
BTW: I love the fact that during this whole interview, there is album from Abbath behind him! :D Abbath is everywhere! :D
Yesss. No way you couldnt see that one! Abbath has being Immortal down. Wonder whats there 3 yrs later? Maybe the new Immortal or last yrs Abbath. lol, like anyone will ever read this in 3 yrs!
Thank you, Necrobutcher! I keep returning to your calmness and love of music!
I'm into extreme metal but I LOVE Nina Simone and Sam Cooke they are absolute legends. I think metal heads are the most open minded people
erik from watain has metioned nina simone by name multiple times in interviews
Not metal. A musician always look for good music despite the style
Awesome! …..I wasn't expecting a member of Mayhem to have such diverse taste.
JAYJAY TEE I'm shocked as well! I like Mayhem alot, and I never thought one of the posterboys for trve kvlt black metal would like so such diverse music. Maybe thats why they are a cut above most black metal bands. They just have a broader musical horizon.
hollywoodraptor0016 euro was the most metalhead in the band only "likes" true metal music supposedly
@@edybocman76 Euro loved Kraftwerk tf are you talking about. Euro was deep into Electronica, even played synth, to Deads dismay.
Loved the part about Chuck.
you cant go wrong with Depeche Mode.
My brother and I met Jørn on a random night in Oslo back in June '19 after a long hike in Gjersjøen. Funny enough, all we talked about was Depeche Mode lol
I listen to
10% rap
10% indie/folk/acoustic
10% country
20% rock/alternative
20% punk/hardcore
30% metal
Depends on my mood.
How can you tell so exactly? Do you use a tracking program?
Cut indie, rap, alternative and maybe but maybe country and we're good to go!
same here man.
@@vonbl3 loser
@@ambskater97 Touched a nerve, snowflake?
Abbath is staring Necrobutcher from the back
Abbath is an alcoholic clown.

Pølcifer Pøffer atleast he’s not sober
Caprise - Music I thought he was in rehab
@@plciferpffer3048 A drunk yet one of the greatest BM vocal and guitar sooo there is that
Time for Immortal to do a What's in my Bag
you mean Immortal or Abbath? because Abbath left Immortal kinda 3 years ago...
Oh right...I forgot about that...so I guess what I meant to say is I'd love to see Abbath on here
Probably crystal meth
Only KISS albums! :p
Tones of makeup, amphetamines and a pile of Elvis Presley records.
Another Thrasher Guy I love Voivod, cannot wait for the new album.
Fabio Dewitt when is it?
"The Wake" will be released in September.
Shill
When I used to listen to them, their music and art style of their album cover made some weird world in my head, creating continuation stories for each song in this world. Man, that was so weird, having this pictures and music fusing together WITHOUT drugs - I never even tried. Voivod is a super weird band, in a good way weird.
That police album is unreal. Great music taste! Necro seems like a real cool guy.
His music taste is beautiful!
@varg says you lmao
Depeche Mode is one of the darkest bands ever. Very depressing but in a good way. They're the masters of fantastic melodies. Even Necrobutcher knows that.
The funny thing is that i've been listening to them when i was 4, so
I was a depressed millennial before i was an actual depressed millennial 😂
i'd consider them more whiny and pretentious tbh
I just can't imagine Necrobutcher singing the Beastie Boys haha.
The most notorious band (back in the day) Mayhem, and the bassist likes Beasty Boys, hell yeaaah
I am very impressed by your music choice, Necrobutcher! I gotta be honest, I never expected the Beastie Boys! Hell yeah, dude!!
"What's in my bag?"
*Reveals plans to kill Euronymous*
This comment snuck up on me. 😂😂😂 Touché
INXS! Michael Hutchence forever! This makes me love Mayhem that much more. So glad I finally got to see them last year. Best Black Metal show I’ve ever seen.
Evry true metalhead appreciates the cult and talking heads
trve*
And Depeche Mode!
Chuck Schuldiner is God
Irrelevant.... But true
@@krustymatthews1686 if you watch the video necro mentions chuck...
Overrated, just like his music.
He is the godfather of death metal
He didn't die he just went back to his heavenly kingdom
You might hate me for what I say but... He's always been the best of all Mayhem members and whenever I hear about this band he's the first person that pops up in my mind.
To know Jørn is a fan of Beastie Boys is insane. Much love.
He is so cool.
Love his taste in music.
Open minded guy who really loves music.
That is great to see
Fenriz would be perfect his music selection would be amazing to see
Everyone hating on Deafheaven but Necrobutcher buying the least black metal albums in Amoeba.
It's say nothing you moron
It says black metallers don't listen to only black metal. Just like any other normal person.
That they take inspiration from everywhere and not their own genre.
I guess you can say I'm a Black Metal guy. I have been listening and writing it for years and I can't stand a very large amount of the fans. They people who get into it because its edgy edgeboi stuff and nothing else.
Fenriz has even said he listens to everything, he just doesn't slap it in the middle like every other artist.
Excellent picks all round. Can’t beat Paul’s Boutique!
that's all folks That is class man, thanks for sharing!
You can tell that he sincerely loves music and is an authentic musician.
Mayhem has great taste in music. Iconic album choices🖤
Totally.
Fear Of Music was always my favorite Talking Heads album after '77
Same. Gonna listen to it now.
I love the bassline in Mind, simple, yet so good.
This is one of these records where every song has something special. It's like a box of Quality Street, but with actually good toffee.
It doesn't even matter who it is. This series is amazing
Necrobutcher: what's in my bag?
*Reveals plans to kill Euronymous*
He looks like an older ninja
He has great music taste❤
I absolutely love this. It's amazing how black metal elitism is such a stupid ass concept.
what?
Fangalatic no, there are people that call themselves "elitists" and are the kind of pieces of shit who try to humiliate other people for listening to what's not "true" like Myrkur or any non-black metal stuff. It's retarded but I've seen that a lot. And most of times they were not more "ilustrated"than the other as the other people spent more time finding other bands and styles and those "elitists" only listened to the same 4 basement bands forever.
Fangalatic How can one be envy and ignorant at the same time?
But muh kvlt! 🤘😂👍
Best Ministry album.
*cough* TWITCH *cough*
YogDodoth Nah, and like that album
Filth Pig
Dark Side Of The Spoon
Ministry is best! I love the new album where they mock Donald Drumfff and show some support to ANTIFA! :)
It is, but Test is one of their worst songs
He basically has a pretty average taste for a norwegian dude who grew up in the 70s-80s
a-ha
No

And we're living in the best time for music discovery because you can access almost anything ever produced at your fingertips. Bandcamp, TH-cam, etc. you can unlock treasures everyday! God I fucking love music lol
What a nice guy :D
A Watain t-shirt, apropos of that do Watain/Erick. And please please Attila Csihar some day too.
Attila would be really interesting for sure
Attila is so awesome, and his vocals have gotten better through the years. Him and Necrobutcher seem like sweethearts.
Too bad Mayhem is just entertainment today (words by Erick himself when he got to tour with them).
Attila's would be awesome. He's in to a lot of experimental and electronic/industrial/noise shit.
necro has that face that can both make him look like a cool dad, or a grave digger. 💀
He loves the beastie boys. Cant wait to show this to all those close minded "true metalheads"
Some people just don't like other genres. What's wrong with that?
You've got to fight... for your right... TO PARTY!
@@migowixch1526 You've obviously never seen a metal elitist before lol. They listen to *exclusively* the most underground and most low budget out there. If you even hint that you like something else, they bully you for it.
I remember when their first album .First white boys rapping to heavy metal music. If it is strange or fresh I like it. I burn out on music fast so I need to keep finding new stuff.
