Great memories from the Butte. Lived there for seven years. I was a Hotshot, worked on and in the Red Lady. And a lot of stuff I can't talk about. Seeing Murdoch made me smile, who knew what a legend he would become. Also meeting guys like Townes Van Zandt at Mayor Willy's. CB as close to heaven I'll ever get ✌
Here's some clarification on the source of this video (both parts 1 and 2). There was a film crew accompanying the ride on a flatbed truck. I don't remember who they were. Following the ride, the film crew provided Murdoch with an informal tape. The film crew also produced a documentary for cable including some or all of the material on the informal tape. Murdoch provided me with a VCR-to-VCR copy of the informal tape, which I sat on for 30 years before posting it to TH-cam. Dr Paddle
Elk ave has changed allot, the valley has changed allot, but the "spirit of the butte" is alive and well in the hearts of the true locals - CB is my spirit town
Neil Murdock AKA Richard Banister what a trip !! used to tinker around in his shop as a kid. then i found out about all his skeletons. crazy man !!!!!!!!!!!!!! he was always cool to me.
This video should be credited to Dana Atchley and crew and the company, Network TV. The piece was sponsored by Suntour bike components. Please credit it accordingly!
Thank you for crediting Dana -- Tapley Dawson worked with him as well. We love and miss Dana! Also, Tapley, his brothers and mom Patricia were our next door neighbors and lifelong friends beginning in 1972 in Crested Butte. Tapley's brother Lou was the first guy to ski every Colorado fourteener! Thanks for these memories!
We probably ran into each other, cleekmaker00, as I did Crested Butte for the last time in '84. Still have the bike I rode then, too. I posted photos to retrobike.co.uk -- just search for drpaddle. There's also a photo there of the bike I rode in these vids from 1980. Glad you appreciated the video.
I just started riding, on a Specialized Fuze. These people were the brave ones, looked like they were having fun, regardless of tech. Where's that Hagen Daz girl?, she's got to be in my league by now.
This is really some great history. Thanks for putting it together. I still have the original EARTH STATION RADIO Klunker. And, the COLORADO PRESS PLATE is still on the handle bars. You did a great job here.. If you need more of 70's Crested Butte era visit the EARTH STATION RADIO videos on TH-cam. The Professor
Just clicked the 420-th thumbs up last night! Appropriate! (No more!) When these guys were developing their klunkers, I was pushing my Mongoose BMX bike up the local hills complaining, "Why don't they put GEARS on these things!" Oh what could have been! (I also should have invented the Camelback, but that's another story...) I was looking at a picture on Ibis' website of one of the Crested Butte events that named almost everyone in the photo. Cool that I know a few of 'em. And lo and behold, there was "Adlai Karim!" (Looks like him at 1:47) The dude who runs (or ran, or barely runs) "Karim Cycles" in Berkeley. Never knew the dude was THERE from the beginning! OK, now it makes sense. Before learning that, I never understood why this drug-addled dude ran a shady bike shop in Berkeley. The more you know!
Highly sophisticated pieces of machinery. At the time yeah. No matter what year it is whatever you're talking about is state of art. 40 years people will be laughing at our super sweet bikes of today. And electrics will come way down in price when the technology improves and production gets cheaper.
His name is Howie Hammerman. According to IMDB the belch was for E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, but since he worked for the sound effects crew on Star Wars, he would also be Jabba.
Howie just participated in the ride, not in the filming. (I'm not even now 100% sure that this was the year I met him, as I went to four or five of these events.) I really don't know who was involved in the filming: just a film crew in a truck accompanying the ride. I expect Murdoch would remember a name if you wanted to ask him. I'm sure you would have no problem finding a mailing address, as he hasn't moved around much lately.
@klunkerbill See "Gary Fisher's Long Strange Trip" video on TH-cam. It's entertaining. Other folks have found copies of this Crested Butte 1980 video, as well. drpaddle
Are you sure Howie Hammerman had something to do with this video? I met him when I was making KLUNKERZ and he never mentioned it. Charlie Kelly never mentioned it, either. Those guys knew I was paying for footage for the film. Odd. These are wonderful pieces of cycling history. Thanks for posting these super cool videos.
I do not own this footage. I received a VHS copy of the documentary from Murdoch soon after the ride, then digitized it many years later. Somebody must have a clean copy of the documentary, but I don't know who that would be.
I don't remember the guy's name, nor am certain about which one he is. Been too long. However, he worked for Industrial Light and Magic. The Marin guys who see this may identify him.
Every now and again TH-cam just makes the world a better place....this is an absolute gem 👌👍

My eternal gratitude for posting this. Showing my sons how much fun we used to have. Before mtn biking was a “sport”.
Thanks so much for posting this! Super inspirational. I love all the old MTB history stuff. Got more?
I did the ride in 1984.....changed my life forever.
Almost 49, my MTB was, is and always will be my emotional rescue. Thank you LORD!
Jesus Christ rode a mountain bike

I love the simplicity of the Klunker Bicycle. I still ride old cruiser bicycles today. Really fun.

a wonderful time to be alive.
Oh man, this brings back heavy memories of being a kid with a bike in the late 70s early 80s. Very cool stuff here.
I did the ride in 1984, changed my life forever, and rode into Aspen with one of the worst hangovers of my life.
Best vid on you tube thanks for posting
Just discovered this video and really enjoyed it! I wish I could find handlebars like these for my Trek 930
I have one of those too
Man I really feel like some Haagen Das right now, can't think why.

That dude at the end totally took a hit.
I watch this video almost weekly to get my head right. Done this ride a bunch of times on titanium and it's no joke.

Klunk-Life🤘
Should have used "Bicycle Race" by Queen as the music on this one.
@drpaddle , How can I get in touch with you? is this your footage?
I do not own this footage. I received a VHS copy of the documentary from Murdoch soon after the ride, then digitized it many years later. Somebody must have a clean copy of the documentary, but I don't know who that would be.

Funny how bike tech hasnt really changed too much in 30 years.

Haagen Dazs. OMG.
@designmike2003 The hagen daz girl is still really hot
Before the drugs came. SNOW.SHAME
My taint hurts just watching this. No chamois or even a stitch of lycra to be seen on that ride. People were tougher back then.
That America does not exist anymore
Now you have all these Strava douches and weight weenies. "I need the carbon pedal so I can shave a millionth of a gram off my bike."
these people must all be baby boomers
