      @@DrewPan I don't know, it puzzled me, I always collapsed and couldn't find prosperous success as I did in 2k and 3k. The auto street wiring was a bit messy. In terms of ambiance and soul it also didn't reach the godly status of 2000. I was younger and there is a first exposition bias, but 3000 was excellent and brought so much to the table. SC4 however lives me bitter; and worst still, the last version "sim city", I played 2 hours and that's it. It's not interesting and has lost many details and all engagement.

    • @DrewPan
      @DrewPan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@vindieu I think the difference between 4 and it's predecessors is that 4 wasn't designed to build single cities. You had to juggle a nation of cities that help each other. A lot of cities don't have the land available to be totally self sufficient, so you'll have people going to find jobs in neighboring cities, or buying additional water or electricity from another town. I doubt I'm the only person who had a garbage city, whose sole purpose was to burn and recycle rubbish. All its income comes from being paid by other cities.

    I used to play this game all of the time when I was younger in middle school mostly. I remember all of these tracks very well. During the final week of classes one year in high school, one of our teachers had us form small groups and have a Sim City 2000 competition. We had computers in that classroom. He graded based on all kinds of things, including the city budget. My two teammates just let me take over and we won the competition with ease. I think we got donuts as our reward. I was king for the day. That must have been back in the year 1999-2001 or something. I still listen to this music when I work at my computer sometimes.

    If you listen carefully, you may spot that absolutely *every* song has a pentatonic-based melody. This basically means it can be played using only the black keys on a piano. If you have no piano skills, try these!
    This makes all the tracks feel like they "fit" together-but I imagine also made them much easier to compose! (Sometimes an extra note is added to the scale, there is an obvious one in Serious Sims.)

    • @Variusak
      @Variusak 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh, no problem at all.
      I love SC2000 in all forms both DOS and Win95. DOS is just what I grew up with. If I remember correctly, I had a 4x CD drive so it took forever and occasionally things would lag when it would switch audio tracks in game.
      I sort of wish I hadn't gotten rid of that PC. It would have been great for the other DOS games I had that have issues with the faster CPUs of today (like SimCopter).

    • @jenpromojepoteseni2263
      @jenpromojepoteseni2263 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Variusak Interesting :D. I know that nostalgia. I wasnt playing dosgames when I was a child. Just online games :D (I am the new generation :D). But about 3 years before I discovered the dosgames. I played them the most when I had a flash internet with a small capacity (about 10gb) so it was slow and I had to download only small things. I already discovered Dosbox and played DOS games at that time, but I with that slow internet I realized that there is a TON of fun in few MBs. That was awesome. I think i just remembered the Space commander now :D. And RED BARON for sure that was pure awesomnes.
      But thats not nostalgia. Thats present for me :D because I am still playing that as you can see. BUT I wanted to say that I have that nostalgia feeling when I am watching VHS cassetes. I dont know. Its crappy. The movies are awfully cut to 4:3. But its still so great to watch that crappy quality :D. That really reminds me my childhood.

      ***** Well said. Anyway there were two games where you could drive in your city. I played only one Simdriver, Sim... I dont remember the name. But that game was bad. The only good thing was that you were in YOUR CITY ! WHOOO HOOO ! But the buildings were monotonic and in some cases a bit depressive :D. But still good fun for 15 minutes... to see your city in 3D :D.
      And in my honest opinion. The best disaster was a fire. Its a real challenge :D. How did you put out the fire ? I played SC2 yesterday when I had only 2 firemen. Well my city is really big but I had to cut out the half of the it by small water squares (as often... its the best option to put out the fire. Block it by water squares :D). So how do you do it ? :D

    • @jenpromojepoteseni2263
      @jenpromojepoteseni2263 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** So do you like ticker or newspaper more ? :D Sorry I didnt understand that :D. Anyway as I wrote before as other reply, for me the news in SC 2000 are bad. You can do everything perfect, have low taxes, build lots of bus, rail and subway depots, build water treatments, but people will allways say that something (for example traffic) is bad. They are really rude :D. So to not get "sad" I turned it off :D.
      Anyway I am just going continue with playing SC2 WIN 95 version (with that great resolution) on a Mac using Win emulator :D. I am too lazy to find a link so find it yourself. "SIMCITY WIN 95 VERSION SPECIAL" or something like that. Its really worth it to play again :D.

    But in 2002 I rediscovered Simcity 2000 and its successors 3000 and 4. All SimCity games till 4 are splendid. This Soundblaster 16 music is nostalgic. ***** As I said a bit higher. I was always putting out fires by cutting a part of my city by water squares :D because in the most of cases I had not enough of firemen. Actually it blocks the fire well :D. And then you just keep hearing KABOOM and watching how half of your city is isolated and doomed in turtle speed.
      And how did you put them out ? :D Did you use same way like me ? :D

    It was this version of the game that was a major breakthrough in graphics, music & those wacky scenarios.The landscaping options were amazing for back then. Then came SC 3000 & REALLY great music & options. SC4 became an addiction for so many it's many amazing features & the plug-ins, cheats & everything else sent in by creative game fans. Many missed the scenarios. With Societies, most of us went, "Huh - what's this supposed to be?" The new game? Changes are needed or this will fail, too.

    The lights on the logo are actually an example of how the game engine does "animation". There's no actual _animation_ in the sense that any tile has separate "frames". Rather, part of the colour palette is sets of colours that cycle, and these can be seen by opening the tileset editor.
    So, for example, there is a set of four colours that cycle through dark red, dark red, red and yellow, each one offset by one. (Colour 1 is DR, DR, R, Y, colour 2 is DR, R, Y, DR, 3 is R, Y, DR, DR, and 4 is Y, DR, DR, R) By setting each light to be one of these colours, you get the illusion of animation. This set is also used for the runway edge lights and the traffic signals, among other things.
    There are several sets of blue shades which are used for water pipes and the blades on the wind turbines, and a set which is six grey pixels and two dark blue pixels, which is used to animate traffic on road tiles. It's quite a clever method.

      Scomos I dont get the last sentence. But yes. The gameplay is same... or better thanks to the resolution compatibility. You can make the windows as big as you want. It supports my 1280x800 monitor fullscreen unlike the DOS version. That Dos version is only about 480x600 or 800x600. So its 4:3 and its less entertaining with black borders.

    I wonder how many people actually know what "reticulating splines" means, or that none of the SimCity games actually do it (apparently the developers call their terrain-gen method a "fractal", but I don't think it's a fractal in the mathematical sense).

    I got into the SimCity games thanks to a Mac version of 2000 in my school's computer class (It was just one Mac, everything else was Windows XP SP3 at the time) and I wound up playing 3000: Unlimited, 4: Deluxe and now I'm binge playing the hell out of Cities: Skylines. I just *can't* help but play these soundtracks while playing that game and they've become ingrained in my head.

One random night in 2000 (appropriately enough), right after finishing eighth grade, I found a copy of 2000 at Walmart and my 'rents bought it for me. Good find considering 3000 had already been released by then; picked that one up probably the next year, and got 4 not long after it was released. Still love these games.

    I love SimCity 2000 - I'd build cities that took up every single tile on the map. My biggest disappointments where that it only supports like 500 special buildings, then they don't count as special anymore, and also when I tried to create a pure subway city, the citizens demand road and rail. They just won't tolerate subway-only. Damn annoying.

      I don't know if 4:45 occurs at any special triggers in the game but I always connect it to doing well. 06:53 is the opposite. I don't believe it has to do with my subjective perception in regards to the key. Or maybe it's that simple? Would love if someone could confirm this!

    • @armystuntman8601
      @armystuntman8601 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a vague memory of songs like Traffic Trouble at 06:58 playing the moment I got a popup about a city problem, so I think it was at least a little dynamic.
      Though I just realized that the windows version of the game actually has super-short versions of some longer tracks, so maybe it's triggered to play that instead and goes back to the rest of the randomized soundtrack.
