Return To Monkey Island Review - The Final Verdict

  • Given how easy it was for Return to Monkey Island to go disastrously wrong, it would very honestly be tempting to call it nothing short of a miracle that it is as amazing as it is- but honestly, that would be doing a disservice to Ron Gilbert and the team he's assembled, and the incredible work and passion they've put on display here.
They have all come together to deliver what mostly felt truly impossible at this point in time: a true, new, modern Monkey Island game, one that is so convincing at recreating the heights of the series' heyday, it feels like that heyday never ended.

Monkey island is by far the most original and fun game series ever but
It's so upsetting how hollow this one feels. In curse for instance you had plunder island which was green, lively, upbeat and overall the ambience made you so happy. Then in contrast you get to blood island and everything is dark and mysterious. You are wrapped up in this eerie island and the spooky ambience adds a whole different element to the puzzles there. These environments together draws you in to give you a tangible, immersive and captivating experience and makes you feel more connected with guybrush and his adventure.
The islands in RTMI unfortunately were forgettable and empty. Terror island felt like you were walking through a bunch of props
In the first 3 Le chuck feels way more daunting and meeting elaine after solving puzzles genuinely made you so happy.
The ending left me feeling stranded and empty

They sought to recreate what we felt when we first finished monkey island 2. Is a feeling. The secret of monkey island is to go through story. A story that has been told many times. And the proof that there are no more surprises because we are adults. oh .and opened the envelope that is inside the unlocked things.

It was good. 2ez though (nothing as hard as figuring out you had to chop down the rubber tree, or putting a prosthetic stomache over a manhole and using it as a trampoline..) and the sword fighting was a tease.
Decent game though and much better than the telltale saga

It's flat, too easy and the characters are just not the same as they were. Elaine is like she is brainwashed. Sure, you get used to the new style and yes, there are some nostalgic moments but still. The world is not as big and detailed let alone the puzzles. Most of the time you don't have to even think about what could help. It's pushed in your face. It's good for kids getting to know the world but for a long term fan probably devastating. But to each their own

The original game was made great by a collaborative effort with over a dozen contributors. The yt channel onaretrotip has a great video highlighting this in "MARK FERRARI interview (The Making of Monkey Island - Behind The Scenes)" There are other great videos about this on that channel. The short version is the original was made with team work and serendipity, kind of by accident. It was influenced by works like 'On Stranger Tides' and other books.
This latest is just a sorry entry in the parade of flavorless, nostalgia bait centered around a weak narrative by a cynical creator who recruited one other member of the original team. There is no love, heart, kindness or joy in this work. Its just a cynical rant in the form of an awful cash grab. Too bad.

“We’re not where the 1990s was in society and culture, so things have changed in the world, and in how we make games,” says LucasFilm Games’ brand art director Hez Chorba. “With this game I can tell you how seriously DE&I [diversity, equality, and inclusion] principles were taken into consideration. We’re making sure we’re inviting everyone into this storyline. Not that the originals didn’t. But now we’re just making sure to try and see it through everyone’s eyes, and understanding everyone’s different perspectives. I can’t tell you how seriously people on the team took it, because this is a Monkey Island for 2022.”
And just like that, another classic gaming legend had to be butchered by "Progressives".
Even an escapist fantasy adventure computer game about Pirates has to be politically correct.
Sadly, I will have to give this a miss.
I wouldn't want to contribute in any way to Hez Chorba's pay packet.
I will stick with the Special Edition versions of the first two classics.

The Monkey Island series takes place in The Caribbean so for the most part I think that each entry handled "diversity" in a pretty organic fashion (and mind you this was the 90s and early 2000s when they weren't simply ticking some corporate boxes) . I mean it was racially and culturally diverse, gender diverse and characters felt organic and justified. Now with this new entry it really felt more like they were trying to get some sort of delicate, ideal corporate ratio going, so it feels..well..artificial. Calling someone racist because they don't buy into forced diversity and representation based on corporate quotas is a bit shortsighted and only furthers the existence of a hypocritical world in which studios / companies / corporations feign an interest in cultural, racial, gender, sexual diversity just because they planted some generic, cutout characters that meet that criteria on a surface level and serve no other purpose than faking said diversity. I'm a white male and would love nothing more than to see genuine, compelling, diverse characters in media, but at the level creative studios treat this issue now it feels artificial and frankly disrespectful to the vibrant and interesting representation different groups deserve and undoubtedly posess on a social and cultural level. Let's stray from this modern norm of "if you're against a certain corporate practice that pretends to care about a social group then it means you're against that social group" because it's divisive and everyone just comes out estranged and miserable out of the whole affair.
