Thanks. I have an old Ridgid 12v drill that I havent used for years because the batteries were dead and could not be recharged. I got the Harbor Freight 18v battery and used 10 of the 15 1.2v 1500mAh NiCd cells in the pack. It was an easy fix and works perfectly. $16.

Unfortunately, my luck wasn't good. Thankfully, I thought to check the drill before fooling with the battery pack (drill was a freebie) and found the drill itself was bad. At least I hadn't spent any money on it.

I've been doing this for years. Here's a tip to help with soldering... tin the battery terminal with a dab of solder and punch a hole in the tab. Place the tab on the the terminal and apply heat to top of tab. The solder flow up through the hole. Knowledge learned from building battery packs for RC cars.

here's several things for getting a good result
do not attempt to do this unless you are sure what you are doing - the acid can burn your skin
check the voltage first - there may be a dead cell which would waste your time.
      Check the battery fluid.
Try to fully charge the battery.
(I discovered about these and more on Jons Mender Guide website )

Great, that are very creative fixes !
    Some thoughts :
    - when you're in a pickle, it's good to know that the tiny pins in safety torx screws are quite easily broken off with a small screwdriver, but it will void any warranties ...
    - the soldering is much easier and cleaner when you apply a tiny amount of solder on both surfaces separately before joining them. First do all the cell surfaces, then do all the metal strips. It's good practice to let both cool down before doing the final soldering, as to avoid putting to much heat in the cell. You will find this method gives super stong joints, the kind you want in a power tool.

Good idea and that is definitely cheaper than buying replacements from manufacturers. A tip: don't toss those old battery cells in the trash as they can short out and cause a fire. Collect them and recycle them properly as a number of electronics stores will take them back. Any rechargeable battery can be recycled ni-cad, ni-mh, l-ion etc.

I bought sub-c NiCad replacement cells on eBay and rebuilt my Porter Cable 19.2 volt batteries. It takes a little time, but the old power tools work as good as new now. The Porter Cable batteries are flat, without the one cell sticking up. Those are easier to rebuild IMO. I rebuilt some DeWalt 18v batteries at work. They have the one cell on top, and took more time and effort to rebuild. The tool manufacturers want stupid money for OEM batteries. BTW, Batteries Plus accepted the old NiCad cells for recycling for free. They charge to recycle the Lithium Ion cells. Nothing better than "Fixin' ya tools"!

You can take a fuse out of a junk battery and place it into your original battery. I have done this dozens of times and they work fine. I believe the one that goes down in front up against the right hand battery is called a thermistor. Not sure what you call the little one that goes in between the cells is called but you can get a bunch of not working batteries on eBay for a few dollars with those things in them.

I appreciate the video and might actually try rebuilding one battery. using your method.. I am also wondering if anyone makes an adapter for the 18v harbor freight nicad to fit to the 19.2 craftsman battery and slide it into the tool... In sure have enough 19.2 volt cases with dead batteries in them and thought about trying to come up with something like that although the tool would possibly run at 1.2 volts less. so I dont know if that would work out too well

@@jster1963 yes the adapters that I have seen can run it dewalt tools on Hercules batteries.. but it would probably take a Hercules to dewalt adapter and then a dewalt to craftsman adapter so thats 2 adapters... so today I bought 3 pack of dewalt batteries and got a 50 buck discount for applying for a credit card at home depot....so I don't have to do anything too complex or radical to keep my craftsman 5 piece tool set that used to run on nicad... now it should run on the dewalt 20v lithium batteries...

This is fucking genius! I bought a dewalt cordless drill with 4 batteries 2 that work great but 2 that won't take a charge. I also got a Makita cordless circular saw, with 3 batteries. Again 2 that work and one that won't. A porta cable cordless drill with 2 non working batteries. I bought a single lot of tools off of Craigslist for 100 bucks and i know it seems like i got ripped off but i got a soldering iron, a old #4 Stanley plane, the Makita circular saw with charger and 3 batteries, a corded Makita hammer drill, the porta cable cordless drill with the case a charger and 2 batteries, the dewalt cordless drill charger and 4 batteries, 4 older pipe wrenches, 2 estwig hammers, a cheap socket set, a cheap chisel set brand new still in the box, a cheap sliding compound miter saw with 3 brand new blades and about 4 craftsmen tool bags filed with newer screw drivers drill bits and other assorted tools. Hopefully I can get the broken batteries working again or find some dip shit tweaker selling the correct working batteries for real cheap. Either way i might try my hand at fixing the non working ones. Thanks for posting this i was almost thinking of getting rid of the non working batteries and cutting my losses but there's a harbor freight a few blocks away so in a couple of weeks i might start working on mine. Anyways, I let it sit for 4 or 5 years inside my place without being used & it is perfectly fine, I used it the other day & it worked fine! From what I remember, I have heard that you never want to store lithium-ion batteries with a full charge, run them for a second or 30 & wear the battery down just a bit to 90 something percent & they last much longer!!!!!!!!!NEVER STORE FULLY CHARGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RATHER THAN PULLING THE TABS OFF the donor battery cells, cut em in half, and solder to that (you can fold them over themselves so that they don't touch other cells). It's no good to heat the battery cells, particularly Li-ion. On that note, if you solder to one, make your iron real hot and go in and out quick, letting it cool down between attempts. That way the heat is only superficial.

WY more than that jezter1963. You have get the cells, then buy a Li ion charger, then you have to get a BMS circuit board. You can't use the pack with protection

I realize that HF prices are hard to beat but decent NiCds are available up to 2200 mah. The original batteries in my Porter Cable were 2000mah. If I am going to go to the trouble of rebuilding the pack, why would I do it with significantly lower capacity cells?. I also wonder about rhe quality of HF batteries. Personally, I like Tenergy 2200mah NiCds, available with or without tabs

I hope that was not acid paste you were using. Resin flux is the only thing you should use on electrical connections. Resin flux only works at the high heat of soldering, acid flux continues to work at room temperature eventually corroding the metals.

Just a tip here from experience. Do NOT get lead free solder, the stuff is pure crap. I like Alpha Fry/ Alpha Metals 63/37 rosin core solder. I also use Alpha Metals rosin flux paste. Pretend both sides of the connection. BTW, use .031" or 8mm solder. Go heavy on the flux. If the battery is new, I'll scuff off to help adhesion. Practice, practice, and more. When I lay down the strip I'm on and off the connection in 1 1/2 , 2 seconds max. My iron never touches the battery, it's layer on the strip. You feel the strip sink under iron when the tinned solder melts and get off of it. Don't have to use pick or screwdrive to hold tab down, the iron does. People don't know some solder mixes don't melt till 695*F....the 63/37 melts at 357*....
