If it is a bathroom sink [a really common place for this issue) go under the sink and undo the p-trap (alot of times you won't need any tools) and clear out the lines then reinstall the same as you removed this will also remove the clog (usually hair) and not push it further down the pipe 😉

      It really depends.
I regret deciding “oh I’ll fix that slow draining sink.” when I was visiting relatives. Took the P trap apart permanently.
It was not leaking, but the chrome plating was all that was holding it together. So I had to buy the p trap kit, some gaskets, and the tools to put it all back together.

Using a base and a acid is counter intuitive as they dilute each other and make a salt. Baking soda by itself is better as bases tend to break up stuff that gets caught in drains better which is why drain cleaners are basic. Also the best method to clean them is to always just clean the peatrap by removing it

My little brother stuffed a flour and water mix in there and that makes a doughy consistency and clogged it. This worked perfectly and the drain has been fine ever since

Mixing those two cancel each other out and the bubbles are just Co2. It’s not cleaning anything, if your drain is slow, 9/10 times it’s because of hair.
Use a plastic snake with those sharp teeth to get into the pipe, twist it around, pull it out, clean it off, repeat until it isn’t picking anything out of the drain anymore.
Had my bf do this to our drain because he has long hair. Our sink actually drains fast now

  • @TheSlimCognito

I give an A for effort but that won't get rid of the problem. The issue with bathroom drains is the combination of hairs, soaps and oils from The body. That mixture won't get rid of all of them. Just the oils and some soap. Best to remove the pop-up from both drains. Look up how to install or remove a pop-up assembly and you'll know how simple it is. Tub drains are a little harder to clear out but can be done with your hands. A zip it is a great tool for people at home if you don't want to take anything apart. Although the tub drain you will have to take the pop up off which usually just unscrews or pops out. This method shown though is a good way to get rid of smells from you drains as well as your washer machine.

The cap on your sink drain plug unscrews. This will give you better access to pour your volcano done the drain.
Also, try using a plunger. They sell little ones for sinks, but you can use the regular toilet ones on your sinks too, works beautifully.

Licensed master plumber here. If your bathroom sink backs up almost immediately when running water then 9/10 times it's because of build up on the pop-up drain. Quickest way to resolve this is to remove the pop-up and wipe clean, shine a flashlight down into the drain, you may have more debris in there. Since pop-up drain styles vary, look up how to remove your specific one on TH-cam. You'll be surprised and disgusted with how much gunk and hair gets caught by the pop-up.

Air hose for a fish tank connected to a can of duster works great. Get that hose as far as it'll go down, fill the sink with water, give the can a few toots and the clog blows away.

usually this happens to sinks with a stopper that is lever operated (a stick in the back of the faucet) because it requires cross bars under the stopper for it to sit on, and those crossbars are so good at collecting hair.
just go under the vanity, unclip the operating lever and unscrew the cap, take out the stopper and use a tweezer to take out the chunk of hair and put everything back together.

I have old drains and shedding hair and have used this technique for years. I also let mine sit for around 10 mins then pour a little more vinegar down and it fuzzes again. Wait another 10 and pour boiling water down slowly. Works every time 💯

A good thing to add is a plunger specifically for the shower and sink, the vinegar and baking soda is good but always helped by the jolt of air they give.

If you'll disconnect the drain plug under the sink, on this kind, and clean it as well you'll get even better results.

Vinegar is good. Never could get my glass stove top clean, always looked like it had a film, until vinegar 50/50 with water in a spray bottle. Now I use it on everything.
My neighbor installing a water heater wanted to re-use the brass fittings, new ones cost $90 bucks. I told him to soak them overnight in vinegar and then clean them up with a brush. He took it further and polished the non threaded surfaces with steel wool making look brand new.

Do not remove the drain plug when doing this! I learned it the hard way. If you do it’ll spill most under the sink

Drain cleaner uses a string base to cut through the clog. It has an exothermic reaction with water helping the cleaning.
Baking soda and water produce co2 and water, which want do anything to the clog.

I love vinegar for a lot of stuff including this, but the easier way, and it doesn’t really take a lot of know how would be to open your P-trap and look at your down pipe from the drain and also look into the drain going into the wall but majority times it’s in your downpipe from your drain, and also in the P-trap itself as far as a blockage goes

The whole point of this is to keep the drain covered and let the pressure build up so it can push whatever is in the way out.. since you didn't cover it fully it didn't create enough pressure..

Just something to add on. After letting it soak in, plug the drain and fill the sink all the way with hot water and soap. Then let it go and the extra pressure should help get the clog dislodged and the soap will get rid of any grease buildup. I’m a Red Seal plumber and have done this many times with great results.

To make it work extra well, take a large boiling pot of water and dump it down the drain after you've let the mixture sit in it
