the only gmod tutorial that isnt 9 years old lol. ive been making my first server and gotten pretty far for being a noob at it just wish i knew ppl who were more experienced with server making or play lots of gmod D: ive had it since 2010-11, played it real heavy in 2014-15 and then just recently got back into it and wanna make a server i just have no friends with same interest to learn DD:

the port forwarding did in fact give me major headaches. attempted for 5 hours to get it working. (of no fault of this video. amazing work) its working now and i figured out its because i misstyped the port number on the start.bat file

If there is maps in my collection can I skip the part at 6:33 ? Does the bsp file be included somewhere? Im trying to create a private TTT server and there is a lot of map in the collection. Would there be a faster way to do this instead of using gmad and extracting them one by one?
EDIT: Just tested and if you put map in your collection you dont need to use gmad, just put the map name in the start.bat and it should work. Also I higly recommand Workshop Download Script (on the workshop) It allow people to join the server without subscribing to your collection, so it wont mess with their addon for single player. Just add it in your collection for ur server and it will automatically work

Awesome tutorial. But you don't need the map file to be in the maps folder as a bsp. All you need to do is just have the collection with addon of the map and then point the start bat too that map.

There are props that I can walk through and not break when I connect to the server but can see. Do I need to install css content to the server or did I miss a folder when extracting using gmad.exe map is ttt_subway_b4
CSS mounting is usually for DarkRP, but if the map uses assets from other games, it might help to download the games and install them. Whatever gmad.exe gave you should be all the addon has to offer

im trying to get a map from the workshop and when i goto my workshop/4000 and open the correct folder id, there is no .gma file, only _legacy.bin files, ive tried this for 3 different maps
so i found it, actually in my common/garrysmod/garrysmod/addons folder

I've started up my server and have my addons downloaded but when I join it the addons aren't even usable but as models?

Today they changed my CG-NAT public IP to a fixed public IP without any CG-NAT and I don't know why I can't connect to my public IP. I don't know if it's because my IP is configured incorrectly or if I did something wrong.

Make sure the port is open. Go to portchecker.co and with the server running, check port 27015

Some addons maybe dont download properly for my friends, so they appear as errors or some things appear invisible, any fix or did i do something wrong?
Make sure your friends also subscribe to the same workshop collection you are hosting. Some addons also require some valve games to be owned and installed
man i did everything but on my folder i cant fins d steamapps
For some reason the app_update 4020 validate did not work for me it said "Error! App '4020' state is 0x202 after update job."
If I remember correctly that means not enough space on your drive
When I use Calix website and went under the portfowarding it tells me to put in a Lan Port and a Wan port and I put the TCP/UPD, but it tells me to put whatever into a LAN Port and WAN Port which needs 2 numbers in the 2 boxes below LAN and WAN, so I put 27015 for both boxes under LAN and WAN but it still didn't work and whenever I checked the "checking port" website and still said closed.

When I try to add maps from the Steam method and I go into the mod associated to the ID, the file is a [name]_legacy.bin file instead of .gma file. Any solutions? I've scoured a decent amount of forums to look for a solution but I haven't found anything.
You could try downloading gmad extractor and see if that works, there’s a few different kind of Garry’s Mod extractors out there

@@alexcordel I've solved the problem last night, forgot to follow up.
Instead of going to workshop\content\4000, I went through \steamapps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod\addons and just found the .gma files of all maps and addons there and dragged it onto the gmad.exe file as said in the video. Thank you

I can't figure out the portforwarding part at all. AT&T asks for three ports, start, end, and lan. What am I supposed to do?
Start and end can be the same thing (27015). LAN is your computers local IP

Make sure there isn’t a // before your username in the .txt file. If that doesn’t work, you could try using an addon like ULX

Hi, I did everything like you except port forwarding as it is just for dev purposes (localhost), but when i do connect ip:port the game instantly says "Bad SteamID" and returns me to main menu, some idead ?
Try using your local IP instead of the public IP to join (example, connect 192.168.1.55:27015)
Also, you should see the server in the LAN list as long as you are on the same network the server is running on

Port Forwarding doesn’t need to be done for LAN, so it’s gotta be something else, your start.bat file set up correctly?

According to google it should be admin and password all lowercase, so it may have been changed at one point for you. To change it back to default, you’d have to reset the router if there is no reset password option
something doesnt work for me, i type in the user and password for my ipv4 gateaway which is huawei but it doesnt work i even checked the back of my router
Hmm, it could be different. Never had a Huawei router. I’d google that router and port forwarding or maybe calling your ISP may help
I know im a bit late but i have a question, Everything in this video has worked out for me except the addons. I went through the proccess and installing all the mods and it went fine, but when i loaded into my server i only had the base addons from hl2 and none if my addons were added into the world
Hmm. Are the addons actually downloading? Does it show in the command prompt? The workshop collection you’re using, is it set to public?
@@alexcordel It says "Failed to get add-on info, Access denied (Item hidden/ Banned?)" and then it starts downloading all the addons as if i didnt just get that warning, and btw my collection is public and steam approved of my collection :/
Sorry i made a mistake that warning was from an addon in my collection that is no longer available not the whole collection. But its weird because i followed all your steps and the server works just fine and in the commander prompt it shows all the addons being downloaded but when i load in the world i have no addons
I’d check all the addons on your collection and make sure none have been removed or banned from the workshop. Also make sure your collection ID is entered correctly in the start.bat. You could also try to purge all addons and redownload them
If that’s the case I’d remove those addons from the collection that aren’t available anymore and maybe try making a new collection with all the same addons you want, just so the ID is different
Can I like still join the server without doing the port forwarding part?
Anyone on your network can join your server without port forwarding, it’ll just be a LAN server at that point
On localhost ttt server certain guns are errors. Reload animations are missing, some guns can shoot before the deploy delay should've finished. How would I go about fixing that and could it be automated with something like fastdl or whatever it's called.

Is there an error number or anything? Try running as admin also and make sure windows and steamcmd is updated
Thanks for your tutorial, but when I enter the "public IP":27015 in the console, I get an infinite loading and the console says "DEBUG: Clearing CSoundPatches after soundsound". I used port checker with the public IP and 27015, the site says the port is open. I even deactivated my firewall, but it doesn't work. I only can enter in the server with my computer's IP. Do you have an idea what could be the issue? Thanks!
Doesn’t sound like a port issue, sounds more like a map or addon issue. Try a different map and see if you can get in

It could be an issue with an addon then, try removing all addons and see if the problem goes away

You could sign up for a server hosting company, Atomic Networks has free development servers, that way you don’t need steam for creating a server

Make sure you’re typing in your correct IP, not everyone’s is the same, also don’t put “.com” or “.www”
How do i change the gamemode of the server? I want to play hide and seek with my friends, but i dont know how to do it.
You’ll probably have to download the actual gamemode, but you can change the gamemode in the start.bat file

That usually means your friend is using a non legit version of Garry’s Mod. If that’s the case, I’m of no help
anyone know how to port forward on starlink?
After some research it appears you can’t port forward on starlink as they use CGNAT, there may be a work around, but none that I know of

Xfinity is just my internet provider, I’m sure most if not all other internet providers can port forward tho. However, you’ll have to get into your router settings to port forward, if you can’t do that, the only way to make it public is to host your server through a web hosting site, I’m currently testing out billing.atomicnetworks.co/aff.php?aff=19 but they seem to be pretty good so far

Hmm. Could be unstable network? Could also be that you’re downloading it within too many folders. Try “force_install_dir C:\SteamCMD\Server” (change directory to where you’d like) before doing the app_update 4020 validate command

Make sure you’re using the correct ID and the ID you use to login. Also get rid of the // before your name in the text file

I got all the way to the last step, I used a different port then the default one you gave but it's coming up as "open". I'm just not seeing the server in GMOD itself under the Local Network tab, and when I connect manually it times out.
slight update, I am able to connect to it manually in the dev console, but when my friend tries to join the same way, it times them out.
That is strange if the port shows as open. When your friend tries to join in the dev console, do they put “connect x.x.x.x:PORT” ?
@@alexcordel yup I gave them exactly what I used to join "connect x.x.x.x:PORT;password 'password'" I just set the password was the only difference between me and the video
Try removing the password and see if they can connect
@@alexcordel I got it working, turns out it was a problem with my port forwarding, I needed to change the protocol to TCP/UDP, I just had it at TCP only before.

on the bat text file it says that windows cannot find srcds.exe and doesnt start
The bat file has to be in the same location as srcds.exe

Did you make sure you used your steam login ID and not your display name? Also make sure your profile is set to Public. And make sure to remove the // from before your username

How can I play Half life 2 Maps ? I want to play the Half life 2 Campain Mod with a friend and the server says "map load failed: d1_trainstation_01 not found or invalid" how do I fix that ?
You need to find the map files. They should be .bsp files

the garrysmods website now takes me to the steam workshop and the map files from there are in a format the server doesnt want, how do I get the bsp map files?

@@alexcordel hi, thanks it worked, however when the client doesnt have the map installed when joining, it downloads it while connecting but still fails at loading it, stating an invalid hash (host error). How can I make the client download it correctly, or is that error just because i run gmod on my host machine

Usually the client will have to install the map themselves also and put into map folder unless you use fastdl (I have a video on that also)

As long as all maps are in the fastdl, they should download for everyone that joins. As for the hosting, I’ve used it and works fine. It’s “free” only up to a certain point. It’s not unlimited data, for that you’d have to pay. Another web hosting I like is InfinityFree

Hmm, only IPv6? Everyone should have an IPv4. Open Windows CMD and type in: ipconfig /all
See if that brings up an IPv4 (assuming you need a local ip)
If you need a public IP, just google, “what’s my IP?” And it should bring up your public IPs
Hi when I opened start.bat it says windows cannot find ‘scrds’exe’.
Make sure the start.bat is in the same location as scrds.exe

Did you make sure that the collection is set to public?

Yeah it some how needs to be public. Maybe a setting with your actual stream profile?
@@alexcordel I figured it out. I had steam guard off (for destiny item manager) which makes it so you can't set collections to public
My port (I used 27015 like you did in your video) is still coming up as closed even with the server running. I have Xfinity and followed the steps to port forward and am wondering what could have gone wrong. I can run the server just fine and it plays just fine, but it will not open to multiplayer. I had the same problem with the previous default Gmod port
Make sure windows defender isn’t blocking anything (the port and scrds), try setting your PC to a static IP, try port forwarding a range of 27000-27025 UDP/TCP. Enable UPnP if not already. You could also try changing the port by adding the line “-Port XXXXX” to the start.bat. Port forwarding sometimes is just weird
I followed all instructions besides making a static IP, and all I managed to do was make it unable to show up on my local network until I changed the port back to the default in the start.bat file. Everything should be port forwarded, and the server still runs and shows up on my local network, however it is still not visible to friends for them to join. Do you think making my pc have a static IP would fix this? I’m not as tech savvy as I’d like to be, and I don’t want to do something to jeopardize my pc

A static IP may fix it, but with xfinity and choosing the device in the drop down menu, I don’t think that’s the issue, it’s most definitely a port forwarding issue though if you can join the server and friends cannot. You could try changing the port it uses, or you can contact xfinity to have them open the port, I’ve heard of people doing that to fix the issue. Maybe try restarting the router as well
@@alexcordel so it looks like as soon as I change the port in the start.bat, the server stops showing up for me on my local network, so I may be stuck with the default port because I’m not sure what would be causing this. The default port should be open for both tcp and udp already, so I was thinking it was a windows firewall issue, but I checked and it’s not blocking either srcds or Garry’s Mod. Do you think contacting Xfinity and having them open the port on their end would fix it? I really dislike how they moved everything over to the app, seems like they made things more complicated by simplifying them lmao. Also, do you think port forwarding it in the app is failing somehow?

Yeah you can play by yourself or with anyone on the same internet as you, without port forwarding

Hey I have a problem where people can't join my server it just says to them, can't join server after 6 retries, I even port forwarded with the right port number and the code is correct so how do I fix this?
Did you check your port to see if it’s open or closed? Portchecker.co make sure to check while the server is running

@@Bad_Laggy What router do you have? Maybe I can find a port forwarding guide online for that router. Confused on public ip and actual ip though, it should be the port that is open or closed (27015) not an IP
to add models and weps, my friends see errors as i only added them to my collection, i see them fine in my server but my friends see it as an error. maps work smoothly
i added the collection id in my start.bat file, and its public
Make sure your friends also subscribe to the collection
@@alexcordel ik there was a way to force someone to install without subscribing to the collection, where u would create a workshop.lua and adding. resource.AddWorkshop(“ID”)

Are you trying to make it a chromium branch server? Or are you trying to set GMod back to normal and play on the server?
You may need to reinstall GMod if setting it back to normal from Chromium doesn't fix it.
Also, make sure the server is up to date, in steamcmd "login anonymous" and type "app_update 4020 validate" and it will update any outdated files

You’ll have to google what router you have and “how to port forward” and they usually show how. Every router is a little different, but for the most part, my how to port forward video should give you a good idea of how to do it

Port Forwarding won’t mess anything up for anyone else, but if you don’t want to mess with the router and still want to have your server online, you can try having a company host your server, I currently like Atomic Hosting - billing.atomicnetworks.co/alexcordel

You can play Peer-to-Peer or have a company host your server, other than that, your IP will be shown
some maps are legacy.bin files, so is there a way I can fix that?

The only way I found was to host your server through a company instead of your own PC, but that costs money, currently I am testing out Atomic Networks (billing.atomicnetworks.co/aff.php?aff=19)

Thank you! Quickest work around is to have your friends download the map and put it in their map folder for Garry’s mod
@@alexcordel and sorry for still bothering you but when i tried to go into my workshop files through the steam's files , I couldn't find any .gma files but i find .bin
There sometimes two different workshop folders. One in the actual steam folder and one in the Garry’s mod folder, look in both spots
