Exquisitely shot movie. So many scenes are breath taking, however the scene looking down on cardinals with their umbrellas in the rain is just beautiful (look out for one character of note, which just completes the scene!)
I've seen it twice now and it's superb. The scene you mention, with the umbrellas is extraordinary, but it was only on the second viewing that I noticed that right near the beginning (as the cardinals are arriving), there's a companion sequence of a much smaller group of cardinals walking through the rain with black umbrellas, as opposed to the white ones later, reflecting the smoke used to signify how a vote has gone.
Watched it twice. Better and even more nuanced the second time. Also instead of watching on large TV watched on my MacBook so I could see details that were 100% missed watching on the telly. Excellent on every level. Every part was acted perfectly. Loved hearing Latin and Italian and Spanish along with English. Huge thumbs up.
"They're not politicians, they're cardinals." Oh, yes, they are, Mr. Fiennes. They are definitely politicians. Anyone who operates and thrives within a large organization, whether it's the Catholic church or a corporation or whatever, is a politician.
During the first scenes it became clear that Ralph Fiennes was going to nail this. The setting seemed like one big theater performance in several ways. Stanley Tucci's character saying "Your firm hand has its admirers" felt to me like he was breaking the fourth wall. Amazing scene. The message about the dangers of certainty and balance being key was outstanding. I watched it twice the same night. Loved it.
Wowwwwww WHAT AN AMAZING MOVIE- SO BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN AND PORTRAYED. Ralph you never stop amazing me!!! I wish people were so not invested in watching a movie because popular culture makes you cool if you do rather than the content of the movie. This movie is sooo raw, so real, and strangely makes you feel content. Bravo!!!
I watched this film yesterday. The story did not capture me quite as much as I had hoped, but it is certainly beautifully shot, scored, written, and performed. Ralph Fiennes gives an exceptional performance in the lead role - surely one of his best. Rossellini doesn't get a lot of screen time, but when she shows up, she's riveting. All the supporting roles are well cast and brilliantly performed. But do not expect many theological musings from this film. It really does feel like a political thriller in fancy dress.
Watched the * Conclave* two days ago. It amazed me for the trilling atmosphere that is mounting every moment. I find the silences and the music perfect to show how all those people are waiting and plotting to be elected. All the actors have been perfect in their role and at last this movie is showing how human we are with all our bad and good things.
And embracing ALL God’s children no matter how they are made. Why can’t we work together as a society to make sure everyone is comfortable with who they are, inside and out. Isn’t that the “Christian” way?
2. To be clear as a follow-up to my earlier comments, the implied attack on the Holy Eucharist is a de facto denial of the real presence in the consecrated bread and wine. In effect, a much more sophisticated and more beautifully acted re-run of the Paris Olympics Opening ceremony last supper bachanalia.
Great film but the music was overwhelming and distracting for me. Even for close-ups where the tension could be seen all over the faces of the actors -we were already on the edge of our seats because of the intrigue. Sometimes less music is more inviting for the viewer. Otherwise we cannot lose ourselves in the film as much. I had the same issue with Berger's previous film, All Quiet on the Western Front. Its music was loud and omnipresent.

I loved the movie so much. Especially the visuals. Two things I didn't like though - a Pole has to be an alcoholic, hasn't he? and the final plot twist felt cheap controversy mixed with lecturing the audience - it left some bitter after taste after 95% of such an amazing movie.
When did the internet collectively decide Stanley Tucci is the arbiter of Italian food? INSUFFERABLE. People have cooking for centuries and this whole "Italian Food is ultimate" has been wrung out for eons..,peddling his pans and trashing craft services is silly snobbery.
yes, they are politicians, but they are NOT MERELY POLITICIANS. one wonders whether the people involved in the making of this film have any profound and intimate knowledge of what Catholicism is all about.
@@arickett68 Fiennes, not Fuentes. just because one is brought up a Catholic does not mean though that your understanding of it is profound and intimate... many Catholics do possess that "Catholic imagination" and "Catholic sensibility", particularly the artists among them. but conclaves are not just political events; they are something more...
Very good interview👍 fabulous movie!! IMO about human fragility and imperfection! Isabella you don’t need to keep reminding anyone yr mom was Ingrid Bergman.
BEING A CARDINAL IS A POLITICAL OFFICE SINCE THEY ARE NOT ANOINTED WITH THE HOLY OIL, SO MUCH THAT A LONG AGO SOME WERE EVEN MARRIED PRECISELY BECAUSE IT WAS A POLITICAL OFFICE, WE MUST NOT FORGET EVEN TODAY THE TEMPORAL POWER OF THE POPES, IN THE HAND OF THE CARDINALS
The lovefest for this movie is WAY over the top. It's a movie you'll watch once, then never again. There's never any urgency and it's far from dramatic or clever as made out. It's a paint by numbers story with a silly, 'Crying Game' ending designed to shock... But falls flat. Wow, it's a hermaphrodite... how contraversial and topical 😴💤

I love that Isabella mentioned her mum 😊
I did not know Bergman was her Mom!

It's a cinema release. How have you seen it on TV or computer
@@simplyfrancoisit’s streaming on Peacock
It's been available to stream since 13th December.
Its rubbish. Waaaay overrated. Nothing clever about it.
I've now seen it twice at the cinema - superb piece of work.
Three outstanding actors in this film, makes this a ‘must see’, for me.
Oscar worthy!!!❤
Everyone who had a speaking role to perform was outstanding. Definitely more than the 3 or 4 leads.
Great film. I have already seen it twice and will see it again. Loved all the performances, including Diehz ("the Cardinal of Kabul") and the turtle.
Now you should watch Hail Caesar! No spoilers....
@@AngryFknDog so you haven't seen it, I take it. Are you always this rude?
The turtle was lovely.
A wonderful movie. Well directed, acting superb, scenery spectacular. The best movie I’ve ever watched.

Read the book!
Oh . This film is really good and the actors are fantastic.❤
I cannot express how much I am looking forward to see this cast in this movie 🍿🍿🍿
I've seen it 3 times. Loved it, of course!
Best adapted screenplay
Isabella's mother, Ingrid Bergman was also played a role of nun in The Bells of St Marys.

I read the book, and as all Harris' novels, it was wonderfully written. I look forward to seeing the movie. What a cast!
Jini his mother would be amazed

I agree, but it doesn’t feel like that. Not in the USA, anyway.😢
Not the point here. We all understand what’s going on here and how it has no relation to real Christianity. Grow up.
Doubts are beautiful ❤️
This looks amazing

Ralph Fiennes …wow! Oscars for him and Berger !!
Great and Beautiful ❤❤ actors 👑
Isabella will be nominated for an Academy Award...trust me!
Why? She's lucky to be in it for five minutes.
The Pharisees wrote this. They produced it.
Isabella! ❤
I don't know why, but I wanna cry seeing stanley tucci getting old like I thought devils wears prada was not that long ago 😭

Most Bishop's, Cardinal's and Pope's are just ambitious Priest's. The really good ones are those who don't want the promotion and forced to take it.
An overload of aberrant apostrophes. Do they not teach basic grammar in schools nowadays?
Tucci is still yummy 😍
yes, they are politicians, but they are NOT MERELY POLITICIANS. one wonders whether the people involved in the making of this film have any profound and intimate knowledge of what Catholicism is all about.
