In this HO Scale New Haven Model Railroad Tour, we visit John Grosner's HO Scale New Haven Railroad / Derby Junction Layout. Construction started in 2000 and was finished in 2009. The benchwork is open grid measuring 16 x 20. The track is hand-laid Code 70 and the hidden track is Code 83. The layout features 5 major areas to include realistic switching, prototypical structures, scenes and much more. The level of detail on this layout is simply incredible. Having operated on the layout personally on numerous occasions, I can say that this layout is very realistic in looks and in operations. Enjoy the video!
Outstanding. It’s nice to see so many oddly configured structures…they look so “right” for New England, where everything was built to fit the geography. There’s many impressive examples of detail that make scenes believable, too: the randomly leaning pole line along the right of way, the sway-backed wooden truss rod boxcar, the mechanical interlocking hardware and my favorite, the silt in the river having been stirred up by the shovel. You did a nice job panning slowly and dwelling on detail; many model railroad videos don’t. The in-and-out of the autofocus was a minor nuisance and the music wouldn’t have been my first choice but overall, very well done.
Nice work! I grew up in Stratford, Connecticut, about two towns south of Derby. Many, many years ago my great uncle was a conductor on the New Haven Railroad. As a young teenager we would ride the New Haven into Grand Central Station. I remember the passenger trains being pulled by GG-1 electric locomotives.
As someone who actually lives in Shelton, this is absolutely amazing. Unfortunately Canal Street looks nothing like this nowadays, but this is an amazing representation of how it used to look

Great video of an unbelievably detailed layout! I too live nearby and occasionally drive through Derby. I believe the first photo you showed was Bridge Street. The Derby Feed building brought back old memories too. At one time I bought all my lawn care products there. The model is remarkably accurate. Please do a part 2 on this one! Great job.
Absolutely fantastic layout! Attention to detail alone is outstanding but the representation of the Derby area is spot on. Used to live there for a number of years and this layout perfectly captures the essence of it. Great work!

Amazing!!! Great layout and tour. I grew up in White Hills Shelton during 80’-90’s and lived downtown on canal street during the early 00”s. This layout is so AMAZING!!!!
Beautiful video of an amazing layout - thanks Ron and John! And did I hear not one but two sound cars in the double-headed freight train? SUPER effective flange squeal and wheel knock - and through my ear buds I actually got a Doppler effect - sounded like I was standing trackside as it went by. Very cool!
A really beautiful layout and superb trackwork. Really liked the auto/pedestrian bridge with the delicate railings above the working crossing gate area.
