I couldn't for the life of me figure out what I was doing wrong with this, but the video cleared it up in the first few seconds, turns out you must open GIMP. Thanks so much.

*Exactly!* Every GIMP tutorial video I've seen so far on this channel starts with that ridiculous statement.

you should edit this. take out the obvious parts: that this is for gimp, that i need to start gimp, how to open an image, and take out the part about zooming, and then make one for actually using the 'erase tool' with transparency. maybe change the title on this one as it isnt about erasing, its about selecting and deleting.

    Perfect, thanks!
I used to do it in Photoshop by selecting the area and just hitting Delete on it (if there was the only one layer in the image) but I didn't know how in Gimp.

I had a WTF moment in GIMP. I would make a selection and clear it but it would always clear to white. I almost deleted the program as I thought this was the dumbest thing. Then I tried to search for a solution and I guess it's a work around as there is no real delete in GIMP, it just converts it to a color that then becomes a matte for transparency. Next on my list is getting the layers to snap to boundaries, guides, midpoints, etc. like in photoshop. Can't tell me simple features like this don't exist. Gimp has been around forever.

  • @Amonimus

Funny story, but even this doesn't work, instead of erasing it turns selection to half-transparent and I dunno why.

If you want to add a white background, add a layer to the image, set its "Fill with:" attribute to "White", move the new layer below the other one, right-click on the top layer and click "Merge Down". Lastly, click "File" > "Export As", and save it in the format you want. (Remember, when you load a file in GIMP, it's in the GIMP format. That's why it has to be exported and not just saved.) Hope this helped.

That can be removed, but it's a tedious process that requires zooming in as much as possible and using the Fuzzy Select tool on small regions, adjusting its threshold as needed. And you _definitely_ don't want to lose your changes as you progress. So, *be sure* to save them often.
