    For a wack job. You put together a pretty good video buddy!! lol.. Really like how you displayed the gps screen on screen. I was waiting for you to post this video thinking I might give it a try. But since you said it only works on Android. I guess I'm out of luck. As you know I have MotionX GPS. It pretty much has all the same features as you showed except Backcountry looks a little easier to navigate the menus. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Looks like you put some time in it. Great Job!!

      You're right Frankie, I did indeed put some time into this video, but that's not what took me so long to get it posted. We got a 2 day storm here and I was shoveling and blowing snow for 3 days this week. We got approx 20" of snow in 2 days, which represents 90% of all the snow we hot this winter. I am now in excellent physical condition! Lol
      With all the money u spend on toys, I can't believe you won't spend $50 on a used android phone so you can have the most awesome GPS unit out there - lol.
      Thanx for the comments & for watchin and quit standing Zepp up. He takes it out on me - lol

      I know what you mean about snow. I just got back from NJ and they got hit with a Nor'easter storm while I was there. Never seen so much snow come down so fast. Maybe that's what we need over here so we can get in good shape like you. lol.. Ya Zepp is going through major coffee withdrawal while I've been away. So now that I'm back, Zepp will be over to consume that $50 I made last week. Android phone is gonna have to wait a little longer. We just have leave a trail of popcorn to navigate for now. Hehehehe

      Hey Butch! Ya, lol, I filmed this the day before the 3-day blizzard started. If I threw up some footage of my backyard as it is now, all the southerners would be shocked at the difference in the amount of snow! I'm not sure I'll do one on the communicators. I did purchase this app for my Gamin 650. It was more money because I use the Garmin as opposed to my iPhone but it works perfectly and with two AA batteries I am good for at least a couple of days. Sure beats being lost in the bush thats for sure. Very handy to be able to share files via email as well.

      @@quaddingsous , Troopers are very good vehicles. There were good things about all of the versions, but my favorite ones are the "gen 1" models (1984-1991). Mine is a 1989 4 door with the 2.6l inline 4 cylinder and 5 speed manual trans. It's a good, solid vehicle. Mine came with most of the options that I'd want, including air conditioning (I live in Arizona). The one option I would have liked, that it didn't have, is the posi in the rear. I had a locker installed in the rear diff, so now it's pretty close to perfect, for my use. It's a great daily driver and a great off-road exploring vehicle. It's well built and tough as nails.

      @@quaddingsous , actually I've got a Polaris Ranger, also. The Ranger is my hard-core off-roader and it's hard to beat for real gnarly trails. But, of course, no heater or a/c and I can't drive it at 55 mph on the freeway to get to the area I want to explore. It's excellent for what I use it for but, so is the Trooper. Slightly different uses, but I like both of them. I can be on a road trip, in the Trooper, and if I see something interesting in the distance, I can pull off the blacktop and head up the trail to investigate.

    Great tutorial Q!!! So glad I found this.
    Costco has the Samsung Tab A 8”’tablet on sale now for $99USD now, so I’m really tempted. One question for you...when you first showed the map and we saw all the many trails, are those premarked trails that come with the map or are those trail recordings that you’ve actually done? In other words will it show you a trail that you’ve never ridden on? Thanks again.

    • @quaddingsous
      @quaddingsous  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All the blue lines were our tracks of trails we have ridden. Some are shown as trails on the map and others don't show up. We don't have an organized ATV trail system here in Saskatchewan, but we have a ton of trails; many of which are not on any map.
      Thanx Steve!

    Very informative bud, was always wondering about your gps . I'm still old school, I just lick my finger and put it in the wind lol . I will defiantly try this app out . How big are the saved tracks on your phone MB wise .

      G'mornin WW. Taking a chance on your old school method is not "finger lickin' good" - lol - get it? Haha!
      The best part about this app is the storage space it "doesn't" use. The biggest space users are the map ateas you need to download, but even those are minuscule compared to the amount of space on most phones. And considering most android tablets and phones accept external drives, your question about required space becomes even more irrelevant because the app can be loaded to the SD Drive.

    What size memory card is recommendable for downloading the maps and aerials? Thanks! Great review!

    • @quaddingsous
      @quaddingsous  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Preston.
      The BCN maps, waypoints and tracks take very little space, so you don't even need a card, especially if your phone/tablet has at least 32gb of on-board memory. The phone I use as my GPS unit only has 16gb of on-board memory and I'm currently only using 8.94gb , If you are using your actual phone (which I also do, as a back-up), then you may want to have a storage card if your phone only has 16gb of on-board memory.
      Hope this helps.

    Check out world maps, Worldwide imagery through Arcgis. It is Arial like google earth, but with better resolution for most of the northern continent. Its free to download on BCN. It was much better than the USA maps and I'm in usa Florida. For a long time I wanted to download google arial but google has made that virtually impossible. Now I find Arcgis on BCN and its better than google for my trail zone. You might just love. Free Download for offline use and never expires. Amazing to me.

    Nice video Q. Me and my father have recently been getting into the whole ATV video thing and this app looks great. We have the video thing down but have been lacking a good GPS/tracking software and this looks like a great one to try. Slightly off topic if you don't mind, how are you able to record your buddies audio over your communicators onto your audio stream? I know Cubbee and CK do it via Sena communicators and the Sena GP10 however me and my father use Cardo units so that's not really an option especially since the GoPro has the Digipower 6 hour battery back attached to the back where the Sena GP10 has to attach. We still don't even have an external mic which we desperately need because the audio form the GoPro built-in mic sucks :) By the way I've almost got all of your videos watched. I started with the oldest and have been working my up up to present.

    • @quaddingsous
      @quaddingsous  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rod,
      I use an external mic from my GoPro to the communication speaker in my helmet to record my buddies audio onto my GoPro video. You can also put a GoPro on your bud's helmet and just record the audio, then add it into the story line in your editing software. This is a little more tricky to do though.
      That's so cool that you're watching all the old stuff too - LOL - some of it isn't very good, but I greatly appreciate the support!
      Do you have a TH-cam channel you are using for your ATV videos? If so, can you send me a link so I can check it out?
      Thanx for the comments and for watchin'! Greatly appreciated!
      (PS: Where do you live? I may have already asked you this, but I talk to so many people on TH-cam that I forget all the details - lol)

    • @rodsmith5812
      @rodsmith5812 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@quaddingsous Thanks for the reply. So you are using just a single external mic from the GoPro attached more or less to the speaker by your ear. Interesting, I never would have thought the mic would be so sensitive to pick up what's coming out of the speaker plus from your own voice. Very good to know. This will have to be as simple to do as possible for my father because there is no way he would be able to figure out the editing software enough to blend 2 audio streams, I would have to do it all myself :) What do you use for a case then because the standard GoPro case is completely sealed. Do you use a particular aftermarket model or just cut a hole in the standard case?
      Yeah I like starting at the older stuff and moving forward when watching all your guys videos. I did the same for Cubbee, Rob Farrow and MaritimerATV. I like seeing how you all learn the technology over time and get better and better audio and video due to hardware upgrades not to mention I see all of the ATV upgrades you all do progressively over time as well. :)
      No I don't have a channel of my own. Even though our video quality is good the audio is basically non existent due to relying on the internal mic plus the GoPro is always in it's waterproof case. Once we get the external mics then learn some rudimentary editing skills to shorten the videos perhaps at that point :)
      I live out on the east cost, in N.S.

      Sorry for the late reply Rod! For some reason your comment (along with several others from about a month ago) got thrown into my spam folder & I didn't find them until now. Stupid fricken TH-cam!
      Yes, a single external mic, but I've wired in another speaker to the front of my helmet in the chin guard and have the mic sitting beside it. This is an extremely delicate operation as the wires are very small, making them difficult to solder.
      I've cut a hole in the standard case and sealed it up with silicone. Put a little Vaseline on the mic cord, plug it in, then apply the silicone. When the silicone dries it won't stick to the cord & when you pull the cord out, you're left with a perfectly formed opening.
      NS is a beautiful Province! Been there once, but not long enough. Need to go back. My wife and I are talking about it (she has a cousin living close to St.John), but not sure it will ever happen.

      You can delete the tracks individually or in a clump. On the top left corner of your screen is an icon with 3 horizontal lines. Touch it and it will give you a drop down list. Go to "List Tracks or Waypoints", then select the track or tracks you want to delete. If you hold your finger on the track, it will highlight. You can then touch all the other tracks you want to delete and they will be highlighted. When you are finished making your selection, touch the garbage can icon near the top right of the screen.

My phone screen is brighter, crisper, more clear, and easier to use than my Garmin screen. Having said that, I will admit I don't have the best Garmin available, but it still cost 15 times more than my phone + BCN combined. My phone was free with the 2 year plan I signed up for and I paid $10 for BCN 5 years ago.

      Sorry again Gunny. I just noticed your reply after I sent my 2nd reply. As long as you don't mean "ipad" when you say "tablet", then yes, you can do that. All u need is a google sign in, which you have with TH-cam.

    • @GunnyE9
      @GunnyE9 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, no iPad stuff here. My Garmin 600 cost me $600 yrs ago, so they aren't cheap. However, my phone, an LG G6 or my Samsung Galaxy 3, the screens suck in bright sunlight - think, outside on the ATV ... so I've been looking at tablets that have brighter screens of 1000 nits or more. But most are pricey. But I may have found one I can use, & yes, it's more than $10 or even $50. But it has a 10 inch screen. And after I sent my message, I realized I shouldn't have any issue getting to the net at home. I'll just connect to my WiFi like all my grandkids do & I should be able to download the apps I want. Thanks for the replies.

      kschab
      The phone/tablet is much much better to use than the Garmin. Much quicker to traverse from screen to screen because if the "touchscreen" capabilities and the way the program is set up.

    Hahaha. Right off the bat LMAO Then you get serious hahahaha. Ok That is a pretty cool app. Although I don't have an android device I believe I talk to you before and there's a different app for iPhone?
    That was quite the collection of phones you had in there buddy!
    For $15 bucks that's a heck of a deal cheaper than buying a Garman GPS unit. One question I have is are you an importer or exporter just wondering??

      An importer or exporter . . . BAHAHAHA!!!
      There's an app for iPhones called MotionX, but Taco says it's not as good. Just buy a used Android phone & you're in business. I'm due for an upgrade on my actual phone in a few months, so I'll have an extra one if you want to buy one off me - lol. Or, you could just go to Walmart and buy a cheap 7" Android tablet for $50. It'll work the same, but it might be a little large to mount to your handlebars - LOL

      Yeah I don't have any extra smart phones. I would probably just get an android device and use that app it seems to be a good one.
      The Garmin unit that I have on my bike does a pretty good job at making our tracks. Although it doesn't have any Maps downloaded it just makes the map where are you travel and you can mark way points as well of course.
      BTW nice tutorial.

      Why thank you KC - muchly appreciated!
      You can buy a used android phone on-line for $50 (try kijiji, varage, amazon, etc) My suggestion is to get something you can buy a good case for (ie: Otterbox Defender) and a decent unit so you don't have to keep replacing it. You won't be disappointed with this app, especially considering the cost difference between this and a Garmin unit with maps.

      KC, have you ever checked out Gaia? It's a GPS app for iPhones. Here's the link to a tutorial video I found on Gaia: th-cam.com/video/KhZlQuvX-Uc/w-d-xo.html

      Hey bud how-ya doing i'll check that out. Although I only have one phone so I probably wouldn't want to use it as a GPS on my quad too risky getting it torn up mud, dirt stuff like that you know what I mean? Although I do have insurance on my phone. Who would've ever thought insurance on a phone crazy Huh!

    Hey Q you can run this app on any phone and buy one or more provinces to boot very similar to that app www.backroadmapbooks.com/gps-maps/western-canada-gpsmaps/bc-gps-maps/bc-backroad-gps-maps

      Thanx for the info atvguy63.
      Like I mentioned in my video, BackCountry Nav is only a fraction of the price of a Garmin unit, not to mention those maps you provided the link to. Instead of spending $400 - $1,000 on a Garmin with maps, BCN will cost you under $20.
      Thanx for the comments and for watchin' bud!

      yw yeah that app is like 20 ish bucks year works in same manner as yours

    • @quaddingsous
      @quaddingsous  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      $20/year for the Garmin maps? Is that what you're saying?

    • @normsatv
      @normsatv 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quaddingsous i pay 20 ish bucks year i buy b.c province only 12 bucks yr can buy more i then buy 3 sets add on for less than 3 bucks each like atv trails / snowmobile trails / rec trails all adds up to just over 20 yr works offline gps just like yours .

      @quaddingsous  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, OK, got ya. Thanx bud. So it's still quite a bit more than BCN which is only $15 (one time payment) and comes with all the maps. I bought this app about 5 years ago for $11 and have loaded it on numerous devices without paying a penny more. The Garmin maps would have added up to over $100 by now. And that's just the maps. The Garmin GPS unit is an extra cost on top of the maps. If you have an android phone, you may want to try it to see what I'm talking about. The screen on my Garmin isn't anywhere near as nice (big, clear, easy to use, etc) as the screen on my phone. Just sayin'.
