The nets might help with that too. We have a lot of squirrels but they didn’t bother the Kajari melons. I really enjoy the melons definitely be in the garden next year
I'm in zone 8, and I just planted some seeds for the first time. Fingers crossed that the seedlings come up and that the squirrels don't dig them up. Thanks for the video!

I will be trying Kajari and Model melons this year. Already have sprouts! Got the seeds from Baker Creek that had great reviews.. Hoping they will be good producers here in Charlotte NC.
I use some cheap panty hose from walmart, cut them in sections and pull them over my cantaloupes, with plastic coated tie wire to tie it off to the trellis or the strongest part of the vine itself. Works for me.
I've just got one started, I'm zone 10b in S. Fl. Heat, rain, humidity, and insects are pretty bad in the summer months, and with such mild winters most of us garden through fall, winter, and spring. I keep reading how these love heat though, so if the one I started now as a trial doesn't do well, guess I will retry later. I am excited to try these.
Definitely worth a try. If you start them indoors it will give you a head start. They grow pretty fast once it warms up. I wish you the best of luck with them and a great gardening season 😀
A thick layer of straw or fluffy mulch underneath the melons will protect the melon from the fall .. as for pests , most don’t eat much because they have tiny bellies
Agreed. As you can see my garden is pretty small so vertical growing is very helpful in my particular situation. The leaf footed bug in small numbers is not a major problem but they multiply pretty quickly and seemed to like the Kajari melons a lot. That situation improved once I put a few sunflowers out as they spent more time on them. I guess I’ll be planting those earlier and watching closer for the LFBs 😀 Thank you for your input. I used fish emulsion and miracle grow organic alternating every 2 weeks. This year they are in a raised bed so I may not fertilize quite as often. Some of the roots grew out from the grow bags so they reached pretty deep. Thank you for your interest. Have a great gardening season 😀
I’m thinking I may do another video in the next few days to talk about growing Kajari melons so keep a look out for that. You can order seeds from baker creek at “rareseeds.com”. Mine are up on the trellis but not as far along as this time last year. They definitely grow faster in the heat and don’t seem to mind the humidity in central AR. Thanks for you interest. Typically about 7 per plant minimum. Some years several more. They are worth the effort to me. I don’t how the space to let them sprawl so it’s not bad for vertical growing 😀 Thank you for watching. Have a nice weekend 😀
The bags are about 2 inches wide and 15 inches tall when empty. They have a lot of stretch in them and can easily accommodate the largest kajari melons. They are not available at present on amazon but there is a similar product. I believe if you search for fruit bags you will find them 😀
