This was at the end of the Ozzy era, but the fact that it was a hit (during Punk & New Wave) and upbeat makes it feel like a big, triumphant return here to TOTPs.

1:07 - If you've listened to their library, you will appreciate the supreme meaning of irony when you consider the fact that Never Say Die was only their 2nd top 40 hit.

It was only their 2nd single. They were always against singles as they thought it attracted hangers on, not real fans

@@christschinwonThat can't be correct, as, somewhere, I have a copy of the single 'Symptom of the Universe' with 'Children of the Grave' on the other side. That would have been released between 'Paranoid' in 1970 and 'Never Say Die' in 1978. So that is at least 3, but I bet there were other singles.

@@portcullis5622 right, I was going by Tony's book but I see it's the 2nd single to receive a chart position, not a relesse

He’s probably thinking like, why’s this thing so heavy? SG’s are one of the lightest guitars and Les Paul’s are ridiculously heavy. SG’s feel like they’re at most 1/3 the weight of a Les Paul. It probably saves many guitarists from getting back issues to choose an SG instead of an LP. Although you do miss out on the sustain from the weight of a heavy guitar. I wonder what Toni iommi would’ve sounded like if he used a Les Paul instead of an SG. He’d probably have a bluesier and somewhat slower sound but heavier than he sounds with the SG.

The audio was the studio version. You can hear Tony bending the G string up on the 19th fret while seeing his hand actually playing first position A. Still love them, though.

EVERYONE mimed on TOTP back then. Occasionally they’d allow a singer to sing over backing tapes but that was very rare. It wasn’t until the 90’s that they regularly allowed singers to sing live, and much later allowed bands to play live.

This is a recording but the performance was pretty good. Bill was crushing it on the drums. Tony looked a little bored. Ozzy put on a good show like always. Geezer was barely visible.

Lip syncing. Seems like maybe the drums, and guitar are playing along with the track. Ozzy never sang that well, live. Anyway, it's exactly like the album.

Toni playing a Les Paul?? Geezer playing a Gibson EB bass?? 1:20 Sabbath has had over 20 different members?? What the hell is going on here?
This is so wrong. In 1978, Sabbath had NOT had over 20 members and the instruments used I've never seen used again by Toni & Geezer ever. 😲🧐

Thr original.TotP performance was in 1978, but this clip with the captions is from a much later series 'Guitar Heroes' from (I would guess) the late 1990s or early 2000s, by which time Sabbath probably had featured more than 20 different musicians. I can think of at least 4 other vocalists (after Ozzy) and they had several drummers.

A LOT of people passed through Sabbath. There's not an official number, but I think it could be around 25-30
