  • I sail from Heywood Island to Baie Fine in a bit of rain and uncertain winds.
Pocket-cruising in my Montgomery 17 sailboat “Thabo” in solo single-handed in July 2024. This is part 11 of the North Channel series.

One way to get the wind to pick up is to start the motor. I sometimes do solo trips and sometimes with family..its always fun to aee who will be the first to say to fire up the motor.

Love your videos. Have you ever considered a crossing of one of the Great Lakes (Wisconsin to Michigan) in your small boat?

@@Mount46Rain Thank you! Absolutely I’m up for big voyages. I did already go across and back Superior. Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/FL_myQdga6Y/w-d-xo.html. I’ve considered a Lake Michigan crossing (Manistique, Beaver Island, Little Traverse Bay) but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

@ that’s a great video as well! I have been slowly building the gumption to attempt some “offshore” lake MI passages on a San Juan 21. That route looks interesting. Ive sailed quite a bit in grand traverse bay which is exceedingly pleasant with great anchorages and fantastic dining establishments. Have you done any cruising in door county WI?

@ Yes I grew up in Green Bay so pretty well travelled in that area. My first trip in this boat was actually Kewaunee, Baileys Harbor, Deaths Door (in a gale), Washington Island, Sturgeon Bay. The wind always seems to die at night and you gotta watch out for freighters. The nice thing about the North Channel is you’re always like 3 miles from a safe harbor. Lake Michigan harbors can be pretty far apart sometimes.
