    Thank you for the entertainment while I cleaned my kitchen! My door on my dishwasher pulled off last week. We took it apart only to realize that there was no metal reinforcement around the screw holes and the force of pulling the door open finally wore out the plastic. John added a piece of metal and a washer and fixed it. It actually feels solid now! Good luck with your install and happy butterfly counting!😀

    This was a great Mon. morning video. Have not seen more pollinators only biting flies. Stay cool this week, we are just coming out of a 100F week. After the talk of Richard's hair being to big to do plumbing, I am picturing him trying to fit his head through a door like in the Shining......heeeeeres. Richard! Laura

    I noticed that because we don't use any pesticides on our property we have lots of insects and creatures . we have lots of dragon flies, toads, frogs and lizards and they say that is a sign your invinroment is healthy. I also grow things that they are drawn to.

    • @RichardandPaul
      @RichardandPaul  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes we certainly are pesticide free on the plots and at home. I'm trying to introduce as many attractant plants as possible into the back garden and you do notice the difference.

    You two!
    On the topic of pollinators, last year we had a bumper crop of bumblebees. This year?
    We high five one another when we see one. Don't know what's happened. Same for everything. Barely
    any Cabbage Whites. Hardly any butterflies. Loads of rabbits and robins. (north american robins).
    Last year it was Redwing Blackbirds. This year it's Robins.
    Even the weeds are different. Seems they ebb and flow as to which ones are dominant.
    We've had loads of rain and my plot is a jungle. I can barely get around.
    No flying ants. The European Fire ants were on the Balsam earlier this year and now I don't see
    any of them anywhere. I think possibly I am not growing anything that attracts insects that they
    like to eat. Usually they will consume the instars of potato and cucumber beetles. These days
    people at the allotments say they are not seeing potato beetles or cucumber beetles anymore.
    The ants keep them in check.
    Probably once the beans are producing, the ants will reappear.
    Maybe the European Fire Ants have had an adverse effect on the Bumblebee population. That's a
    thought. They are vicious. Except I found out that Pharaoh ants (little grease ants) will wipe out
    Fire ant colonies. Wars of the Ants....

    As far as when to plant, and pollinators, I think its due to whatever the weather is doing, which fluctuates. This spring we had a cooler wetter year, good for radishes, lettuce and peas. If it turned hotter and drier things would have bolted, but it changes from year to year. We're in the middle of a major heat wave but its due to break Monday.
    I had 1 flying ant, it was HUGH.. I thought it was just the females that had wings? Since there is only 1 queen, I thought they destroy any other females , so they flee. Could be myth.

    If you are interested in plants for dry conditions a great resource is the Beth Chatto dry garden. Google it!!! She made the most marvellous garden out of an old gravel car park.

      @RichardandPaul  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will take a look... thankyou!

    • @OldGardenerGuy
      @OldGardenerGuy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couldn't post the URL from my phone but here it is now. It is a dry garden that never gets watered except for the meagre rainfall in the area. I visited it once when I lived in the UK and it is quite spectacular. She has done loads of research into plants which survive dry conditions and they also sell plants, but they are pretty expensive. I expect you could get them cheaper elsewhere.

    I'd like to think more bees and insects is because people are finally planting more native plants for them. I know I have made an effort to plant more things for bees and insects. Never even heard of flying ants till this week sounds like a horror show.

    • @RichardandPaul
      @RichardandPaul  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The flying ants are a bit freaky, especially if you find yourself in a swarm! But they are harmless.

    • @KarenBowers4
      @KarenBowers4 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RichardandPaul Having never even heard of them till this year I think I would be scared to death to find myself in the middle of them. Is it really only one day? Such an odd thing, I don't believe it happens here in Northern California.

    • @RichardandPaul
      @RichardandPaul  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1
