Hi, that's an interesting one - I've never had that happen to me as a buyer or as a seller; did that happen to you? How would they get your address if you didn't bid?
I'm not sure - I think eBay can spot suspicious bidding, but I don't know how sophisticated it is. Bids which go too high have a higher chance of not being paid, so it would be self-defeating I think.
So, James, I couldn't agree more with your opinion about 2nd chance offers. I had a non-paying winning bidder, who after repeatedly outbidding everyone else for 5 days, never responded to messages to pay or any other message. After listing ended on my high dollar item ($1400.00), Ebay cancelled the transaction for non pay and I then 2nd chance offered it to next two highest bidders in line, neither of which even responded, with a buy or even a counter. So, based on both your's and my experience, I will probably not waste my time with 2nd chance offers in the future. Now, hold that thought for a moment as I now contemplate whether to relist it immediately or wait a week or two and just enter it as a new listing rather than relist it, knowing several ebayer's will recognize the relisting. Got any thoughts on that? Very much enjoyed your video and your take on the Ebay non paying bidders.
Thank you! I know it's so frustrating. I think there are some benefits to making a new listing vs relisting as far as the eBay algorithm goes, but I'm not sure how important that is with auctions because I think they get more views anyway. Depending on the nature of the item I would be tempted to list it as Buy It Now straight away as timewasters are normal, but if you wait a week it might look like it got returned which is worse. I would relist at a price you've seen bids at in the bid history, but I suppose it depends on how fast you want the money. One thing i've been trying recently with higher ticket items is to put them on auction for the price I want or close to it, (but still very competitive in relation to BIN prices) and allow offers with no floor limit. People know that they can offer you 50-75% of the bid, haggle and maybe get it dispatched today, rather than wait for someone else to snap it up / bid and either lose out or wait a week to win it, so the scarcity / urgency thing really helps. Good luck with getting that sale :)
Hi, I wouldn't usually bother giving negative feedback to someone for not paying, unless they did something extreme and tried to scam or blackmail me. Some people are flaky, some have genuine issues, some bid on things they shouldn't, you never really know what's going on with the other person. If they gave me negative feedback AND didn't pay to boot I would probably leave them positive feedback with a sh*togram in the comment and then report them to eBay for feedback extortion. :)
With my new seller account I cannot automatically cancel an order before 30 days and it is not possible to change it. I was thinking of putting my items only with BUY NOW and without a best offer. It's really annoying when I accept an offer and the buyer never pays.
hi, I didn't realise that was a thing for new seller accounts - the only remedy I can think of is to go to your orders (in My eBay > Selling) and click 'sell similar' to effectively relist it without relisting. In the unlikely even that the first buyer pays after you have sold it for a second time you could always refund them further down the line - It's not an ideal way of doing it and definitely not "eBay approved" but if you need the money in a hurry then this is what I would do. Good luck with your selling :)
Hi. Very helpful vid. I wonder if you can help me; I won an ebay "auction" for £200, but ebay is asking me to pay now, when I'd rather pay cash on collection. Also, "after" winning, they deleted my message, including my phone number to the seller. Thanks.
Hi, yes eBay is more likely to get it's money that way, as the seller could simply say that they 'cancelled' the order and eBay would lose out on £25. If you pay online, they will let you send your phone number / contact details freely with the seller in the eBay message system. Sometimes eBay might send you a code to go and collect the item with and then the seller can type that code in and that makes it all official and easier to communicate with the seller, but perhaps because it is a large amount of money (or if you or the seller have relatively new accounts?), they are forcing you to pay online. If you can pay online, that would make it easier, if you only have cash, you could try to send a photo of your phone number to the seller in a message, but I would be SUPER discrete about it ie take a picture of a related item in your house with the number written on a bit of paper next to that item and don't write "Here's my phone number" in the message, write something like "Do you think would look good next to this this ? See picture" as if the message is reviewed by a human they might ban or suspend you. Hope this helps, good luck!
I think the second chance offer option only appears once the auction has ended, but before the winning bidder pays. If no-one bid or if there was only one bidder, the option won't appear. If you click on the bids number next to the item, it might show that you have lots of bids, but they could all be from the same bidder. The option can only exist if the auction has finished with more than one bidder, but before the winning bidder has paid. If you relist it, the option might still be there on the item in your 'orders' tab, but it won't be there on the listing in your active listings because it has not been 'won' yet. Hope this helps :)
I don’t do bids. My wife listed something and forgot to cut bidding off and I didn’t notice it and someone bided. It’s been 2 days with still no payment. So I’m waiting the 4 days and I’m going to cancel it and repost it without a bid. Bidding is a waste of time. If never used the bid option because I figured this would be the outcome.
I totally understand the frustration - Bidding is great when you just need something gone and you don't mind how much for, but I must admit I've only done one auction in the last 3 months or so out of my 700+ items listed.
If you relist the item, do you not have to worry about the statement that ebay send you for their percentage of the sale? I just sold something for a couple hundred, no payment received, and I relisted it, but I still see in my selling dashboard that the amount for the bid win is still there.
That's a great question! There are 2 parts to this, the money and the statements. MONEY - eBay now only take their final value fees from pay outs, whereas before they would pay out after a day and charge you fees at the end of the month. That's not always the case with auctions if they think someone could have collected it from you, as they can still charge you the fee, but if you relist and cancel the first sale you should be fine. STATEMENTS - In my experience it will all even itself out within one calendar month, if not sooner. I know that can be a long time when you need the money, but if eBay show a fee taken from you in one statement which isn't taken (or is refunded to you) it should show up corrected on the next statement. I don't think eBay will take any money from you if you relisted it and cancelled the sale, but if they do, you can contact customer services and get it refunded. Good luck! :)
So far, it's been one day and the person that won my auction hasn't paid yet. Maybe, it's a really inconvenient time. I really feel pressured to send the item and I hate that there is the option, "Mark as paid" even though the buyer hasn't paid. The last two times I marked the item as paid, the buyers got to keep a pair of two shoes and got their money back because they emailed me saying that I ripped them off. I had to pay them back for the shoes and the shipping. Why does the Mark as Pay option even exist which enables stuff like this to happen?
Hi, , thanks for sharing. I only ever use 'Mark as Paid' when it's for local collection and I think that is the only reason it exists and I can't think of another situation when it should be used, ever. I don't consider an item 'Sold' until the bidder pays and neither does eBay, so you shouldn't feel pressured into sending things. I would never send anything unless someone has paid, and I wouldn't accept payment outside of eBay unless it is cash on collection. If people ask to pay via paypal outside of eBay or some other app, just say 'No' and then report them to eBay. I hope this helps.
How can they get their money back if they didnt pay? And why did you mark it as paid if they hadn't? And are you saying you sent them the shoes even though they hadn't paid?
I recently sold my Mortal Kombat 1 game but eBay said the buyer has paid. So, I shipped it to the person... eBay now saying my payment is on hold. I waited and I never received money. But the buyer received the game 😢.
if the payment is "on hold" it's usually an eBay thing, not the buyer paying - if it was the first thing you've sold on eBay or at least on that account then eBay will hold the money for 21 days, to make sure you're not a scammer.
Hi, it is a long time since I used it, but it used to be an option in the 'Orders' tab, if you click on the blue drop-down arrow next to the order near where it says 'view order details' there are lots of different things you can do like issue refunds and contact buyer etc; one of those might be 'Second Chance offer' but I don't know if it is time limited and I suppose it can only be there if you had more than one bidder. If it's not there, I recommend a one-day auction if you need the cash quickly. Good luck!

I had about 10% dead beat buyers, no pay. So I switched to buy it now, immediate payment required. End of problem.
I wish people would just be honest if they don’t want the item anymore after winning/buying it , but I guess that’s asking for too much
