I re-watched Gremlins for the first time in a long while a few years back, the lip animation on the smart gremlin is pretty impressive, you can see a good attempt to have his mouth form proper phoneme shapes was made. It's quite a difference from the "suffocating fish" look you normally get with the mouth movements on puppet characters. A lot of the blue screen effects look very rough though. The sorta roughness that, if they were a CGI effect, would have the usual goons calling for the summary execution of the animator and all the members of their family.
Yeah, the scenes where they composited Gizmo walking were really the only "bad" effects in all of Gremlins 2. Otherwise, it's amazing how well most of the VFX hold up.
Gizmo for the 1984 film they had to build sets with holes for different variations of the puppet, there is one scene which if you notice in the VHS version that there is two Gizmo's in the shot of Billy taking Gizmo to get bandaged after falling into his bin, the Gizmo that he is carrying gets placed in the sink while the other Gizmo sitting on the edge of the sink gets bandaged, in the old VHS movie version you can just see the tips of the other Gizmo's ears which is a give away of the other prop being used. Also a Gizmo prop was doubled up as another Mogwai sleeping with the other Mogwais which is noticed in shot before the scene where Barney is tied up outside with Christmas lights, with so many inconsistencies in the film it actually gets away with it without ruining the movie.
Speaking of puppets and lip-syncing, how about covering the 80s Little Shop Of Horrors someday? The ways they got Audrey Jr to sing alongside Rick Moranis were really impressive, not to mention all the work Moranis had to put in.
I showed the gremlins movie for summerween this weekend and my gosh…. Even by today’s standards this movie looks fantastic. These high quality puppets really brought the characters to life
Tedious pedantry, but in 1984, the walking Gremlin would have been composited into the alley shot by a chemical and/or optical process, not "digitally," and it's not "projection tape" that is "cut," it's film - actual celluloid film - that melts (because the projection lamp is so hot).

The eyes do, yeah. And, I mean, it's roughly the same technology. Furbys were consumer-level animatronics.
Even today, I still think animatronics, puppetry, and sfx are more realistic than CGI. Look at Anaconda and how scary that snake was!
