Mark: An Eyewitness Account

  • The Gospel of Mark is believed to be too late to be a reliable account of Jesus. However, the evidence suggests the opposite is true. Mark likely wrote his account by utilizing eyewitness testimony. His Gospel is a reliable account of Jesus. A special thanks to Stephen Boyce and Luuk ven de Weghe for helping with this video.

      @InspiringPhilosophy Hey, Michael! You should do a video about whether or not verses 9-20 should be included in Mark 16, and whether or not they are accurate, and written by Mark. All sorts of Bibles now are counting those verses out, either bracketing them, or discluding them from the text. And when those verses are removed, there are no post-resurrection appearances of Jesus recorded in the gospel.

    Aside from the fact that Mark’s connection to Peter was well known among the early church fathers and is attested by other parts of the New Testament (1 Pet 5:13; Acts 12:12-17), the Gospel of Mark itself draws connections to Peter by forming another literary inclusio that centers on Peter himself-the first disciple mentioned in Mark is Peter (Mk 1:16) and the last disciple mentioned is Peter (Mk 16:7). Moreover, both of these mentions of Peter are quite emphatic-Mark goes out of his way to bring Peter to the forefront of each passage. This Petrine inclusio, combined with the inordinately high number of times the name Peter occurs in the Gospel and the manner in which Peter dominates the narratives of the disciples, makes it clear that Peter was to be understood as the “main eyewitness source behind Mark’s gospel.” Hengel observes, “Simon Peter is as a disciple named first and last in the Gospel to show that it is based on his tradition and therefore his authority.”

      I think a lot of it comes from an ontological prejudice against miracles. And, more importantly, a strong assumption against the extraordinary. In my opinion, these biases don't just run against the miraculous, but extraordinary events in general.
      Leibniz, the philosopher famed for calculus and monads, made a point that God never does things out of order, so that miracles aren't necessarily against created orders (perhaps we can say natural laws), but rather are against our ordinary experience. I think Leibniz could be correct, in that the prejudice against miracles is a prejudice and projection of ordinary experience (example: "I've never seen it, ergo it can't happen"), rather than an appeal to true natural order and regularity.

    Great video.
    I think that (i) the unanimous testimony of the Church fathers (including Papias who was collecting his information when some disciples of Jesus were still alive- Aristion and John the Elder) and (ii) the extensive internal evidence (the names correctly reflecting 1st Century Judea, the listing of the 12 disciples by name, the specific naming of a few not so relevant individuals for no particular reason other than seemingly because these persons were known- e.g., Simon of Cyrene father of Alexander and Rufus, the early semitism in some passages suggesting authentic sayings, the description of Jewish customs pre-70AD, not mentioning the destruction of the Temple, the relative modest claims about Jesus travels - as opposed to Apollonius of Tyana who traveled to Rome, India, and Spain according to Philostratus, etc.) both point toward the very probable fact that Mark was an early Gospel written by an eyewitness of Peter.

  • @jackricky5453
    @jackricky5453 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Another interesting point is that there is decent evidence to suggest that the longer ending of Mark was written by Ariston of Smyrna, who was actually an eyewitness and a disciple who would have known Jesus personally. This is likely Papias' source for the Markan gospel.

All sorts of Bibles now are counting those verses out, either bracketing them, or discluding them from the text. And when those verses are removed, there are no post-resurrection appearances of Jesus recorded in the gospel.
