  • I filmed this a little while ago when the controversy around Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert episode with Jonathan Van Ness popped off, but then I backed off on posting it because I think that it doesn't quite hit on what was said in the episode. I do still think there's some useful content here though, so please watch with an open mind. Thanks for being on this little side of the internet with me.

Yes yes yes! Also, I think one thing I would like to add to this conversation is that regret is a normal human emotion that people are capable of moving through. Also, we need to consider that removing the ability for children to get life saving affirmative care ABSOLUTELY can also cause feelings of regret and dysphoria amongst these very children you are trying to "protect."

    i started actively seeking HRT/blockers at 13
at 14, i was allowed to decide to have a risky spinal fusion that was not fully required but that may have improved pain.
i was only allowed to begin hormones at 15.
my spinal fusion can’t be reversed. the kind i got has a much higher regret and complication rate than HRT.
i’ve gone off and on HRT a few times over the years, and any time i regret or dislike something, i can easily change it by rebalancing my hormones.
hormone blockers are also infinitely more reversible than puberty. i was forced to go through the wrong puberty, which meant a lot of significant changes i couldn’t reverse or chose.
i genuinely just don’t believe people spreading this fearmongering are aware of that, and i really appreciate bringing up the other procedures children have.
hormone therapy and gender confirmation surgery has a lower regret rate than basically any other major optional intervention. people who are denied access to HRT/GCS are extremely likely to regret their forced puberties. so if we’re actually worried about regret, ban nose jobs and give everyone who asks a hormone blocker.

I know it can be hard to reverse voice changes but I agree that parents and children should have autonomy and choices. I think regret can come from making transgender choices as child or even failing to make those choices at a younger age.

I listened the day it was released and although Jonathon cried he was so eloquent and knowledgeable and educated people who frankly had the same legitimate concerns that Dax had. One being, labeling people trans phobs when they even speak about trans issues that doesn’t fit the party line. This is maligning Allies. Dax gave Jonathon a forum that reached millions and I know for me quenched the need to argue some of the points Dax was making.
