Itachi's death was the trigger for unlocking the mangekyo, not orochimaru. Itachi, dispite being the focus of Sasuke's rage, was the closest person to him emotionally speaking.
Sasuke didn’t awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan immediately after Itachi’s death but after finding out the truth about Itachi and reminiscing how much his brother truly loved him, leaving Sasuke in tears. That’s when Sasuke unlocked the Mangekyo Sharingan.
This is where Sasuke realized that Itachi power level wasn't built off the MS. In fact, you could say Itachi barely used his MS because he had it ever since he was like 14 and dies near blindness at 21-22. So he had it for years. Sasuke was at a similar level of blindness within probably a month or 2 because he used MS as a crutch, instead of a last resort. In most cases Itachi never really needed his MS. Full power Orochimaru that laughed in Kakashi's face was defeated by a regular sharingan genjutsu when trying to take over Itachi's body.
He got it because he killed (or thought he killed) Itachi. The whole last battle was for Itachi to remove the curse mark from Sasuke, atone for killing Uchiha clan, and for Sasuke to witness his death and awaken is Mangekyo.

Now, this new Shippuden Sasuke design makes him look evil and psychotic, and it evokes his hatred being unleashed to the world. Other than the new outfit, the biggest change to Shippuden Sasuke’s design is his hair. Before in the end of Part 1 and throughout the beginning of Shippuden, Sasuke’s hair didn’t cover his forehead, but now, Sasuke has bangs that cover his forehead. I’ve always wondered why Kishimoto made this change to Sasuke’s design, and people have said that it refers to the character change Sasuke goes through; being more psychotic and emo. Also, I remember someone saying that it symbolizes Sasuke ultimately turning against the Leaf village. His previous hairstyle that exposed his forehead symbolized the high chance that Sasuke will come back to the village after killing Itachi, and now this new hairstyle that gives him bangs that cover up his forehead symbolizes that outcome no longer happening.

He didn't kill Itachi. Itachi could have killed Sasuke at anytime in the fight. Itachi's speed was so great that Kakashi with his own sharingan struggled to keep up against a holding back Itachi with no real desire to kill him. Itachi could have started off with suasanoo against Sasuke, totsuka blade 1 shot him, just like Orochimaru. Itachi's illness killed him.
In episode 3 of OG when we meet Sasuke for the first time we see for a moment Sasuke dealing with this repressed memory but we the viewer only see him asking himself about someone crying... it was one of the most subtle foreshadowing moments in the series
Parallel between Naruto playing DBZ Goku's role and Sasuke being Vegeta-like are so uncanny, lol. Not to mention both of their clans nearly went extinct just like the saiyans did. Naruto the good, Sasuke the bad. The whole fighting and conflict between them. Kishimoto seriously paid so much of a tribute to Toriyama who he considered his sensei and a real role model when it comes to manga and anime. Naruto and Sasuke event took over the theme colors after Goku and Sasuke for the most part. 😊

Nope, he actually awakened it immediately after Itachi died, look closely when the blood from Itachi's hand on sasuke's forehead drops down at one end of his eye, the other end of that same eye sheards blood too which was his MS awakening but they made it in a way that we wouldn't catch it immediately
