I'm a Timex Nerd. 90% of my collection is Timex because I fell in love with my first Timex 45 years ago. Now I am digging the direction of the company with their reissues and can't stop my Timex addiction. Also my late mentor John Bogle wore a Timex. His net worth was 60 million, but wore a 20 year old Timex and drove a 16 year old Volvo. I don't have a net worth of 60 million, but have enough to buy a luxury watch, but I'm just not that kind of person. I also drive a 12 year old Nissan Versa which I love as much as some guys love their Mercedes. I'm just a weirdo.

I guess I'm a special event kind of watch collector. I like to buy watches to mark a special occasion or milestone. When I achieve a goal I buy a watch as a reward. That way whenever I check the time I'm reminded of a special occasion or achievement. It also motivation to achieve more goals.

    Yet another great perceptive video,,,
I don't fall into any "collector" category, I'm just a working class guy, who loves watches in general, I'm currently saving for my one and only "grail" watch, (Omega Seamaster),, it's a way off still, but getting closer,,,
Till then, I'll live out my fantasy watch collection, by watching channels like yours, lol,,
all the best, and keep up the excellent content,,

How about the “mood watch” guy. Sometimes we want to wear what we feel, depending on our means to acquire such, and it doesn’t always have to be expensive or dependent on social conventions.

  • @opensage01
    @opensage01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

You forgot about my kind. "Low end and keep it to ten" I don't buy anything too expensive and keep my collecting to ten or less. I am even thinking about keeping my collection to 6 -7. Got to have a diver automatic(right now an Invicta), tachy automatic (right now a Tissot), light dial dress watch (always a Rado ceramic and will probably always have to be a quarts due to cost), black dial dress watch (also always a Rado ceramic, different style than the light dial), Seiko automatic (traditional no complications, or maybe a date and not a metal bracelet), a work beater (right now a $35 SO &CO with leather strap), and a rubber, or silicone, band for working on the car, cleaning, exercising, etc, watch (like a Timex Ironman, or could just wear my work watch like I do now). It is hard to get around to wearing just that many enough. So I am thinking of selling a couple. Great job. I had never put too much thought into the different types of collectors. Not many people I know even wear a watch anymore and if they do they are not watch enthusiasts in anyway. I think another type of collector could be called the Mod Guys, or Tinkerers and end up with collections (both assembled and in parts haha). I like tinkering a bit, but not big into it yet. Thanks for the video and cheers.

Great video, I’m not even sure where to start🤔 I’m a bit older than you and my holy trinity was always Rolex, Omega & Breitling but I could jump from the nerd crowd though I’m not after 10 dollar watches I do love some of my USSR & Russian Vostok Amphibia divers that are pretty much under a 100 bucks and at times the strap or bracelet cost more than the watch. Would really think I’m a dive watch fan and mechanical at that though in 1983 my boss at the time and business partner the last 30 years sold me a 1978 1675 GMT Master for 300.00 dollars and I wore it through the mid 80’s then gave it to my younger brother for free because I didn’t like the acrylic crystal and small crown😳 the main reason everyone wants them now and the biggest watch mistake I’ve made to date. Went through several submariners into the 90’s and still have a 16610 W serial from 1995 and a 16613 that I bought brand new from an AD in Carmel Ca on Jan 30 1999 and was a U serial transitional “SWISS” dial which was the first time Rolex used Luminova, Blue dial😉. Sorry this is going to be a book, then needed a blue dial Omega Seamaster Pro Bond from 2000; Breitling Super Ocean from 2002 and I’ve always felt it was better made than the Sub and Seamaster, might not of had rolexes movement but 1500meters and a better bracelet than both. Keep in mind I still have all these then picked up a Titanium Breitling chrono avenger, Breitling avenger sea wolf, Panerai submersible 00024, Longines legend diver, Kobold Seal, amazing Germany brand UTS 1000m anniversary diver, #0008 Stowa prodiver seatime, Fortis B-42 marine master a few homage pieces that I enjoy and aren’t made by the original brand anymore,Tudor & several vintage Seiko divers, in quartz I own the Bulova Lunar Pilot and original vintage Seiko Alien Ripley or the Giorgetto Giugiaro designed watch. Back to mechanical a vintage Seiko UFO, some newer Seiko divers and on and on and many more. I post on IG under twalk80 and it’s all the watches I have today, I just love watches and get joy from most pieces and as a collector the one watch that is a must, the Omega Speedmaster Pro Moon watch is one I don’t have🥺bought a used one years ago from what was called a amazon storefront and when it arrived it was a fake, the price was too good and I should have known better but amazon held on to my money and got it back and it put a bad taste in my mouth and never picked one up even though I know it’s a must for any collection. Well sorry again but I could go on forever about stuff I let go and sure I’ve got a bunch of odd stuff I didn’t mention so maybe a higher class nerd or maybe they don’t have a name for me🤔yes I do have a few g-shocks too, sorry again for goin on and on! Also about 50 straps for the Panerai, shitload for the legend diver and in total maybe 100 straps & aftermarket bracelets and ton of natos!

Not to me. I mean if that's their thing I don't hold it against them go in good health, but why limit yourself to one it's almost sad? I am the one watch-box guy. I have ten slots and I'll keep it at ten. There's a lot of beauty and pleasure in such a collection. And variety. There are quartz and autos and manuals with many beautiful dials. Most are under $1500 one is about $5000 some are under $500. I have plenty of peace of mind. Two slots remain empty and I'll fill them whenever something special comes around. This seems healthy to me.

In a way, I think we go through multiple stages of watch collecting. Through my 13 years of collecting, I've fallen into the flipper category and now I'm probably more in the watch box or watch nerd category. While I love my Rolex 114060, my 116000, or my Tudor BB36, I also get a lot of joy wearing my $350 Dan Henry 1964 chronograph and I bought a Casio F-91W just a couple weeks ago.
I also buy watches now to mark special occasions and I'm no longer interested in flipping - if I'm buying it, I'm keeping it. Once I start gifting my watches to my kids down the road, ultimately my goal is to become a 2 or 3 watch guy, maybe even a 1 watch guy. So ultimately, we work our way through the various categories of collectors over time.

I'm a "one watch guy" My James Cameron 126660 goes everywhere with me, and it always will. I love watches and love gaining knowledge about all brands both new and vintage but I can't imagine not seeing my deep-sea on my wrist. Hard to explain but I have peace in my tiny collection.

  • @casualsuede

I realised that buying tens of thousands of dollars of watches was a waste of money, even though I could afford to do so, so I sold many of my watches (over 50) and kept my practical watches (10 or so tool watches I actually use the functions of) because I've discovered that the thing that brings me the most joy in my life doesn't include material frivolities. This also included my car collection, my wine collection, even my house which enslaved me to these material possessions.
So I wonder what kind of watch collector I am?

  • @JupiterTarts
    @JupiterTarts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

While I definitely fall into your "one watch box" type, I consider myself a category you didnt mention: the strap collector.
I've got a dedicated 6 watch box, mostly modest Seikos, in my one box. However, I have dozens of Natos and quick change leathers and silicones for hundreds of possible combinations. I switch out my straps weekly and it feels like I've always got a new watch.

My collection is the “one of each” i.e. one field, dive, aviation, dress, casual, quartz, chronograph, as well a a beater. Although I do have a couple overlaps due to sentimental reasons, I try to keep my entire collection in one WatchBox....and the collection does shift over time but those few select pieces stay a permanent fixture in my collection.

I’m absolutely in love with “tool watches” especially dive watches. There’s something so romantic about having a watch that can go through everything with you in life be it good or bad. Some of the pieces I have remind me of such fond memories I strap them on if I’m having a bad day and it definitely helps.
As you said that one watch guy, oh how I admire that man.

I was a sentimental watch guy until the woman that gave the watch to me cheated on me and gave the watch bad juju. It was a Seiko automatic, and it stopped dead on the day we broke up. It lasted exactly as long as the relationship, to the day.

Always have been, but I flip all the time, usually break even ,give away to close friends,I manage to keep them down to 20or so, but there are some I cannot part with old sea dweller, explorer,tc 9bronze , etc.... I always buy used, so I need to watch this video again to work out where I’m at!! Horology is fascinating and it’s a great hobby, what helps is when the wife is slightly interested!

Yeah agreed 👍🏻 tried to be a 3 watch guy but I’m a watch box Collector. Trying to keep it under 10 as that’s how many spaces in my box.. including a Patek, an AP a few Rolex and some other personally interesting pieces. Each day I wear what takes my fancy. Love it

  • @houztx
    @houztx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

How about the guy or gal that really loves Watches and Horology, but does not have the income to play with the big boys and buy $10,000 pieces. To me he is that person that has a 10 or 20 piece collection of $500 to $1,000 per piece.
Now I know I know what's coming, if you have 10 $1,000 pieces just save and buy 1 Rolex. But maybe that is just not their personality.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I was thinking about the guys who collect a lot of pieces under $100 but i figured they were included in the 'Watch nerd' too. Thanks for hanging in there despite the video that enraged you.

I am struggling with this. All my watches are under $1000 . I like them all . Love my Seiko sarbo33. Love my Hamilton field automatic . I just got a seagull 1963 Chinese Pilot chronograph . Only $250 . It is such a interesting watch . The history . But But. I am love with the BB 58 . It is not the money . It is where the hell would I wear it ? My friends are not into watches. • @fletchoid

I only ever had cheap utilitarian watches and did not really understand what kind of idiot would pay more than $50 for a watch. For many years I didn't wear a wrist watch because my job made that a safety concern. After I retired, I began the slow, irritating process of downsizing. While cleaning out a junk drawer, I came across my late fathers Seiko, and wondered if I could fix it up and wear it. The next time I was near a jewelry store, I went in to ask about fixing that watch and made the mistake of looking at a watch display. It only took me about 10 minutes to be infected with the Watch disease. I went home and began researching watches in my price range, figuring that if I was only going to have one watch, it should be a really nice watch....... That theory went out the window quite quickly. I now have three decent watches (Dress, Casual, and Chronograph), and a long wish list of watches, new straps, clasps, tools, etc. on Amazon, and several other vendors sites. I am now the one box kind of collector. It has space for 6 watches...... that may not be big enough. Is there a Watches Anonymous addiction counselling group? I may need it.

No need for multiple watches when you’ve found the “one”! Love my Submariner 16610. It’s just the perfect blend between casual, and dressy, not too flashy, yet not totally understated. The watch that’ll go the distance in a Zombie Apocalypse. My one love and nothing else matters. Of course it’s always okay to “look and appreciate” others, but no other watch can part this puppy and his Sub 💪🏼

Fun video! I’d put myself in between One Watchbox and Three Watch Guy. I’m in the earlyish days of collecting, but I have a specific plan for my core collection. I envision the number being four to five pieces. The Explorer and the Sub I’ve been fortunate enough to acquire already. Next will likely be a dressy watch, perhaps Grand Seiko or IWC. Then most likely will come the Datejust. Beyond that I’m not sure, but a man’s gotta own a Speedy right?

Became a one watch guy recently. Picked up an Omega Seamaster (2014) in a ‘Black Friday’ sale on ‘Watch Finder’ for an absolute steal. Being lusting for a Seamaster since watching Casino Royale! Feeling fulfilled and love the piece....however, that speedmaster would look great on my wrist at some point haha

I think you missed one. The iconic collector. Although you named some traits in each of the category. But I understand that this was a "broad generalization." So the iconic collector only collects 1 or 2... from each brand. This depends on how many iconic watches come from the same brand. Example is a Cartier-Tank, Santos and Crash...
I am one of those collectors. I have over 80 watches. Everything from AP to Zelos....🤣 A very good video. Too bad I did not catch this when it was first released. Way to go Oisín!

I used to be the "one watch guy" when i had my Rolex Explorer 1016. Got rid of a handful of Casio digitals when i purchased the Rolex. Then about 10 years after I picked up a Mid-size Omega M300 (black dial, NOT the Brosnan Bond model) in the Caribbean on a cruise. Haven't looked back since. Good vid. Keep at it.

Interesting! I guess I fall into the "One watch box" category: 10 and counting ... (Oris, JLC, IWC, Chronoswiss, Fortis, Nomos, Sinn, Zelos, Yema, Direnzo). I am trying to have as much variety as possible in my small collection, in terms of country of origin, brand, style, functions, etc. Next on my wish list are Christopher Ward, Glashütte Original and Omega. As I want to focus on quality rather than quantity and not go much beyond 10 (or maybe a dozen) watches, rather than being a "Flipper" I have begun to give some of them away to my loved ones (Oris - son, Nomos - wife, IWC - father). Cheers!

I probs fall into one watch guy. Maybe 3 watch guy but not got money for others and the speedmaster professional is just so damn nice.
If I would say 3 and I had the spare money it would be my speedmaster, I would buy a daytona and eventually be given my Dad's Rolex GMT Master which was his Dad's watch. Other than this, no need for other watches.

I have AP, Patek, Rolex, Seiko, Casio, Omega...Previously, Rolex and Seiko are the watch that I wear most, now it is the Omega that I wear most. Kind of stressful wearing an AP or Patek, you constantly thinking ...and dont want to scratch them. And people will look at you and some people notice it and start whispering to their peers and behave unnaturally... when you wear AP or Patek. And some crazy collector Archie have 5 Pateks in the collection.

It’s funny, I have a few watches with a few vintage Seiko from my teens spent in South East Asia, 1941 IWC B-Uhr 52 S.C., 1930ies civilian pilot watch branded Brooks but movement is from Helbros another brand from Switzerland, Swatches, 1985 Cartier Santos, two Hamilton, two IWC Doppelchronograph, JLC Memovox Tribute to Polaris 1968, Omega Seamaster NTTD… but I often travel with two watches which I wear in alternance… I have been dreaming to be a one watch man for some years now as it is the most interesting signature but I would never part with any of my watches and at times I am drawn into some pieces in a compulsive but always thoughtful way as I shall not resist their appeal…
What I am looking for in watches: design purity, materials, calibres, technical / nerd / geek factor…

  • @AvroBellow

I'm a bit different when it comes to collecting watches than any of the examples you gave. I collect watches but I have certain criteria that might be unique to me (but I doubt it):
#1 - My watches MUST be on bracelets.
#2 - My watches MUST be automatics.
#3 - My watches MUST be between 43 and 48 millmetres in diameter.
#4 - Brands don't matter much to me, spec, value, personality/character and beauty rule.
    My reasoning:
#1 - I find bracelets to be more comfortable and they last forever.
#2 - I don't want to always have to wind it and watching a quartz movement is torturous.
#3 - I have broad and flat platform-like wrists. A 40mm bracelet watch looks ridiculously small on me which is funny because I'm only about average height.
#4 - I get my pride from knowing that my Seastar 2000 out-specs EVERYTHING below a Planet Ocean which costs over SIX TIMES the price. I also get that pride by looking at it and knowing that only someone who really knows watches could appreciate the specs in the first place and that knowledgeable person is me. I'd still buy a Rolex if I could find one that wasn't insanely-priced because those end up being less than free if you're willing to sell.
    My two exceptions:
#1 - My dress watch is some Aliexpress job that looks like a cross between a Patek Perpetual Calendar and a Lange 1815 Tourbillon. Like all really dressy watches, it has a white textured dial with rose gold accents and a crocodile-finish brown leather strap. It's an exception because I almost never wear it but it looks incredible with a suit and tie.
#2 - My Movado SE 0604702 actually breaks rules 2 and 3 for me but I make the exception because:
    a) It was my first grail and is devoid of both a second hand and an audible quartz tick.
    b) Even though the dial is a tiny 36.5mm, the integrated bracelet means that it still looks good on my broad and flat wrists
My current collection consists of the aforementioned Movado SE, a Tissot Seastar 2000, an Invicta Grand Diver (kind of like a Planet Ocean), a Pagani PD-1639 (Submariner Clomage), a Seiko Lord Open-Heart, a Paula Reis Prestige (Planet Ocean Clomage), a Bulova Lunar Pilot and a Lige Belmont (my dress watch).
As long as a watch meets my 4 criteria, the only limit to how many I own is based on what I have to to spend at the time.
I DARE you to classify me! MUAHAHAHA!

I don't have anything special -- Omega Seamaster (3), Omega Planet Ocean Chronograph, a stainless & gold Omega Constellation, a couple of Tag Heuer chronographs, assorted Oris divers, a Tissot chronograph, Seiko divers, etc. I even have a couple of the controversial plastic G-Shock watches that I use as rugged beaters when camping, working in the yard, etc. One of my latest additions has been a Garmin Fenix fitness watch, which I use when bicycling or day-hiking. I'll probably stick with my current inventory for the next few years while I turn my attention to other collectibles. (Don't even get me started on my 100+ fountain pens!)

But it’s into certain models only (not always the flagships), that for instance a particular brand in the 40s, 50s, & 60s made for multinational military aviators, divers, car racers, spec ops units back in Vietnam, for instance.

How about a part two watch collector types...
The brand loyalist (Panaristi Speedy Tuesday, Seiko guys).
The movement purist (Quartz vs Mechanical, vs Automatic vs complications)
    The vintage collector
The fanboy (May or may not own their brand grail but they know that particular brand)
The “investment” collector (the new guys who buy based on aftermarket value speculation)
The mod collector (guys who modify and customize watches)
The affordable or mid tier collectors (Ch Wards, Ball, homage brands)

I always had a wristwatch, but I do not remember what I had as a teenager during the 1970s. In early 1983 I bought a quartz, cheap Citizen, wore it 'till it completely fell apart in 2012. So wore that for almost thirty years. I didn't know watches. I had another cheap Citizen for two years, and in 2014 caught the bug. I bought several watches, but I now only have two Rolex, sold, gifted or traded all the rest. I seriously have no intent to buy any more watches. Two and done. I do not collect. If I ever get an idea or chance to buy again I'll get an AP either a 15400 or better yet a 15500.

Me I am a poor watch collector, I crave quality and desirability, but at an affordable price, Orient Mako 2, Citizen Nighthawk ,Seiko digital tuna, Pagani Homages or even a parnis homage. I am looking for value with character, a watch that is within my means but still not cheap as in looking cheap. If my situation changes I might go a bit more upmarket, a Steinhart or a low end Oris even a reasonably priced Glycene. I wouldn' be seen dead with an actual Rolex, Panerai or god forbid A.Lange & Sohne, but i might consider a homage of one of them IF it was obviously a homage, I'm not into replica's. If I was suddenly flush with money, I might consider an Ohmega Seamaster but only if it was less than £1000 and even then I would feel that I was being a bit pretentious and would only wear it for special occasions like Birthdays or Christmas. When there are homeless people on the streets or people in 3rd world countries living on less than a Dollar a day, I can't see how people can walk about with 10's of thousands of £'s worth of watch on their wrist with a clear conscious.

I probably nudge the Nerd category too however as today I'm wearing a 'gold' Casio WR and have a bunch of cheaper watches including 10 dollar HMT's as well as vintage Zenith, Omega, JLC, Longines etc.

You know, I've been thinking about this: A "One Watch Guy" can't be considered a collector. He's just a guy that always wears one particular watch. I would postulate that a One Watch Guy has got his watch as is not interested in the experience of collecting. One Watch guy is your uncle, grandfather, older gentleman who was handed a watch by his father or his wife, or his girlfriend. His is not a collector. A collection is plural. It is not singular. Collectors, collect - they amass pieces for a collection. It becomes their hobby. On Watch Guy is not a hobbyist. He is off doing other stuff, not obsessing over amassing a collection, not watching watch videos. He is probably more concerned about other aspects of his life - like his property, car(s), etc.

For most individuals (outside the watch trade) who can genuinely afford a collection of multiple high-horology watches, the concepts of 'everyday' and 'tool' watches is surely outside their normal experience. I would have thought they'd therefore need only one 'dress' and one 'sports' watch (i.e., two watches). Is this, in fact, true (i.e., do most high net-worth individuals own only a very few watches and reserve the bulk of their 'disposable' income for other things)? I'd suggest that very few genuine horologists can actually afford a broad selection of watches that matches their true 'academic/horological' interest, as opposed to those who buy and wear watches merely as status symbols.

If you’re the in the 8th category of watch collector - the lottery winner who fancies instantly buying all of Rolex’s hot steel sports models in one hit just to kill the boredom - now is your chance. The used market is currently so flooded with flippers offloading stock that I’ve now seen the holy grail, yes the ceramic steel Daytona with white dial, behind glass on the high street together with the new Pepsi, a couple of cheeky Kermits and a Hulk. All of this in a Midlands city in the U.K. outside of ‘The Garden’. Prices still sky high but the casual lottery winner in Cat-8 could collect the lot like old football World Cup stickers.
