  • This extract is part of the documentary: Countdown for the Parco della Musica. Beginning in 1999, I followed the month-to-month construction of the Parco della Musica in Rome, the largest artistic complex in Europe. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, it consists of three concert halls, an outdoor auditorium with 3,000 seats, an immense hanging garden, an archeological site with the ruins of a Roman villa unearthed during the excavations, and a vast parking lot. The optimum natural acoustics of the complex required delicate and meticulous work on the part of numerous experts. It was the architect Renzo Piano who chose the materials, the construction team of some 1,200 people-workers, technicians, architects, engineers and craftsmen specializing in wood and iron-in addition to conceiving the idea of transposing the architectural structure of music into the space itself. The main protagonists comment on the diverse stages of the project, and express their joy at having been part of such a great undertaking.
