The Wesleyan Quadrilateral, Chick Yuill, and Included

  • The Wesleyan Quadrilateral is a misunderstood tool in theology. Several people sent a video my way from the Included Conference (a virtual event) and encouraged me to respond. In that video, a well-known speaker in Salvation Army circles describes his theological evolution to embrace a progressive understanding of human sexuality (find the link below). The speaker, Chick Yuill, in the 1980s, wrote clear catechesis material on this topic and now “washes his hands” of what he wrote then.
This message got my attention. What troubled me most in this presentation was the way he employed the Wesleyan Quadrilateral in his argument. This podcast represents my general response to that presentation. You can find links to this new podcast here:

"faithful to whom?" . . . an essential and critical distinction.

Thank for your helpful clarification of Sola scriptura and The Salvation Army's first article of faith.

Thanks, Dick! While you and I were flying to Israel I was reading a book by Dr. Kevin Vanhoozer. He was the one who help me grasp the connection between our article fo faith and sola scirptura. Here's a link - www.amazon.com/Biblical-Authority-after-Babel-Christianity/dp/1587433931

Chick, I think, would welcome a thoughtful discussion on his views. I hope that can happen.

I spoke with the leaders of Included. They informed me that they have received no contact from you and their official inbox is quite empty. I also reached out to Chick today, who graciously informed me that he would be watching this video with interest.

Well, I did reach out to the email address on their site. I did this about a month before I reached out the Progressive Salvationist FB group. I had a good talk with Chick today. We are setting up a conversation.

It's not quite accurate to suggest that Yuill's change of view is that of "Scripture loses 3-1" when looking at the issue of sexuality through the lense of the Wesleyan Quadrilateral. Although I entirely disagree with Yuill, and believe he has misread Scripture, he has come to his present views because experience and reason lead him to re-read (and, I repeat, in my view: misread Scripture).

You and I come out to the same place here, but we keep getting tied up at this point. I am coming to the UK in June, perhaps we could have a coffee then. I appreciate you, David, and the helpful way you engage me here.

So by your logic, since Joshua was recorded as commanding the Sun to stand still, this trumps reason and experience. Inerrancy is the downfall of Evangelical theology.

I believe the Triune God created the universe out of nothing, I believe that Jesus rose from the dead, I believe his physical body is exalted at this very moment, and I believe the Holy Spirit is with us guiding my life today. It's not an extreme jump for me to believe that the Sun could standstill. Nevertheless, in that specific scenario, I have room for other interpretations. Thanks again for engaging me here, Tim.

@@andymilleriii, if you can have room for other interpretations about the Sun standing still, which is a natural law I don’t believe God ever broke, then I have room for other interpretations regarding LGBT inclusion.
