Watched with tears in my eyes. My Grandfather and uncle were killed in the 1955 flood. Thank you so much for all of your hard work. Jill (Blackburn) Jackson

Janice White says: "What an honor to use one of our recordings to help tell this story. It is another way for me to hold on to Jayne. (The song, by the way, was actually written by Rick Giles and Susan Longacre).
Such a tragedy in '55; so many people lost so much. I remember at Franklin School, our 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Stromer, shared the story of her and her 2-year-old son clinging to a tree waiting several hours to be rescued. When she was done, you could hear a pin drop in that classroom.

I would like to know if anyone remembers a flood in Marysville and Linda around 1961-63. I was living in Linda with my family, and I was 6 or seven. I remember going over the bridge in Marysville, and then the one in Yuba City and watching the water rise as we were going over both the bridges. We were on our way to stay with my great grandma in Live Oak because her house was raised and wouldn't flood. I believe that the Oroville Dam might have already been underway. I know that my dad was going to Yuba College, and that he started working on the construction of Oroville Dam a bit before the flood, or just afterwards. I would like to know more about that time. I remember that our house flooded up half way up the walls of our house and that we had flood insurance, and we got enough money to make the repairs we needed to get back into our home, if anyone has information on the flood during this time 1961-63 please let me know, I have been searching and can not find much...

Sure does bring back the memories....lived pretty far out at Lincoln & Township Rds, so water was moving slowly by then, couple feet deep, coming down Lincoln Rd, as Mom in the car and me on my horse were leaving heading West, eventually to end up at my Grandpa Ziegenmeyer's house in Sutter. We had been in our new house for one year, and were lucky. It was on a high foundation and only got water just up under the floors. Water waist deep in barns and shop areas. What a mess!!

My wife Marty was in the fourth grade living near Gridley, Ca about 25 miles above Yuba when the heavy rains and floods came washing out her bridge about 3/4 of a mile away. That winter she and other school children had to walk and cross a large stream with only a plank under their feet while holding on to a rope. On the other side of the stream a school bus waited for them.

We were so lucky. In the U.S.Navy at that time stationed in Alameda, came home to Marysville to pick up parents to go to Southern CA to spend Christmas with family. Family dog was taken by neighbors to the radio station in Yuba City . We heard about the flood on the radio while in Long Beach. Found out it was our dog when we returned. We had a one-yr-old daughter at that time and were grateful to be in a safe place for Christmas, but lost friends in the flood. Sad time.

Thanks for the reply and the memory. Hope more will post, especially if they have a story from any of the floods.

We got flooded in Colusa in the mid '80s, then again when we moved into YC, out towards Sutter (we used to own the property where Helena chemicals is). Then we moved to Messick Rd in '97 or '98 and got flooded there again when the levees broke! Haha, but I loved growing up there. It's grown so much since we moved away.

If you live in YC area and have Comcast, watch Channel 19 M-F 7 a.m., 9:30 a.m., noon, 4 p.m., or 9 p.m. for documentary on the 1955 flood.

I don't know of anything online. I would start at the Yuba County library. I am not aware of anyone putting a video together, although it would be a good idea.

I remember this flood from when I was 6 yrs old- we were glued to the news as grandpa's brother had a dairy east of Marysville, just a little to the north & they were sandbagging the levees day night there trying to hold them. I believe the Marysville levee was saved by only a couple of inches. Folsom Dam had just been completed & 'they' said it would take 2 years to fill it. It filled up in the 8 days straight of heavy rain with the storm that did this.
