Mr. Aleister Grimstone, mortician extraordinaire at your service. 100% origional character with backstory they usually put me in sections where there is more dialogue because I'm better at improv.
I made an incarnation of Mr. Hyde for an upcoming haunt nearby. Smooth-talker, always calm even when enraged. In this version, Dr. Jekyll has lost his remaining sanity and Hyde took over completely. I'm applying to be a walkaround character at the event, not actually in the haunted attractions themselves.
I’ve been struggling with my character so I’ll definitely use this! I want to challenge myself this year by being more then a jump scare. I struggle with dialogue and the shape of my room makes it difficult to hide in. Thank you for the tips!!
Vixa I’m glad you’re able to find this video helpful! Speaking from personal experience, I’ve also had trouble with dialogue. This year, however, I really used these tips to fully immerse myself in the character, and the dialogue just flows naturally! Of course there are still flubs here and there when someone throws a curveball at you, but then you think of responses to those curveballs for the next person who throws the same one.
I'm struggling the opposite- I'm more psychological scares, but the haunt I'm in measures success by how badly you make people jump. The "top performers" are whoever makes the most people fall over
my fav char was an on the spot improv my home haunt has no script or story line just tossed me at the largest area with 5 kids I created willard the wizard as patrons were coming right at me
I'm having some issues with my character for this upcoming season. I already have a name, backstory, personality and appearance for him but I don't know how I can make him scary as his personality is just "drunk sailor"
Hey there! I’ve done my fair share of time on our pirate ship, and I’ve noticed our best scares come from great timing. Some of our pirates say the most ridiculous things or even... “drunken” gibberish... BUT the scares come from perfectly timed execution! Especially if you’re in a more quiet area, you can get a scare just from having a loud voice. We have a fish monger position, and one of my favorite scares that they would get is when a group would round the corner and everything is quiet, then all of a sudden he’d jump up from behind the counter, slam a fish down on it, and yell “FISH!”- something as simple as that would knock a whole group to the ground. The way I’d scare personally (pre-pandemic), was to just get so uncomfortably close to the patrons. I was friendly as can be, but taking away their personal space was enough to make them scurry out of my scene. And don’t forget to utilize your space! Jump out from places where they’re less likely to expect you! Hope any of this helps ❤️
@@Beyond13thGate in the time between my initial comment and your reply I decided that I would rather just create my own character and scare patrons on the midway (The haunt I work at is at the local fairgrounds). My new character is an insane serial killer clown. I based this decision on the fact that I have more experience with this type of role and thus it would be easier for me to perform. That being said I appreciate your advice all the same, and I will agree that timing and voice volume are absolutely vital for good scares.
I have an original character who doesn't have a name yet and there is this haunt I really wanna do that's all year round and I'm gonna get this broken doll mask.
Great video and very helpful tips. I have always loved haunted houses and ever since I first visited one years back, I’ve always wanted to work in one. Most require the person to be at least 18 to be able to work there. I turned 18 a few months ago so I’m definitely thinking about signing up for auditions when the time comes. I’m really excited because this is something I’ve always wanted to do, but I can’t help but be a little nervous. Any auditioning tips? If it helps, I’ve always been an introvert and get embarrassed easily, so this will be a big step to get past.
We currently have a video our stage manager talking about what they are looking for in auditions. It’s located in the Haunt Acting Tips playlist if you’d like to check it out! We also hope on doing a more in depth auditions video in the future. If you’re going in as a character- make sure you are fully your character! And if you’re going in as yourself- be yourself completely! They are looking to be entertained and to see what you have to offer. I am also a super shy introvert, and I know it can be difficult, but remember- no one is rooting against you so don’t let nerves hold you back! You’ve got this ❤️
I have always been an introvert too! I would suggest getting your mask or makeup dialed and wear it to audition putting that mask on will turn you into a different person. Give you confidence. Don't break character and you will be great!
If you don’t like “want to play” when you are a creepy doll character what would you suggest? I want a hug just seems weird too me and not scary but it’s the only other response I can think of please help.
Channel your inner child! You can play games without asking- were you playing hide and seek and you found them? Maybe they’d make a nice addition to your collection. Perhaps they’re being too loud and that upsets you. Get creative with it!
My very first year when I was only 12 years old I saw my friend and her step sister and I just said "Oh! Hey (Fake name) Kayleigh! How are you?" Ugh... It was my second night acting. I was not smart-
I got put in the hillbilly room in my haunt. I'm from the northeast USA and have never been to the deep south. I'm also not allowed to touch anything on my front porch set and hate my character. Any advice for someone who hates her character and isn't allowed to do anything else unless the managers approve it?
Observer TribeTwelve Hey there! Since every haunt operates differently, we don’t know how to properly advise you here. What we will suggest though is to keep trying new things in your spot and keep working on your character. You never know when something is going to work for you and end up being a great bit. Sometimes it takes a different approach than how that spots been played in the past. Keep looking for new angles. If you’ve really been trying to make it work for you and it still just isn’t, try talking to your management and see if there’s another spot they may be able to put you in. We’ve all been there. Some spots just don’t click. Please don’t give up though!
Not sure if you're still playing that character at this point but my aunt and uncle play the hillbillies at the haunt I work at. One thing they do that normally tends to get a few scares is say something like this, "We're having possum stew for supper if ya wanna stay fer a while! We could always use a little more meat and flavor!"
Do you have an original character? Tell us about them here!

The World of Grimstone I love that!
Giggles, chainsaw clown, tons of energy
Lorraine, applegate asylum resident, bipolar and schizophrenic

Beyond 13th Gate -Definitely! 🖤

Definitely gonna use this to help the new actors in my haunt.
Awesome! We love being able to reach more haunts than just our own ❤️ Thanks for the support!
Let the voices in your head take over and leave your voice at the door
Agreed, don't hold back! Especially if your a mental character it will only add to the effect!

Sailors can be creepy you can be a ghostly pirate type :)
@@kookycoconut interesting idea but it wouldn't fit the theme as we're going for more of a Lovecraftian late 19th century/early 20th century vibe.

Thank you so much! It's a fun industry to be in!
awesome!! helpful
How about acting... with a mask... with a chainsaw?
