Haunt Acting: Developing Your Character
Next month this scare house is auditioning. Been wanting to work as an actor for a long while now. These videos are making me feel way less anxious! Thank you!
my fav char was an on the spot improv my home haunt has no script or story line just tossed me at the largest area with 5 kids I created willard the wizard as patrons were coming right at me
Freezing in the dim light and waiting until customers come closer . . . Tentatively . . . Wondering whether or not I’m a mannequin . . . Winds up getting the most surprisingly powerful scares of the night. Sometimes I get the cherished cue, “is he real?” Oh boy, do I enjoy ANSWERING that question. Stillness can be so powerful . . . And wow, yes, eyes can really convey a LOT. I was really surprised how much my undergraduate primate studies classes were useful for anticipating what would induce really deep-seated scares.
This is a really helpful tip video! I've watched it more than a couple times and it has helped me a lot through my first season of haunting!!! Can you do something about chainsaw actors? It might seem weird, but i'm getting stuck at what to do if they don't care about the chainsaw :(, or like, they're just "over it" and i need to act my butt off to try and at least make it fun for the rest of the long hallway. What's scarier or maybe what's a way to make it more fun for them and me once the chainsaw effect is gone?
Dance!
This is where i struggle its hard to make each character feel different
I’m watching these specifically for Halloween cause we always do a haunted house out front!! Thank you so much!!
Hey it’s my first time acting, how do I get good scares with a boring skeleton mask on?
I work at the trail of fear in Oklahoma and we open tomorrow I needed extra tips thank you😂😂
Frankie is truly inspirational!
How about acting... with a mask... with a chainsaw?
At the haunted house I act at, I work by a indoor maze area right next to an out door area with a fence. And the being in control of the environment really is true with the maze. Its a pretty small maze and its possible to get people completely lost in the maze
First time scare actor here. Any advice or tips specifically regarding playing a plague doctor would be super helpful since that’s the role I have been assigned in the haunt.
I would suggest doing your research on plague doctors. Enough, at least, to help you get into the mindset of how to behave like one. Then figure out who YOUR plague doctor is. Who are you, why are you there, and what is your purpose? The more real you make your character feel, the more real they are to the audience, even if they only see you for a few moments. Haunt acting is not JUST about the jump scare, it's about helping create the atmosphere you're placed in so that the audience are further effected by it. Here's an idea that just dawned on me: You, as a plague doctor, don't necessarily WANT to be near people. They're more than likely diseased and you only have so much on your person to protect you. Instead of reaching out or lunging, try the opposite. Find a dramatic or sudden way to recoil in fear or shock of people being too close to you. Any quick motion in a dark, small space, while their senses are jumbled, will most likely reward you a jump scare. Even if it's something non threatening. Been working a local haunt since I was a teen, and I grew up going to HHN, as well as working it for a couple seasons. Hope this all helps. Break a leg. Most importantly: HAVE FUN.
I dunno. A 'Cajun' Swamp Zombie *might* (depending on the theme/mood of your Haunt) say, "Brraaiinnss...!" with a Bayou Drawl.
Our opening night was last night, and the new room I was in had NOTHING to hide behind, so I came up with the mannequin to live tactic all by myself. This is very 👍 good!
Really appreciate this channel. I just got accepted to be involved with a very reputable studio. All this stuff is gold. Thank you!
I’ve never acted before and auditions are this week I’m so scared 😭
I hope they went well for you! ✨ My first audition is coming up so I feel you on the nerves 😭
How did it go????? What was it like I HAVE AUDITIONS SOOONNN HELP
@@DaisyDuck0 I just got my email today and I’m in! I basically got to the audition, signed in, they took a “mugshot” picture of me, and then I waited my turn to go in front of the haunts casting managers where they asked some questions. Then I was asked for my best impression of a mutant lol I hope your audition goes great! (Sorry I know the reply wasn’t to me 😭)
@@Viv165 THANK YOU, I'm so nervous
@@DaisyDuck0 Come back with an update if you remember to, you’ve got this!
I'm 62 and I've been a haunt actor since the age of 15. What's always worked best for me is maintaining eye contact with the customer when they're in your scene. Also, try your best to give off an air of "you are SO screwed" without actually saying so.
I want to play a monster in a haunted house so bad!!! I live in New Jersey. I'm trying to get a job in Six Flags but I never receive a return call.
I do not get interviewed. I interview you the company All scare actors need to do this A company has to prioritize actor safety . Patron safety Again I do not audition If a haunt cannot meet security expectations then thelat show is not worthy of your attention
I've never subscribed to the 'if you can't get the scare, get the laugh' strategy. Customers go to a haunt to get scared, not to see a comedy show. And most people just aren't funny. They think they're being funny but it's usually just cringeworthy. Unfortunately, most scare actors are terrible and have no idea what they're doing. Most either just smile and laugh, scream in your face, or just stand there like they're not sure why they're even there.
First time acting in a haunt this year. 😊
Same 😂
Me too!!
Im a young teen and cant do much things for scare acting. But its my favorite thing to do. So on friday I am gonna be doing the closest thing I can do to scare acting. I am volunteering at a halloween event for a thing im in!
I can dislocate my left shoulder on command and create indents in my fingers.
Great job. Im trying to develop a new voice for my haunt. In the past its always been a high pitch screech. Time for something new.
Thank you for these videos, I'm auditioning for a haunted house soon, and which is also gonna be my first time trying to get a job. I have anxiety but the videos by y'all have been so incredibly helpful! <3
Sometimes the best scare is the littlest movement ;)
Very nicely done, very good job
we would love your feedback on our video about haunt acting
I used to be a haunt actor. I did it for four years and I enjoyed it. But I can honestly say that I wasn't good at it. In fact, I was quite terrible at it. Barely got any scares, and the guests just weren't entertained by me. The best thing I can say about my time as a haunt actor was that I was a hard worker. I did my best, even if it wasn't good enough for the haunts.
I feel ya on this. I kept reminding myself that you cant scare everyone.
very informative! been looking at getting better at horror acting
I have been a haunt actor since 2013, it's always good to get more tips. Thanks for this video!
this is my first time being a part of a haunt and these videos have been so helpful in being mindful of how to use my body and different techniques, so i just ant to say thank you! im nomrally quite anxious and closed off so this is my way of trying to open up and put myself out there. ive gotten the role of a creepy doll, and was wondering if anyone had any catchphrases or things that would be great to say in the few moments i may talk to someone
A year later, but here are some that might work: “Will you play with me?” “Why won’t you play with me?” “I saw what you did.” “I know what you did.” “Play with me.” *laugh/giggle at the target whilst staring at them emotionlessly* *walk around the target making them uncomfortable, then make sudden moves or twitches or small sounds* *possible distress sounds (crying, whimpering, etc.)* If the person accepts playing, act glad, yet creepy still, and try something like asking favorite things like food or animals or activities, and your answer could be stalking my victims/friends/enemies, whatever you like :) Good luck, and happy haunting! - random 12-14 year old lol
i used this advice this past weekend! i’m in a scare zone rather than a house, so i can get pretty close. when i can get behind someone and start following them, rather than scream in their ear, i start doing a quiet strained breathing in their ear so it takes them a second to realize what they’re hearing (i’m a zombie so it’s a lot of throat noises i’m focusing on) the reactions are usually better than just making a loud noise!
You just have to ignore the trolls. Their reaction says you're already doing a good job and they won't remember you on a personal level like that. They will only remember if you entertained them well
Thank you for the review, I will be working in a haunted house this year, and my voice isn't very loud, and I don't have much of a scream, and this video was extremely helpful. I will be looking forward to more advice from you! Thanks!
She is so good holy hell
Very cool
I'm gonna be at my local Halloween Run as Scare actor Ghostface from the 2022 movie so these tips are pretty good.
I go as ghostface at a hauntned hayride every year, I always hide some where then runn at the trrailr then jump on it at the last second when the sectionn is about to end
I’m writing a book about Scare Acting. Is there a way to contact Drew Cothern?
Find his email. It may be in his description. Are u a scare actor youself?
Thats rly interesting
2 questions WHY DO THE WORKERS HAVE AN ATTITUDE? 😐 , Also why did they target me and say “get the girl with the grey sweatshirt “ was it bc i was terrified?also if at 13th gate they got to close to me so ima swing on u
Normally if you’re the most scared out of your group, actors tend to target those who are the most scared cause that’s just personal fun and something they’d want to brag about. The attitude? I don’t know why attitude would be a thing unless someone was being mean, they were having a bad day, etc. Whatever the situation, normally the actors shouldn’t have an attitude to customers, no matter the reason. (There are some exceptions)
So when you go into a haunt, You are told the rules. If they get "too close to you" It's their Job. Go ahead and swing at an actor and watch them pull you out of the group and ban you from the haunt while your friends have fun without you. You go there expecting to be scared, entertained, talked to, nagged at. If you aren't scared an actor will move on to someone else or try to entertain you by making jokes or non racist but potentially mean comments. It's not personal, They've already forgotten you by the time you leave the room. Unless their character has an attitude (grumpy undead lunch lady for example) Then yeah, They are gonna sound rude because it's part of their job. Haunt actors are not just trying to scare people. They. Are. ACTORS.

Hello there from a haunted attraction called ScaryTrain. May I ask if you have a business email I can get in contact with?
It feels awesome to be targeted by a haunt actor!!
I've been watching all your videos and learned so much through them. Since last september i've been running as a scare-actor in the weekend within multiple professional productions. It truly is the best job ever and it gives me so much energy. Thank you for all the information, insight and health tips. Beyond 13th gate surely made me a better scare actor. Much love from the Netherlands!
Hello 13:th team, thanks for another good video. Love your stuff. Could you please do a video on self-care for scare actors? I work in a different haunted house and one thing me and some of my coworkers struggle with is the intense emotional ups and downs. I get huge adrenaline kicks whenever I'm on a scene, and the day after all those hormones drop through the floow into the absolute basement and I get as depressed as I was worked up. How do you guys manage yourself on this job? Thanks for your thoughts.
Great idea!
I know this comment is way later than when this was posted but I just want to say thank you so much for making these videos! I performed in my first haunt a couple days ago and the week leading up to it I watched a bunch of your videos for advice. It helped me flesh out my character a lot as well as prevent as many injuries, especially because I have a very active role and really need to pace myself to be able to continue with that level of energy throughout the night
Comments like these mean the world ❤️ Thanks for watching!
i went down to comment, oh so basically chop top but everyone beat me to it lmao
Omg I’m getting ready for this haunt season and I went to comment “oh shit so basically choptop” just to find out I commented that a year ago 😂
as an haunt actor this was extremely helpful- actor from evil on Erie in indiana 😊
I'm thinking about going to the 13th gate.
seriously considering it aswell i wanna go with my boyfriend but i HATE horror stuff
