86 is definitely more than a mech anime.
It's a story of war, PTSD, loss of a childhood, how humans can be cruel to one another based on hair color/eyes and, most importantly, love and healing.
Shin and Lena are probably the most thought out, developed and real lovers I have ever seen in any film or show.
You just described every Gundam show. I love 86 and it's unique take on mechs, but its themes are pretty standard for a mech anime. xD
Don't forget one thing: HOPE. In spite of the pain it dragged us through, it reminded us that hope is the greatest thing.
When I first saw Ernst I thought he would be a bad guy but like... He is so lovable and the perfect adoptive father

This is literally the first emotional, sincere and relaxed smile from Shin.
It's incredible how this anime/manga/novel is so underlooked and underrated out of Japan. This was easily the best anime in 2021 and honestly, even in 2024 still one of the best.

I know that in the original LN it was explained that the speakers for both of them were badly damaged, so they really didn't sound like "themselves". I like how in the anime, they made it so that Shin couldn't hear anything and that his machine had a lip-reading function translating her words for him.
My personal headcanon for how they didn't recognize each other's voices at first is that the ParaRAID works via transmitting what you _hear_ to the other person, and everyone hears their own voice differently than how others perceive it. This is because when you speak, producing the sound causes your whole skull to vibrate slightly which stimulates the inner ear and adding an extra layer to how you hear your own voice.

I really believe 86 has one of the best conclusions to a season ive ever seen for a show.
15:00 Sure, a handhold would've been cute, but showing them tentatively reaching for each other and having the shadows of their hands form an "8" and a "6" before transitioning to the title card was absolute perfection.
Also, I doubt Kurena would've let them hold hands. If you look at the picture at 13:56, she made sure to stick her foot between them, like she's trying to keep them apart 😂

The end is so good. The song playing is called Lilas (Lena is looking at Shin). There is an English version as well.
Absolutely Perfect Episode, a straight masterpiece of animation that brings everyone on an emotional roller-coaster.
86 has one of the best anime adaptations of all time!
The whole episode brought clarity of how everything we've suffered on this journey has led to this moment. The callbacks, the reuse of the music, a glimpse through Fido's eyes... all of it. And when we find where we have been led to, a new song greets us, as old acquaintences meet each other anew for the first time. Best of all? This isn't the destination. It's simply a perfect moment, well earned, as we continue our journey forward, together.

86-EIGHTY-SIX was supposed to be an 1 volume story, this is how the story has ended in vol 1, ep 11-23 (first 19 mins) were from vol 2 and 3. 86-EIGHTY-SIX won Dengeki Novel Prize in 2016 and was serialized. There are 13 volumes out in Japan right now + 1 vol of 86 Alter (a collection of short stories). The story just entered the final arc, as for how long the arc will be no one knows. A-1 Pictures works now on many shows so they probably won't work on 86 for a few years from now, but some staff from the CG studio that worked on 86 said after the anime ended that they will want to work on more 86, especially since the future mech designs are mindblowing. BTW that CG Studio, Shirogumi, just won Best Visual Effects Oscar award for Godzilla Minus One.

My face was pretty bad too when I read that page in the LN ;-;
86 is my fav anime because of the different style compared to other. The realisation, first season depicted the cruelty of war and the pov of Lena and Shin. Second season, shin became much more than the "badass cold guy" and we actually saw a more human side and expressed his loneliness.
Moreover is the music which added so much weight to the moments.
I honestly can't think how they could have made 86 better than that.
If you want to see the level of detail and how much love there was in this anime. Plz react to the 3 videos of ctrlaltQQ talking about all the details and even with those i saw some details he missed like when Lena met Shin in eps 22, she reveal the field of flowers which is mentioned by Shin in the farewell letter, (to bring flowers to their final destination)

I love how much you pick up on throughout the story whether it's immediate info or something foreshadowed and answered later.
I see you're starting Haikyuu and that is another GOAT. Excited to watch that react series once you're deeper into it.

This anime is 10/10 perfection from ep 1 to finale!
Without doubt, one of the finest anime series made, right up there with Violet Evergarden, and one that even non-anime viewers enjoy - just a pity it seems to have had such limited distribution across different channels. 10/10.

I do reccomend the Light Novel after watching this.......
Some aspects to look into (LN)
1. Character Development is Insane
2. World Building is Incredible
3. Dynamics are awesome (MC and Side Characters)
4. Shin X Lena Dynamic Buildup is Insane as well ( Big Fan of their Dynamics)
5. Would Anyone be suprised if i tell u that there is going to be an epic Naval Battle, yes folks a naval battle ?!

The impact this must have had on Lena...she literally just said her good byes to them at the memorial composed of their Juggernauts...only to be reunited with them moments later!

There are 3 videos from ctrlaltQQ "86 Eighty Six - Reviewing Details You Missed From the Anime". These videos were amazing of explaining missed details and shows how much love anime A-1 artists put in this anime.
And if I am not mistaken Shin and his team only salute to Lena during the show.
I would be happy if A-1 continue to adapt 86, but at the same time scared of quality drop.

There are so much hidden meaning in the framing, the color use, purposely recycled animations that is just the cherry on top of the amazing story. I rewatched the last two eps so many times and i never get tired of them!
If you haven't already done it, A Silent Voice (movie) is every bit as much a tearjerker also.

4:00 I just realized what's pretty special about this scene. Shin has probably never had somebody who had a grave he could go to. Everyone else he knew that died was 86, and they weren't allow3d to bury their dead. Otherwise, his parents and brother died in battle when Shin was a widdle man. Eugene has a final resting place, where Shin can leave flowers.

One little detail I love in this episode if you compare the two Fido flashbacks, when the Federacy rebuilt him they upgraded his camera.
That moment where Shin turns around and there's suddenly all shepards and the legion gives me chills every time.
The name of the song when Lena meets the group is LiLaS. Lena is looking at Shin.

Just finished 86 and I loved the ending!! Too many anime take on an emotional roller coaster and leaves you stuck at the top of the ride.. lol 86 is a classic!!

You have Bunny Girl Senpai on your MAL with 0 episodes watched, if you haven't started it yet you might want to give it a try. It's VERY good and full of heart. Nokotan is hilarious, Konosuba is BUCK WILD if you want an anime version of It's Always Sunny, Mashle is a lot of fun if you want a silly take on Harry Potter.
I always recommend my favorite series, Haibane Renmei. It's quite old and forgotten nowadays, but it's a beautiful story that kinda feels a bit like Frieren (but at the same time, different).
Wait for the next season, hopefully it gonna come soon🥺

I felt the same way watching the ending, I'm sure all of us did, it's beautiful, man. You should definitely read the rest of the light novels starting from volume 4 if you can, the story only gets better and better.
I don't want spoilers but I just wanna know how much focus the other 86 members would get?? At least for (if) season 2 contents assuming we ever get them?? I mean the anime particularly focus on shin and lena a lot (which were great coz they both are goated char.) but I want more focus, I mean A LOT for the rest of the members. Theo especially is my fav.beside shin and lena but I love anju, kurena and raiden too of coz. I felt like they haven't gotten "real" focus since they joined the federacy

Now go read the light novels from Volume 4(Season 1 adapts the first 3 books)... just insane how amazing these characters are!

Perfect Ending, Beautiful story, direction, soundtrack, characters. Absolutely breathtaking anime and literally a hidden gem. 86.
We spend this whole show crying tears of pain just to cry tears of joy at the very end. Most perfect anime I've ever seen. I recommend Made in Abyss, Mushoku Tensei or Violet Evergarden next.
