They have the right to charge whatever they want. You have the right to walk away without buying anything. I’m glad you stood your ground and didn’t get anything. I don’t buy from shops that change prices at the register.
Yup, they have the right to up charge their dollar bin books to $5 and I have the right to decide not to buy anything. I still had a fun day hanging out with friends and that is the most important thing anyway.
And that business ethic is why they can't afford to stay there anymore... I have shady dealers do that stuff all the time.
Walked up to a guy at a toy show and he had one long box of comics. Nothing priced so I asked how much before even looking. He told me $1 a book. I pulled out a DC Comics Presents and two issues of Alf, and went to pay, he said that would be $15. I told him he told me $1 a book, he said he didn't. He said he was talking to "somone else" and not me when he said $1. Never mind there was no one else at his booth.
Wasted my time and I walked away leaving him holding the books. I run into that kind of dealer at almost every show I go to. Then they are back again the next year, with the exact same stuff they had a year before.
I thought the rule is as priced ! So if it says $1 then that’s what your meant to get charged !!! Bad business!!

I went to this warehouse last weekend as well. After an hour or so of making a stack to fill up a short box, I was told that their short box deal was only for books in the "Dollar aisle." They are such a mess. Then I picked out a small stack of dollar books. And the price guy actually said, "I'll be nice" and he quoted me the correct price for my dollar books. I was ready to walk out with nothing if he was gonna jack up the prices.
Oh man at least he let you buy the dollar books for the proper price. Its always ok to walk if you think the vendor is being unfair. Nothing wrong with that. Or buying just the ones you think are fair if they jack up prices etc.
Maybe a sad ending to the day, but I can tell you that you definitely captured The Spirit of the place on video! I felt like I was there!
Yeah my main goal was to try to get the full place on video and just give you the feeling what the place was like. I dont think I have seen a video that has done that before so I accomplished that. I still had fun with friends and got a fun video out of it and that alone made it a great day.

Yeah I am really confused as to why prices are still full look them up prices and not clear them out prices.
I hate to see a comic book store go out of business but that "dynamic" pricing on comics once you bring them up to the counter is one of the many reasons some comic book stores are going out of business. The ole bait and switch is not a good business practice.
Yeah, switching prices at check out is a big no no for me.

I know it shouldn't matter about who checks out who and they should honor the dollar bin prices however, You went on the wrong day Joe wasn't there he never looks up book prices and respects and trust where you tell him you got the books from. Lastly they have a weekly news letter that tells you the sales and deals of the week.
Yeah last time I was there I checked out with Joe and it was nice. This time it was not which is frustrating. I almost edited the end out but I realized if I don't give an honest experience, then other may go in not knowing what the experience may be like so you know what to expect.
I've seen a bunch of TH-cam videos about this place and they all end in the same way, they get to the register and the guy starts jacking with the prices. Everybody ends up walking away.
Yeah seems to be a common theme. I was trying to avoid that myself by hitting the dollar bin, oh well. Plenty of more comics out there.

That comic warehouse doesn't know how to sell comics and they will continue to be stuck with them for a long time.
I think they landlord wants them out very soon, so they will be leaving the building one way or another.
Also have used books red river books in the exchange district it’s the same look and feel as it’s beer around since 1974.

That's a real bummer (the pay experience at the end)...and the guy lost out on any sale from you because of the shady moves he tried to pull. I don't blame you at all for passing!
Yeah it was a really bummer, at the end I decided not to buy anything because of that. Oh well so much more comics in the city to dig through. That is why I like places that price out their comics or you know they will give you a deal etc. That way I know what I am getting into.
Fun show. You definitely have an encyclopedic knowledge base (who did what covers, writers, etc.) When I watch your video, I need to bring a snack. They are documentary length, 😆 But great to watch.
I always say those who think they know everything have nothing else to learn. I know a lot but always want to learn more, its impossible to have all knowledge.
I went there many years ago to purchase a few foreign comics. I found a some and when I went to check out. An employee looked at them, stepped back 5 feet away from me and examined them. He had to walk 5 feet away from to figure out the prices instead of determining them in front of me!? WTF!!! I agreed to the prices, paid and walked out. Even my wife, who was with me, thought that his conduct was weird.
Yeah I think they just look everything up or that was the way they operated for years. Makes it a bit frustrating. Tried to avoid that unsuccessfully by only digging the dollar bin.

That is for sure, they are all on their last legs.
If this guy wanted to pay his rent, he should be letting people pay by the pound to help liquidate his stock. Otherwise it's just a dusty personal collection he's trying to make a few dollars on.
Yeah if it was me I would start with a fill a long box sale, maybe $1000 each the first few days so the most expensive stuff gets some of the money. Then drop to $500, $300, $1 each any book, $200 $100 etc until its all gone.
Glad you didn’t give them the sale. That’s a crooked way to do business and they should value their reputation more that the few bucks they would make to get one over on you. It’s happened me at comic shops too and that’s it then, they lose me as a customer forever.
Yeah the whole situation just made me not want to buy any comics, and that is pretty hard to do usually.

I decided to skip to the end, not because I wasn't excited to watch you dig... but because I could guess what was going to happen. That guy basically farms out his labor to anyone willing to dig, decides a high cost so you feel like you just worked for it and either buy it or pass, then puts everything good up on eBay when you pass. He's kinda scum.
They are gonna have to close very soon no matter what, I think they are just in denial a little. Should be blowing things out not nickel and diming. Either way the fun thing was hanging out with friends and I will do that any time I can.

Digging is always fun, I did have fun filming the place and digging. Its a bummer I ended up with nothing but its not the end of the world. Rather give my money to someone else.

That place is not even chaos it’s a void and worthless for me as a hunter. When you find something good and they charge what they want, you did their work for them. I would not waste my time. I don’t even think they have any gems in that huge place anymore, only drek. It’s the allure that gets people to go and always let down.
The knowing almost anything you buy that is worth buying is going to be looked up and most likely ebay listing prices is not appealing to me. If I want to pay full ebay prices I go to ebay and buy there. If I want to buy random appealing books by spending hours hunting at a place I want to find them for a good price.
Jimmy Hoffa, the Ring of Power and the Ark of the Covenant could all be hidden in this place and no one would ever be able to find them.

The gun that runs this place has long been an advisor for Overstreet. It's just business! That's how those guys have always viewed comic books.

I was very excited at the beginning of your vid seeing all these rows of boxes to dig through, but when I saw your comment pop ups later in the vid that the books were priced at $5 each from the $1 bins, I knew instantly it was the old bait and switch game. I’m glad you walked away, but happy you had a fun time hanging out with your fellow comjc hunting buddies!
Yeah bummer on the bait and switch pricing, but it was still a nice day with friends and that is most important.

I think they just have a ton of stuff and then sell a little bit of it each month at very high prices to keep going. Otherwise I have no idea.

Absolutely shocked that they wouldn't do whatever they could to sell that stuff. They have to move and I'm sure tons of those books have been there for years. I think the plan is to find a single buyer, but they want too much from what I heard. There are things of value there but not things that sell well at a high price so no one its gonna just buy the work it would take to make a profit on it.

Nothing is priced in the warehouse and I find that sometimes they price it at ebay asking price which can be a lot more then what the item does sell for etc. I was just not in the mood to do that dance, so I picked the $1 boxes since I at least knew what it would cost me. But even that failed since they decided about 10 of the books I pulled where $5 not $1. I think they are closing very soon so they should be blowing things out, not sticking to trying to get the max they can.
I was thinking about going to the warehouse before they closed. I knew they had a cat and the place was dusty, but just thinking about the cat peeing on all the books is cringe. I read a few stories about the warehouse, where he does the switcheroo on dollar books. Joseph Koch had an interview in Comics Journal about the store closing and it didn't seem like he was going out of the nostalgia business. Maybe that's why they aren't really trying to get rid of inventory. After watching this, I don't think it's worth spending the gas or even subway fare. Thanks for the review.
Yeah the swicheroo thing was garbage, I hate stuff like that. Plenty of other vendors selling comics for good prices I can buy from.

So great to see in the space but I feel your frustration. I hate digging through comics with no prices and then getting surprised when you get up to pay. It just makes the whole experience frustrating. I’m kind of surprised that they’re doing that at this stage to be honest, you’d think they just want to move shit outta there. When does it officially shut its doors??
Yeah I am actually really happy I was able to capture the space in 4k, just as a lasting memory of the place. And the price look up pricing etc is never fun for me, hence why I hit the dollar bin I thought that would be safe at least. Oh well there is so many better spots all over NYC to dig. I really thought they would be blowing stuff out. If it was me I would have a fill a long box for $500 or $1000 sale, then after selling a few $300 sale etc and keep doing that until its all cleared out. It feels like the reality of the situation is not hitting. I don't know when they officially shut but it sounds like it could be anytime now.
Place is a dump. I was there one time only. Got dust and asbestos all over me. Guy starts going on ebay and hitting me over the head. I was out. Just pissed i wasted my time.

I live in England and all the comic shops are like forbidden planet and travelling man !!!! But when I was a kid and I first got into comics there was a shop called time slip and it was just like this place !just piles and piles of old comics and memorabilia etc !!! I miss mom and pop comic shops like this place !!!

For years I felt like I missed out not going, I have been twice and I can say your not missing out much. Yes a lot of comics but the pricing is too chaotic for me to make it fun.

In this case all the dollar boxes are in the one Aisle, so I had grabbed 5 books that I knew would be $5-$10 and then the rest I just pulled comics and magazines out of the dollar bins.
Wow I guess they are too lazy to price the books correctly and would rather come up with a price at the register. Not my kind of place to buy. I do have to say that place was interesting and I enjoyed the content even though the day didn’t pan out for you.
Yeah buying here is always super stressful to me, I like to know what I am getting into before I start grabbing heaps of things to buy.

Ebay sold prices are probably most accurate, the my collection app from Hip comics is fast and easy to use, not 100% accurate but its a good starting point if you want to scan through a bunch of books you dont know to at least give you an idea which ones you should further research.

I think when rent was cheap it worked out fine, but that area of the city is getting hot so rents just skyrocketing.
i watched a video of verygary and pressable defects dig thru that same place a few years ago. they didnt leave with much either and said the clerk pulled up ebay for the prices. personally i wish you'd of dug thru more non dollar boxes. i bet that place is full of gems.

Yeah sometimes they do. But also all the people who were there digging from the Queens Comic Part group who went together as a field trip were awesome. It was a fun day digging with those folks even if the place itself was kind of miserable and buying was not fun.

Places with a ton of comics are really fun to dig through and hunt.
Oh I like my local shops Comic Station and Action City comics, both close to each other and i often walk to hunt some comics at both. Gotham Thrift has a massive dollar bin the restock often. If you can only go one place though I recommend the monthly Queens Comic Party events my friend Billy runs. I always find a ton of fun books at a great price there.

Looks like a structured landfill. You say it smells bad? And they overcharged you? Doesn't help that the place looks and feels like nightmare fuel. I know I'd pass.
There are plenty of other cool comic spots to visit in the city. This one will be gone soon though, I am sure it had better days in the past.
We have an antiques flea market at the forks in Winnipeg Canada and Shaun they have cgc books and 90 S dc comics are $15.00 each. Cgc books priced very high.

So Koch is closing down?, they should be selling comics by the weight and not by the title. Good luck to the owners when it comes to closing down because most of the books look like very low midgrade.
Yeah they announced they were in April but I think we are getting very close to when they actually are closing.
Sean, Thanks for this one!! Have mailed ordered from Koch back in the day from the HUGE Newspapers they used to put out... Once ordered a full set of the Kubert Tarzans from them ,and LOTS of other stuff!! Sure I'm not the onlly comics fans that wishes I was in on this hunt!! Cool, Cool, COOL!! With that Much, inventory of not crap books, but just random little treasures here and there you think they would be practically giving them away. But Hey 2 each his own, there's plenty of paper out there for sale.

Nice to see some British stuff for a change. Wow, 2000ad, z cars etc, some of the 60's uk annuals are worth good money. Also the marvel Comics priced for the uk market, some collectors won't take them but they're the same books, the price is the only variation!

Its a lot of interesting indi and weird things indeed. Not dollar bin though, a lot of that stuff has value. Its just not quick to sell Marvel Key issues.

I had fun with friends at least and filmed a cool video. I was not in the mood to negotiate prices on all the non dollar bin stuff so I thought I would have an easy time digging the dollar bin. But nope even that was kinda bad.
So jealous. Such a shame a place like this has to close down, but with the way they do business... it might not be that surprising. Comic shops need to price their stuff and not change their minds at checkout.

Yeah, I was super tired and exhausted in that environment. I am sure there are some folks who still just pay after that. I am ok walking away though, I rather give money to vendors I enjoy dealing with.

Sounds about right, I saw tons I wanted but was not ready to wait as they looked everything up for pricing etc.
What is he going to do with all those books if he gets kicked from the building? He would need another warehouse to store all that and any warehouse is likely going to end up costing a whole lot more than rent is now.
Actually not sure, It does not feel like they are clearing much out so not sure if they are trying to sell everything or just dragging it as long as they can afford to. I think they want to find a single buyer or its going to end up being all tossed out

Personally I would have paid the $60 for the books you wanted because they are worth more. If I had a store and you didn't want to buy after spending all that time looking I would be bothered. I look at things from both sides. You are a tough buyer at times
Its more the principle of it, I really don't like when places decide to charge more for books then what they have them priced etc. Yes the books are worth more, but I have access to so many more comics in the City that I rather just spend the cash elsewhere. I rather buy from shops and vendors that are pleasant to deal with. Nothing is priced in the warehouse and I don't like that, so I decided to just stick to the dollar bin so I did not have to worry about the price shock, negotiations later on when paying. But he still did it with me and that is something I kinda hate so I walked away from the purchase. As someone who does own a store I try my best to price everything in the shop so people know what to expect when paying. And even if there is a case where a price is lost etc, If I have to price something out I at least make sure its a pretty decent deal.
@pop-comics I understand. You are blessed and lucky to have access to so many places that have comics. At one time, I had 30,000 comics ranging from golden age to bronze age and had many key issues. But sadly i regret selling them all. But I've been rebuilding a collection again and have about 500 which are mostly silver age.
The owner wants to get buried with all that stuff.

There has to be over 2 million items there and if they advertised $1 each blow out sale they would easily make a million before they have to move the rest to another location. 😅

Also to be frustrated when you are just going to resell them for over five dollars is silly. He took the time to curate a collection. He doesn’t price everything, his associates do. It just shows you have the reseller mindset instead of the passion mindset. We’ve see you spend thousands on a few books at con prices so to act like that in a true artisans shop is really disheartening
I was just buying stuff for myself, and decided I did not want to do the dance and haggle where they look everything up on ebay etc so I picked their dollar bin. I pointed out a bunch of the books that I pulled out of the dollar bin in the video and they insisted they were $5 when I went to pay. Its not about reselling, passion or anything. Its about changing the price on a whim because you feel like it. Maybe others are ok with that, I just wanted to point out my experience so others who go to shop know what to expect. If you are ok digging through a dollar bin and then being told they were actually $5 that is is cool with me. Just does not work for me.

@@pop-comics Not the guy you want to deal with...I went there several times when Joe wasn't present, I pulled out a few horror magazines, and Pete basically said "Joe's gonna have to price these." I just split, but I've been there hundreds of times when Joe was in the office, and everything was cool! Also, it was never the best neighborhood to be walking around with a stack of comics under your arm.
Yeah the only other time I went was when Joe was there and it was pleasant, he answered my questions and I ended up spending $500. felt like night and day this time.

@@pop-comics Remember the Mysterious Time Machine downtown how they had shots every Weds lol? I loved that little joint, everyone was in that small space some BYOB and everyone was talking to each other about comics, such an amazing experience those two weeks while I was visiting, -you are soo lucy dawg for living in that area lol!
I only went to that shop a few times over the years, but it was always a nice place to check out and buy comics.

I actually didnt mind the dust and all but that was only because Im not from there and the whole experience visiting was fun, but yeah, too bad it was a thumbs down for ya man....
