I replaced both of the pins in mine, and the slop was better, but still too much for my liking. As a last ditch effoet, I did some searching online in Ls1 forums and someone recommended removing the access cover closest to the driver door. You will then have access to the pin. Remove that pin. Take some JB weld and mix a small batch. Place a very small film across the upper half of the pin. (Avoid putting any on the lower half, as the ignition switch slider could get bindy/sticky.) Push the pin in, and let it set for 24 hours...do not move the steering column at all during this time. When done, it should be tight. Mine went from about 3/4" movement down to about 1/2" movement with new pins, to now only this slightest of play..1/16" maybe. Been this way for about 2 years now, and holding strong. Like I said, be careful to not put any or too much on yhe lower end of the pin. I coated the entire pin on mine, and the key/ignition slider that straddles the pin was sticky...but it did loosen up and clearance after a few turns. Its a hack fix, but it worked.
I did this on my 95 Vette. My new pin went in as far as yours. But I’ve often thought did it need to go in further. Made it a little better. Nothing like going into a fast corner with steering column play!! And I’ve driven a 94 Vette with zero column play. Wow was that nice! Can’t believe someone hasn’t come out with a better fix. It's been a few years since I made this video and I can honestly say my column is exactly the same now as it was when I made this. It's not a perfect fix, but seems to be pretty permanent. A zero slop column you say?! No way...! Lol

When I torn down into mine recently ( it’s still not put together yet weather been bipolar in Houston ) the ball bearing behind the blue spring was like outta place with what looked like some sorta o ring or plastic that held it in place but it wasn’t in properly and that’s where most of my wobble is coming from I believe.
@@inthesticksproductions1484 no prob, do yourself a favor and do both sides. I should have, I was just nervous since I wasn't sure about the pins. But a year on...I can tell you, do it all and get it over with
You're probably right...I bought this car new though and I honestly don't remember this annoying issue until I got about 80K. It's like the column just let go then, lol
@@jcx2bby So I got them pushed in, but the upper steering column bearing exploded... The wheel is very loose now lol. I may have gone too far with the hammer I suspect.
just bought two of these pins hopefully it solves my problem considering the slop is so bad i can shut my car off by wiggling the entire steering wheel and cant turn it off unless i tilt it down to the left a bit lmao
@@privgaming3828 could be. There is also a rod that runs down the side of the column that activates the ignition switch. If there's that much slop it could be pulling that rod enough to kill the switch. I'll be interested to see what you find out

Hey man, what exactly you mean with upper half of the pin? The part that goes in first or the part that stays on the outer side?

@@jcx2bby was going call a corvette place in Bristol PA today. Apparently they rebuild steering columns. Crappy GM design!

Would this cause the key to spin in the cylinder freely but not do anything with the car ?
Sounds like either the cylinder is bad or the rod connecting it to the ignition switch is broken or out of place. Did this just start happening?

That’s as good as it’ll get. That’s how it came from the factory. Replacing the right pin won’t improve it.

Im assuming you still need to tear down the entire wheel assembly in order to access these bolts, right?
On this kind of steering column, I believe the answer is yes. It's the only way I know how to do it anyway.

To get that cover off, yes. Unless you want to drill a big hole in the side of the column, there is no other way on this car.
Those aren't the Torx bolt there is 4 external torx bolts further in
You can force in a screw in that hole also
Anything is probably better than the awful slop.
Mine has been parked for years. Rarely move it and it developed that slop...smh
