    What GI Joe *really* needs is a more serious television series on Netflix or HBO, where it maintains much of the tone of the Larry Hama-penned comics. It was still a bit over the top, but not as silly as the cartoon. Cobra Commander was a legitimate threat in the comics. And they tackled serious issues too, such as when Sneak Peek was thought to be dead but was actually in deep cover for years... and when he came home at last, his mother had dementia and didn't know him. And then there was the time a SAW Viper gunned down a BUNCH of long-standing Joe members in cold blood. If someone could bring that to the small screen, complete with the character development from the comics, it would be amazing.

      I think of this all the time. It's unfortunate that Hasbro always opts for modernizing their brands and marketing strategies instead of focusing on their own source material.

      Cloaked Bandit ,when Soldier of Fortune Inc. Used to air, it reminded me of the G.I. Joe team on missions. Movies or a t.v. show like that would work for the G.I. Joe brand. And no more global, international, joint, operating entity. Keep the pit at Fort Bragg. They're all worried about being to politically correct. For instance the new Rambo is from India. You know Bollywood.LMAO

      As for the movie, I would prefer if they went for it with their original clothing, only modernized, not those jetblack-scifi-armors they used on the last live-action movies..would like to see how thise flashy outfits would translate into most recent times (thinking of Sgt.Slaughter, Bazooka..etc)

    After suffering through four transformers movies, and two gi joe movies I am ready to bid the entire cinematic idea goodbye. An army of monkeys could have done a better job. The original 80s movie, the comics, even the script in my head seem like freekin Laurence of Arabia in comparison to what we got. Don’t need em, don’t want em. No more movies!

    • @koloth5139
      @koloth5139 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first one is meh but it was the first film so I let it slide. The second and third Transformers movies are all right. Not great by any means but decent popcorn flicks. The fourth film though... that was a dumpster fire. So bad that between that and Bay saying we would pay to see anything he makes I intentionally boycott the fifth movie. Still haven't seen it and probably won't watch it on Netflix or Hulu either.
      I will say though what I love about the Transformers movies is it revitalized the toy brand for a time. It was great to get the original 80s toys remade. Then to have a modern take on the line with Classics. And now to have a vastly upgraded variation on the originals with Masterpiece. The last 15 years has been a great time to be a collector.

    • @yellowgut
      @yellowgut 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Koloth yeah, I’m a collector of mp and 3p myself, but I’m not so forgiving on any of these movies, all dumpster fires except maybe tf1. Revitalized the franchise? maybe, maybe not. Cartoons and dream wave have kept it alive for the older fans like me imo.

    • @koloth5139
      @koloth5139 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Revitalized as in brought back into the mainstream. I don't know if you remember but collecting during the 90s and early 2000s wasn't all that great. Beast Wars was a good cartoon but the figures were pretty bad and really difficult to find. Car Robots had good toys but a kind of odd show also difficult to find. Then there was the Armada trilogy. Those shows and the toys were really awful, just the worst kind of junk for kids. Then along came the live action movies and suddenly Transformers exploded. It was everywhere and it was great and you didn't even have to watch the movies to reap the benefits. Of course now the new toys are the flimsiest junk around but at least MP is still good.

    • @yellowgut
      @yellowgut 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Koloth I agree, but alternators is what got me back into collecting.Then i bought that first grey mp starscream all those years back, had to order it from japan, I think Takara would have done the mp line movies or not. Now that my mp line is getting near complete I’m hoping for a gi joe line made with the same quality of the marvel selects figures. Then I can finally rest lol.

    • @koloth5139
      @koloth5139 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe. But I doubt the MP line would have continued if MP 01 hadn't been such a massive success.

    I think instead of making live action movies they should make animated movies based on the style of Hasbro cartoons from the 80s. Make a Transformers, G I Joe, M.A.S.K, and Visionaries movie. It would be awesome to see the classic 80s cartoons in one big movie.

    I'll be 50 this summer. I collect the 12" Adventure Team GI Joes. There is a renaissance at Cotswold Collectibles for my age group that is very creative and lively. Their Elite Brigade has a wonderful "70's vibe" to add to the original vintage Adventure Team line of GI Joe from the 1970's.
    And they are by no means the only company catering to the Sixth Scale crowd of yesteryear.

    Great video as always. My 2 cents:
    Cent 1- The most popular age of GIJoe was from the 80's what with the Cartoon and 3 3/4" figures. The line was called GI Joe, A Real AMERICAN hero. True story, here in Canada when I was a kid the series was still called ARAH, but all the sticker sheets had Canadian Flags on them. Sure, us Canadians are like your cooler (temp and temperament) cousin to the North, so the emphasis on the American aspect was never an issue, but outside of North America it certainly was not as beloved in other areas.
    Cent 2 - GI Joe has attempted multiple re-boots with little to no support from the the 3 3/4 base collectors. For example Sigma 6 was a slam dunk but panned from the start by the base for not being what they were used to. The sad thing is that only after the line died a painful death did the brilliance of the figures become apparent.

      GIJoe were one of the most popular boy's toys in Greece during the late 80's and the early 90's, despite the fact that they were somewhat expensive (probably because unlike other toylines that were manufactured under licence by greek toy companies, they were imported). Strangely we had the comic, before the toyline (I think it appeared about 1986-7) and because the name GIJOE meant nothing to anybody (and generally back then they tended to transliterate/translate foreing titles) they named it something than more or less means Strike Force in english.

    Great commentary! With respect to the two Joe movies thus far, I was left with the impression of their (the filmmakers) trying to reinvent the wheel. Imo, the best way to reboot the series is go back to basics. Start with the original 13 Joes from the 80s and keep them ICONIC looking. As in have them in updated versions of their original uniforms, but still recognizable (like the Sideshow figures). Same with the vehicles; I think fans would go nuts to see the original vehicles on screen. Lastly, story-wise, they need look no further than the 80s comics for ideas. Those were great stories, and all the better in having been written by a war vet.

    I wonder if the reason could be that G.I. Joe never aired in many countries, and was named "Action Force" in many others ... there is simply less brand recognition than for brands like Transformers, which sold internationally. The only reason I know G.I. Joe was because we had an international cable package that included English-language channels that aired it. The toys were available under the "Action Force" name for about one year at the few Toys 'R Us stores here in Germany, without TV ads. At least in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, G.I. Joe is simply too obscure to be able to bank on nostalgia.

    Yeah. GIJoe was awesome. But unlike its 80s contemporaries, GIJoe was driven by good old fashion flag waving American patriotism. We now live in a darker political climate. The colors of 'Old Glory' just don't shine as bright as they use to. Just look at Captain America's latest suit.

    • @foldabotZ
      @foldabotZ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You mean the one in Infinity War? Yeah, he's basically Nomad now. A man without a country. Maybe that's what G.I. Joe needs to do to come back; embody what is good in America and remind people of that. Captain America is the same thing.

    • @glasswolf0162
      @glasswolf0162 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My thoughts exactly. And yes, I did mean Cap's infinity war costume. The stars and stripes always stood for the ultimate ideals and the ultimate good guys. And now the greatest Amercan patriot in comic book history dresses like he's ashamed of his flag. That's not right.

    • @roguishpaladin
      @roguishpaladin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I disagree. GI Joe on its surface was about flag-waving, perhaps, and the cartoon fell into that a lot, but the comic especially tried to be a bit more complex than that.
      In the first issue their job is to rescue a pacifist who was in the middle of whistle-blowing an AMERICAN doomsday project when she is kidnapped by Cobra to disclose nuclear secrets. One of the Joes even brings up their concerns about rescuing a "traitor", leading to Hawk reminding the team that they are the good guys, which means they defend the Constitution and the right of civilians to free speech. Burkhart even makes one of the more moving choices in the comic - when Cobra Commander has her held at gunpoint and is bargaining for her life, she shoves herself at him, taking the bullet, because she doesn't want any of the Joes to have to be harmed because of her choices.
      There's other issues where the Joes leave a shady CIA agent out to dry in Afghanistan to answer for his deeds, where they manage to cooperate with a Soviet team (during the Cold War) for a result that met both their needs and stopped the true danger in Cobra, and where the plight of veterans returning home and not necessarily being helped by the government is discussed. The country is at its best when we look at it not as a flag to be waved blindly, but as a whole comprised of good and bad.

      Love your reply. And you're right about the comics having deeper, grittier story lines. Especially "GI Joes - Special Missions" But I disagree. I think GI Joe was more about the optics, not necessarily the reality. The Joe's symbolized the best of America's fighting men. The team was strong because America's ideals were the strongest. Truth, justice, freedom. And the Joe's were the 1st and last line of defense against those who opposed those values.
      For example: Hasbro originally created the GI Joe toy line to represent all the uniformed American armed forces. If you were in the military. If you wore uniform. You were a GI Joe. But Vietnam changed all that. Because for the 1st time the American military was no longer seen as the "good guys". Bad optics equaled poor toy sales.
      So Hasbro revamped GI Joe into a smaller team. It became an elite group of specially trained military men. They wore military attire but not authentic uniforms. And their allegiance was to America's values and not politics.
      But now America's values are in question. And a lot of people in the world are starting to fear us. And not just the "bad guys". In this day and age, a secret American strikeforce of elite commandos, and ninjas might make people feel more unsettled then secure. Especially when the country's leader seems to have Cobra Commander traits. It's all about the optics and toy sales. GI Joe needs a clean flag like Transformers need alt modes.

    With Bumblebee being essentially a soft reboot of the Transformers cinematic universe, now would be a prime time for a GIJoe reboot to tie in with Transformers on the big screen. Imagine if after the credits, John Cena was approached by General Hawk to join a top secret multinational fighting force, codename GIJoe...

    04:48 The Transformers animated series had an episode (The Transformers, _Only Human_ S3, Ep23 ) in which they mention that G.I. JOE and COBRA existed in the past. A movie that links them together wouldn't be far-fetched. MASK and COPS also are in the same universe, so a cross-over with any of those Hasbro properties would still work.

Falcon return, as someone who is a cocky young US Army Officer, who BOUGHT his commission (through bribery or some looked down means) but is still pretty intelligent, but eventually learns what it really means to be a soldier, and eventually a GI Joe. Also, Really need a on screen appearance of Low Light.

    You could do what I have theorized and say that MASK is actually a clandestine branch of GI JOE, as VENOM is a secret branch of COBRA.
    In regards to a GI JOE/Transformers crossover, that's been done before in the Transformers comics.
    Also, the original 1984 animated Cobra Commander made a cameo in the G1 Transformers animated series. Season 4, Episode 88 - "Only Human".

    I think the best way to connect G. I. Joe to the Transformers movies is to have the third Joe movie recruit Josh Duhamel (I probably spelled that wrong) and Tyrese’s characters from the Transformers movies into G. I. Joe and have them become Duke and Heavy Duty (probably Roadblock though)

      @Mike Kaess I also thoroughly enjoyed Retaliation and it was just shy of 1 million times better than that abortion of a first movie. The action was much stronger and harder, better plot, better cast, better acting and plenty of nods and homages to classic ARAH comics. As far as the figures go, while all I really want is for Hasbro to relaunch the 25th anniversary / "vintage" 3.75 line (just like they are now doing with Stat Wars), I would pay well more than $20 a pop for 6in Joe's done the right way with tons of guns/accessories and in a vintage artwork style window box with file card on the back. Having said that, I'd also like to see Mezco take the line as their current 1:12 Collective figs are practically perfection. Hasbro 6in figures would obviously be more affordable but Mezco would be the only way we could truly get all the accessories and finer details like an actual metal head sculpt for Destro, etc. Unless I'm mistaken (and I could be), 2017 was the first year where there was not a single Hasbro Joe figure on the shelves at retail since 1982...being a Joe fan and Joe collector is nothing short of soul crushing at this point. Also, as far as the whole "shared universe" thing where Snake Eyes and My Little Pony team up to defeat a giant Furbytron...NO THANK YOU

      Yep after the 25th line it seems like collectors already have all of the best characters and sadly kids just aren't into the 4" figures any more. 6" somewhere between Star Wars Black and the Marvel Legends line would give collectors a new start point and a scale where kids can play with figures from different lines.

  • @MichaelAlexKawa

    I was looking forward to the Hasbro Cinematic Universe, but now it seems that after the Bumblebee solo movie, the Transformers Movieverse is coming to an end. So it makes the prequel movie (Bumblebee) seem kind of useless, and if they bring Transformers back we have to go though yet another building of that universe. And I guess the same would be true for G.I.Joe, and it is sad cause I thought Dwayne Johnson was prefect as Roadblock.
    Plus to add to all of this, after this summer, the IDW comic universe is also gonna be rebooted, which means all that history and crossovers will be erased.
    So the thought of waiting till 2020 for a possible G.I.Joe movie and a very vague chance of a shared universe is not only frustrating, but also kind of annoying.
    Sorry for the rant, your video gave gave me a lot of fuel for thought. :)
    Anyways I guess if there is a chance for a G.I.Joe movie I would love to see Shipwreck in it, and for the Cobras perhaps the Crimson Twins.

      It was not a good decision but it was the scenario. Yet they really should reboot and do other movies. Looking more like G.I.Joe, like you know, the character having their actual appearance... Not Zartan looking like an ordinary guy (when he is not the president), Destro looking like and ordinary guy and Baroness being a good girl (that is not about appearance but it spoiled the movie for me).

    DESTRO (classic) needs to be in the next one, and not with bad CGI this time! I agree, Retaliation was a vast improvement over Rise of Cobra. It would be cool to see Roadblock (Johnson) get down and dirty in a big fight at the end with Destro (recast with a more muscular and menacing actor).
