It won't gain value for the same reason real art doesn't gain value: Unless it's made by someone famous, it'll sell for a few pounds. NFTs are even worse than that, because you can't even display them on your wall. Or you can, but you don't need an NFT for that.
i almost cried when i saw qinni nfts. she was one of the most impactful digital artists i can think of and was a genuinely wonderful person. she passed about 2 years ago and seeing dozens of assholes making money off of her art is infuriating. the process of stopping stolen art nfts is so difficult, i can't imagine having to do that as a grieving family member or friend

The fact that people really thought stealing at all was okay no less from DEAD ARTISTS who can't defend themselves or their art is so disgusting. I once said the people doing that have no comprehension of empathy, respect, or basic level humanity, and I stand by that.

It's gotten to the point I've actually seen NFT bros go to actual artists who do commissions and try to mock them by saying "I can just screenshot your work and save it" Like....yeah You can, and I'm sure tons of other people have if pinterest is anything to go off. They're just so far gone in their little fairytale block chain land they forget how the rest of the world works. We don't do commission/people don't buy commissions just to OWN a piece of art no one else can. They buy it so they can have an artist they like create something specific that they want.

For those who want a great NFT failure story, look up what gaming company Ubisoft did recently :) Ubisoft announced that NFTs are the future of gaming (...no, they never elaborate) and created nearly-identical item skins NFTs for a game not many people are playing nor fond of. The marketing campain probably costed them a lot of money. The announcement has a 95% dislike ratio and they were forced to private it out of shame. They ended up selling 15 our of like 2500 NFTs and earned roughly 300$. However, the cost of making those NFTs was around 800$ so in the end they made negative numbers lmao

Screenshotting is praxis, but so is sharing and supporting artists who are affected by theft! If other people are profiting off of their work, the least we can do is try to support them and spread the word so that they can still put bread on the table
I'm a digital artist/illustrator. Thanks for covering this. many of us are having to close our galleries, stop posting our work, and are losing our livelihoods from this awful shit. Opensea are criminals and do not give a shit about artists' rights. The world is losing out on artistic voices because we are terrified of the rampant theft this has caused.
If Deviantart can do automated checks for content on their site being sold on Opensea, Opensea can do checks for if things being sold is stolen from Deviantart. They just don't have the incentive to do so.

One of my favourite artists Qinni, a very well known artist might I add, who passed not even two years ago, has had her art stolen and mounted for NFTS by these fucking leeches and it makes me so fucking mad
NFTs have been one of the most disheartening things to see as an artist and hell... I'm small and don't have a lot of notable art yet to begin with but the possibility of someone coming along and deciding to steal and profit off of my work, fucking up the environment in the process hurts in more ways than one. Like, this kind of stuff makes me think "wow I shouldn't make art" just to prevent it from even happening, even though I know it would do me a LOT of harm not to.

there was an instagram artist who died of cancer a few years back, and someone stole their art and minted it as nfts. their sibling had to make a statement on their twitter clarifying that this wasnt a family member uploading the art but a complete stranger. truly disgusting.

People have been stealing art for NFTs for ages. Over a year ago when I found out about them it was *because* artists were being exploited over cryptobros looking for a quick buck. In reality NFTs are awful for artists. They encourage theft and capitalize on traction that can be given to actual dedicated artists.
I can't remember when I heard of NFTs, I think maybe to the beginning of this year. However, I do know recently the Transformers fandom took a hit from brazen NFT art theft. Someone just loaded their Opensea with fanart and even official concept art of Transformers. I had to check it to make sure my own TF artwork wasn't on the list. I got upset because I was seeing art I really liked, but, of course, how the heck am I supposed to know who made it?!
honestly if a person would rather spend thousands of dollars on the ugliest picrew instead of giving an artist the same amount to do a fully custom piece then they really don't give a shit about artists

My wife is a professional artist who had their art stolen and minted into an NFT. Can confirm, the appeal process is a nightmare and it's consciously designed to be that way. If I can have one wish granted today, it'd be to end world poverty. NFTs ceasing to exist is up there too.

AI art really depresses me tbh, at least when it's for profit. I'll acknowledge that I'm biased as a bitter, broke artist, but it really does make me feel some type of way that instead of hiring an artist to help their vision come to life, people can just go "lemme type some shit into an AI! It'll make the art for me!" Kinda feels like it'll soon become impossible for artists to get work and all art will become soulless and meaningless. But I am also cynical in general so yknow
So hear me out. I think AI art can be an incredible thing, when used by actual artists. I've seen some kinda predictions when it comes to AI and art. Think about how, in the future when AI is way more advanced, how we could use it to make insane pieces. Of course you can't keep idiots from using it, but I'm hoping eventually there will be an art AI program a la adobe photoshop. Could a not-digital-artist TRY to paint digitally in photoshop? Sure, but if you don't understand every nook and cranny and every aspect of PS your art is going to be awful. I'm hoping one day we can advance to that. Where we artists have complicated enough software that it becomes nearly impossible to create anything with that software without actually dedicating yourself to the artistry. If someone wanted to make digital art in PS for cheap, they'd have to actually learn how to draw, so at that point they are selling legit art anyway. You really can't cheat that kind of thing into existence like you can with the very simple AI we have now. Imagine an AI that knows us. It knows our history, our hopes and dreams and fears. It knows our art style and it knows what we have drawn before. It can help us break through barriers we never knew we had as artists. Humans form an immensely creative force but we still have doubts and insecurities. An art AI can be programmed to help us see and draw what we couldn't even think of before. I don't even know how this would work tbh but it sounds fucking sweet and thinking of it this way makes it much less scary and a lot more interesting. I believe AI can honestly deliver us to a better future. We just have to embrace it. Imagine AI doing all the tedious shit in society, then we can give every person a baseline income and housing, provide great medical & mental healthcare, and transition to a service based economy while AI does the shit we hate doing. AI is only as intelligent & independent as we make it. I say we embrace this shit and end hunger and homelessness. I know this hypothetical is far-fetched but it is my ideal world tbh :p

I have been very purposeful in not selling any of my work as NFTs, so naturally someone stole my work and is selling it as an NFT. Opensea takes forever to respond to a claim, so it's still up. Insanely frustrating.

I had an old art teacher in uni who sold NFTs which he said literally took him 5 mins to make on free ai art gen software. I have since dropped out of art school.
I think it's worth it to talk about how a lot of art practices have a poor environmental impact (almost all of them actually). However, there is such an intrinsic disregard for the environment and ethics in general with NFTs that feels like a particularly horrendous encapsulation of predatory capitalism.

Honestly, reporting art that's been stolen to mint NFT's is (from experience) an utter pain in the ass. They literally make it as hard as possible to do, and I'm fairly certain that the only reason the company I volunteer for managed to get our stolen art taken down so quickly is that we're a game with an LLC and they'd literally ripped game assets from our promotional material to try make money from. So basically, unless you can threaten genuine legal action you're a bit screwed and that's not right.

nft bros have also hacked big artists on twitter accounts and it’s been scary for twitter artists cuz uhhh yeah their art account could get hacked, all their art whipped from it and turned into a nft hell hole, also dead digital artists have had their work stolen with family having to come on to their accounts letting ppl know this is not the families doing, and yeah so my artists can’t do much cuz our work is trivialized and we all barely make enough to take legal action or like you said have time to go through the paperwork while also doing commissions or day jobs
Some added perspective on the point around 5:40 about reposting from an online artist! Most artists don’t mind you downloading their work and using it in a personal capacity, (eg desktop or phone background) or as a reference. If you want to use it on your social media (eg profile picture or banner) most would prefer you ask first (as the piece may be highly personal, like a gift for a friend), but buy-and-large, if you credit, you’re fine. What people do tend to take issue with are repost *accounts*. Retweeting or reblogging artists is a good thing, but large repost accounts are usually automated and monetized. Of course, exposure is a good thing (pretty hard to make money off commissions if no one is commissioning you…[am open for commissions, btw]) but often, these accounts don’t prominently credit their artists, and fewer ask for permission. If you want to share someone’s art on another platform, make sure to ask, credit within the first line of description, and as a general rule of thumb, don’t ask to use commissioned work, as the rights to the work have already been sold to the commissioner.

One of my favourite artists Qinni, a very well known artist might I add, who passed not even two years ago, has had her art stolen and mounted for NFTS by these fucking leeches and it makes me so fucking mad
NFTs have been one of the most disheartening things to see as an artist and hell... I'm small and don't have a lot of notable art yet to begin with but the possibility of someone coming along and deciding to steal and profit off of my work, fucking up the environment in the process hurts in more ways than one.
Like, this kind of stuff makes me think "wow I shouldn't make art" just to prevent it from even happening, even though I know it would do me a LOT of harm not to.

I hate to say it but even if his art isn't stolen for NFTs, if it's popular enough, it WILL be stolen by somebody at some point. He should prepare himself for it bc it WILL happen eventually. Whether it's unofficial merch, knockoff merch, just straight up reposting with no credit, it's just gonna happen. It's probably going to be stolen by another artist, too, which is the saddest part.
I have seen NFTs of Madeyewlooks makeup looks on open sea, and illegal use of the monster girl maker app as NFTs. I’m honestly thinking of starting up a DA again just for the ability to check if my art has been stolen. People have been stealing art for NFTs for ages. Over a year ago when I found out about them it was *because* artists were being exploited over cryptobros looking for a quick buck. In reality NFTs are awful for artists. They encourage theft and capitalize on traction that can be given to actual dedicated artists.
I can't remember when I heard of NFTs, I think maybe to the beginning of this year. However, I do know recently the Transformers fandom took a hit from brazen NFT art theft. Someone just loaded their Opensea with fanart and even official concept art of Transformers. I had to check it to make sure my own TF artwork wasn't on the list. I got upset because I was seeing art I really liked, but, of course, how the heck am I supposed to know who made it?!

My wife is a professional artist who had their art stolen and minted into an NFT. Can confirm, the appeal process is a nightmare and it's consciously designed to be that way.

AI art really depresses me tbh, at least when it's for profit. I'll acknowledge that I'm biased as a bitter, broke artist, but it really does make me feel some type of way that instead of hiring an artist to help their vision come to life, people can just go "lemme type some shit into an AI! It'll make the art for me!" Kinda feels like it'll soon become impossible for artists to get work and all art will become soulless and meaningless. But I am also cynical in general so yknow
So hear me out. I think AI art can be an incredible thing, when used by actual artists. I've seen some kinda predictions when it comes to AI and art. Think about how, in the future when AI is way more advanced, how we could use it to make insane pieces. Of course you can't keep idiots from using it, but I'm hoping eventually there will be an art AI program a la adobe photoshop. Could a not-digital-artist TRY to paint digitally in photoshop? Sure, but if you don't understand every nook and cranny and every aspect of PS your art is going to be awful. I'm hoping one day we can advance to that. Where we artists have complicated enough software that it becomes nearly impossible to create anything with that software without actually dedicating yourself to the artistry. If someone wanted to make digital art in PS for cheap, they'd have to actually learn how to draw, so at that point they are selling legit art anyway. You really can't cheat that kind of thing into existence like you can with the very simple AI we have now.
Imagine an AI that knows us. It knows our history, our hopes and dreams and fears. It knows our art style and it knows what we have drawn before. It can help us break through barriers we never knew we had as artists. Humans form an immensely creative force but we still have doubts and insecurities. An art AI can be programmed to help us see and draw what we couldn't even think of before. I don't even know how this would work tbh but it sounds fucking sweet and thinking of it this way makes it much less scary and a lot more interesting. I believe AI can honestly deliver us to a better future. We just have to embrace it. Imagine AI doing all the tedious shit in society, then we can give every person a baseline income and housing, provide great medical & mental healthcare, and transition to a service based economy while AI does the shit we hate doing. AI is only as intelligent & independent as we make it. I say we embrace this shit and end hunger and homelessness.
I know this hypothetical is far-fetched but it is my ideal world tbh :p

I think it's worth it to talk about how a lot of art practices have a poor environmental impact (almost all of them actually). However, there is such an intrinsic disregard for the environment and ethics in general with NFTs that feels like a particularly horrendous encapsulation of predatory capitalism.

I can only imagine what watercolors could do to fish if dumped in bulk into the ocean for long enough.

Honestly, reporting art that's been stolen to mint NFT's is (from experience) an utter pain in the ass. They literally make it as hard as possible to do, and I'm fairly certain that the only reason the company I volunteer for managed to get our stolen art taken down so quickly is that we're a game with an LLC and they'd literally ripped game assets from our promotional material to try make money from. So basically, unless you can threaten genuine legal action you're a bit screwed and that's not right.

Most artists don’t mind you downloading their work and using it in a personal capacity, (eg desktop or phone background) or as a reference. If you want to use it on your social media (eg profile picture or banner) most would prefer you ask first (as the piece may be highly personal, like a gift for a friend), but buy-and-large, if you credit, you’re fine. What people do tend to take issue with are repost *accounts*. Retweeting or reblogging artists is a good thing, but large repost accounts are usually automated and monetized. Of course, exposure is a good thing (pretty hard to make money off commissions if no one is commissioning you…[am open for commissions, btw]) but often, these accounts don’t prominently credit their artists, and fewer ask for permission. If you want to share someone’s art on another platform, make sure to ask, credit within the first line of description, and as a general rule of thumb, don’t ask to use commissioned work, as the rights to the work have already been sold to the commissioner.
