I play a '70s Fender Telecaster that's been my primary bass for 30 years and for a time I had a '66 Thunderbird as well. Those De Gier basses sound amazing and truly capture the tones of the basses they are emulating.
Love those ~50 years ago I had a Telecaster bass with the single coil pickup - got half-drunk and de-fretted it as could not afford a fretless - that style 51 P/70's T = a favorite in feel - aesthetics and sound quality. I did not care for the Telecaster bass with big humbucker at the time so added a Bill Lawrence single coil. Love to hear pick playing especially if muted.
The early 50s P bass pickup and the late 60s Tele bass pickup (very similar single coil pickups) are the best sounding bass pickups. I'm surprised that more makers don't use them. They just create the most perfect bass sound. Those De Gier basses do sound great, especially the blue one.
Nice review! The fiesta red bass really grows on you. First I had to wait for Gregor to send it back to Sander :) Now I own it for a couple of weeks and I cannot stop playing it. Very inspiring instrument, not only its unique sound but also playability is excellent. I sold another bass to get this one, best decision ever!
I have encontered basses with truss rod adjustments at the bass body ( Not in the neck ) where the truss rod adjustment opening is " Too Small " for the truss rod adjustment tool to work without damaging ( Scratching ) the pick guard. As a result, the neck had to be detached from the bass body to adjust the truss rod noting this is painful. Have you tested the truss rod adjustment on these basses to see if access is done easily without contortions, without special tools and with " No " damage ( Scratching ) to the pick guard. Note: Thes basses sound awesome !
Fender made them in the 70s, called A-neck Precisions. I have two of them. They are awesome. For buget basses the new Squier Sonic P-Basses have a jazz necks and NO extra bridge pickup.
De Gier is up there with the very best. No question about it… Not cheap but fair priced for a handmade masterpiece. Don’t judge before you actually played them.
I used to have a bass like this. The through-the-body bridge is a bad idea. It makes the higher register of the E string so out of tune it's unusable. It once caused the E string to break, on stage! I modified the bridge to be more normal. This was the original Precision bass. Then in 1956 Fender went to the current model.
Hi Gregor, why only eights notes and pick playing. I believe these basses has more to offer. And it must be hard for a young bassplayer to stand in a line with Frank, Lars, Rene and Kai but…
Actually old instruments can be incredible, and they sometimes tell a story. Artificially "aged" instruments suck. There, I said it. It's an euphemism for "we couldn't bother to get the finishing right, and we'll even charge you extra for that!" And people buy them - it's unreal. PS. These don't even *sound* that good.
The reddish one! Wow. That T-Bird pickup is the shizzle. It's like a P and J have had a baby. And that baby has hung around Courtney Love a lot. It sounds big. And dirty. Great bass. Great channel. Love that blind guy's playing. He makes wanna pick up a bass. That bass.
@@MrRickburns I don't think so, a de Gier bass is quality material and handmade. And you just pay for it. But that doesn't mean there aren't cheaper better ones.
A jazz bass does not have a "neck" pickup. That is, a pickup at the end of the neck. As seen on EB3 basses. It has a "middle" pickup, and a bridge pickup. With the "middle" pickup being near to the centre of the body when measured from the bridge to the neck.
For 4150 euro, you can find a vintage Fender or a custom shop and have some spare money, and as much as they try nobody will ever come close to a sound of a vintage instrument, not to mention they have more of a resale value than these basses. To me the noise-cancelling single coils never have that single coil twang and I'd much rather have some hum than a plastic sounding pickup. Yes it is hard to hear that difference in a mix, but if I don't like the bass sound dry out of the amp I feel inclined to avoid it when picking an instrument to play. Just my two cents, the sire D5 is a much better option for a LOT less money.
The finish has zero impact on the sound of an electric instrument. The sound of an electric instrument comes from the electronics and only the electronics. Tone woods, finish, hardware material etc are all snake oil. For the love of god please stop with this.
Please educate yourself on these topics. It always baffles me that people who have obviously never compared similar instruments with different features make these claims towards industry professionals. Confidence should be backed up by knowledge. Go and learn

maybe take the time and get some real world experience. Go to a well stocked guitar shop and compare 2 identical Fender basses, one with a maple fretboard and one with a rosewood fretboard. This is just one change, that already has an audible impact on the vibe of these basses. But it goes much deeper if you're willing to dig deeper. I'm well educated in this matter. Doesnt seem to be made very well, bridge is shit, frett board is cracked on one , pickup winding on single coil shows instead of being covered ! Not good at all !
Crazy how much people are willing to pay for inferior hardware, just for the vintage look and vintage sound (e.g. possibly (not necessarily) bad intonation with this bridge 😅)
lol you always gravitated towards jb...blabla..I NEVER SAW YOU FRETTING JUST 1 NOTE , here or on your channel..nowhere..you're just a dealer...that's why I will NEVER choose some gear after watching your videos
Even Johann smiled at the end of some clips 😃
he LOVED that bass :)
in this video, we witness 2 rarities, Gregor playing guitar and Gregor singing.

The one with the thunderbird pickup sounds AMAZING!
I agree! ⚡
the demo bass line sounds killer... and the old fashion camera transition is very fun to watch.
Sustain and single note sounds are really good
Those basses are beautiful. Great tone! 🤘
These basses are SWEET but that drive tone is incredible!
Really nice overdrive on that first clip.
That's a tone you can walk into any studio with.
Great Dutch guttural g when mentioning de Gier, Gregor👌

And it's even better with flats! So growly, fat, and yet so versatile, from thumpy, beefy to singing tones.
Cool basses!
nice, I like the red
Gregory has a cool Euroboy Turbonegro image. ⚡️🤙🏽
This bass player sounds awesome and his look would work perfectly in a Ramone's, Talking Heads or the Cars style punk band
SHOW MORE OF THE 1 SADDLE BASS WTF GREGOR! (sorry for caps I love your channel)
Fucking love Vector
anyone know the song at 1:40?
That fralin single coil is sweet

That’s typically an issue with Vintage or Reissue Fender Basses. De Gier does not make mistakes like this
Sting has a Fender made one with the humbucker, his new bass
Not Fender. Built in Italy by Jacaranda Guitars .))
Looks fantastic! ❤
It would want to be incredible for the price..
The sound of the blue but the looks of the red and black.
è bbbbbelllllllisssssssimooooooooooo. lo voglioooooooo
Gorgeous basses.
Cool bass. But I wish someone would make a pee base with a jazz neck and no extra bridge pickup

Great basses, got them since many years.
What drive have you got on this? I need it.
we used the EBS Black Haze 2 in the distortion samples. The lighter drive sounds earlier in the video are a hot driven tube sim plugin

How the frick does Johann play so well with his thumb hanging over the neck like that!
lol, like why do I even practice technique?
He’s very VERY tall. A neck has different proportions for him

the old-school 51 is a Fralin if I remember correctly. Should be mentioned in the video somewhere ;)

Per il prezzo che hanno non mi sembrano così superiori ad un buon Fender, comunque per capirlo bene dovrei imbracciarli, così serve poco
Contra baixo Bonito
Pity I can't afford one.
Pelham Blue for the win. Just a warmer tone that suits my style
The idea of a primitive sound, no compromises, is very attractive...4285€ for the base version? Not my piece of wood...
They are indeed fine bass guitars, but that's what you can expect when you pay 3 to 4 thousand for a bass
And that’s only a few hundred dollars of material. A cheap CNC machine can build it perfectly in minutes.
@@MrRickburns I don't think so, a de Gier bass is quality material and handmade. And you just pay for it. But that doesn't mean there aren't cheaper better ones.
Johann woke up that day and thought, "Should I go for the 'Ringo on the cover or Revolver' look? Maybe Thurston Moore? Eh, I'll do both."
GAS flaring up…
I love how limitated Johanns playing is. Just like mine!
Nice...
