- Norfolk Southerns' last train on the Norfolk & Western Railway Peavine Line aka Cincinnati Line. Removing the last cars from Peebles Ohio and the EMD SW9 end cab switcher locomotive from Winchester Ag Services. They were also removing the last storage cars off the line. Switching the industrial spur in Peebles was filmed April 24, 2014. The last 2 shots were filmed on 4-25-14 at Winchester Ohio and Mount Orab. CCET reopened the line to Winchester and Mount Zion on March 20, 2015 by returning the SW9 to the grain elevator in Winchester. The track through Peebles to Plum Run, Ohio was reopened in early 2017. See my videos of the first trains back. 69+ route miles of this railroad branch line are leased to Cincinnati East Terminal Railway (CCET). CCET is owned by Frontier Rail. Thanks for watching! Update: Although NS trains will not be returning to this line another 16 miles of track were reopened by CCET. They have extended operations from MP62.2 to MP78.45 to reach a quarry there. Railroad maintenance of way did a lot of track repairs to reach the Hanson quarry at Plum Run. See my videos of the first ballast gravel trains coming out of the quarry with a remote control caboose! The line will reopened past Peebles very soon. The CCET has reached an agreement with Norfolk Southern to operate the line all the way to Mineral Springs. The Surface Transportation Board filings were posted on Friday the 4th of November 2106. Hopefully this means that the Plum Run Quarry is going to be coming on line as a shipping customer for the CCET. Back in 1987, Plum run was putting out more than 3,000 carloads a year from their location according to a 1987 Norfolk Southern inspection crew PDF file from the Cincyrails website. If nothing else, it means more storage space for railcars that aren`t needed at this point in time.

Cool, thanks! That siding that the train was coming off of in Peebles has not been used since I filmed this in 2014. This is one of my favorite videos. The last Norfolk Southern train on this line. I had words in this video for locations and dates but they all disappeared when TH-cam did away with TH-cam editor. One of these days I might redo some of my older videos and make them better. Most of my older videos aren't very good because I was learning one step at a time as I went.
Gosh you scared me, I thought NS as a whole was calling it quits.
Nice catch! Love the switcher locomotive! I actually saw an NS locomotive on a long BNSF covered hopper train here in Bakersfield CA a couple hours ago.

Yeah I posted it before but its one of my favorites so I was looking for a reason to repost it. Lol
You can always tell what rails belong to N&W by the telegraph poles along the tracks..they're the only ones that have an extension arm sticking up on the pole..
Nice video.. Sad conclusion.. The signals at the end were awesome.. Rarely do you see signal masts mounted on relay boxes anymore.. Hopefully, they'll survive long enough to greet another train.
Its possible that they might see another train some day but the signals will never get turned back on again. I use to love seeing those signals in use. They were shut off about 11 plus years ago. I wrote the date down in my journal somewhere.

It is a very interesting railroad. When CCET first started leasing this line from NS, they had to lease an RJ Corman engine until they got one of their own that worked.

So glad CCET reopened this line . Didn't want to see another railroad dismantled & turn into a bike path, lol
It was close. NS wanted to remove the line but were ordered to keep it in place. I filmed a salvage crew driving down the line to estimate the salvage value. I think the whole line is safe right now although about 26 miles of it hasn't seen a train since 2003

Great catch! How many trains does CCET plan to run on it?
They would like to run a train everyday if they could get the business. Right now the part that is in use through my town only gets used once or twice a week. They are also planning on building an industrial park and put a spur into it. I hope they can get some customers. I remember when this line was busy and had up to about 6 trains a day.
I just noticed that all the words in this video have disappeared. that happened in all my videos where I used TH-cam Editor. When they did away with TH-cam Editor, the words all disappeared in all of my videos. Wow, bummer

They reopened part of it through my town. We went almost a year without a train in my town and I filmed the first one back. I don't know whats going to happen to the 43 miles of track that are out of service but part of it might get reopened to a quarry if we are lucky and somebody puts some big bucks out for track repair at the quarry.
Hopefully this line will get more than 2 trains a day.

Yes, about half of the line is still in use. They reopened the part through my town last year. They are still talking about opening another 12 or 13 miles to reach a gravel quarry. They have been talking about doing that for a couple years now. I hope they can. I will film the first train to the quarry if it reopens but the tracks at the quarry are in real bad condition. For reason nobody wants to spend the money for repairs. Lol. Anyway, greetings to you and Tony!!

Was an ES44 normal here? it seems odd seeing an ES44 doubleheading with an SW9!
Normally they ran a Dash 9 but the ES44 make it here every once in a while. the line was only ran once a week when this was filmed. this video shows them removing the SW9 from the grain elevator and collecting the remaining cars stored on the line in order to close it. It closed for almost a year and then reopened with a new railroad company leases the line. Cincinnati East Terminal Railway now operates the line a few days a week

From looking at everything looks the yellow engine is a railserve I locomotive I used to work for them are they taken over?
Yes, that was a Railserve engine that I filmed at Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati. I don't know who does the switching there today

Nice video Jaw Tooth. CCET continues to push east along the Cincinnati District. They just filed with the STB to reopen the line to milepost CT 78.45, at Mineral Springs. This is near the Jaybird Road crossing between Peebles and Rarden. That is Eastwood Road near Mt Orab Ohio. I have a lot of videos from that crossing. Its hard to catch a train there.

With Jim Squires having NS selling everything off,this might as well be a possible fact.
They are going to be running gravel trains from Peebles soon so these rails will shine again soon. There are no customers on this section of the line but that is about to change this summer

I have been collecting train since I was six years old, and still have some of them today. I wish that I could get with someone in purchase this engine and keep it running I love CSX, Norfolk Southern, Canadian Pacific, and Burlington Northern, and I like Santa Fe and I like the blue Rock Island, and I like to someday be a conductor, oh I wish that we all can get together in purchase this line, and keep the trains running, trains forever!!!!!
I hope so too! Since I filmed this video they have reopened part of the eastern section of this line for car storage. They are also going to be pulling gravel out of the quarry just east of Peebles this summer, I believe. The last 26 miles or so of the line don't really have much hope but they are still in place.

Yes, they cut the raw timbers from forests near here and ship them out to be treated for use as new railroad ties. The business relocated after NS shut down the line. However, this section of track was reopened a couple years later by Cincinnati East Terminal Railway but the customer never came back. The only trains that go through Peebles Ohio now are railroad cars for long term storage and occasionally CCET will get a single car load of gravel from the quarry east of here for track ballast. I have videos of the first trains back but NS has not run a train on this line since I filmed this. Thanks for watching!
Too bad they can't grease the tracks to cut down on the high pitch noise when the wheels go round a curve.
5:06 I wonder why they put an orange flag instead of a FRED at the end of the train?
Because they rarely run at night or in poor visibility. Some of my videos they use a FRED when they are out near dark but that is rare.

If CCET wants they can steal the Virginia connection for NS and steal the Virginia city name, Winchester and name it the Winchester & Southern Railroad of Ohio.
