Ever since I read My New York Diary over a decade ago, Doucet's comics have been stuck in my brain. I completely agree with you about the darkness yet hilarity of those early stories. Even the fully autobiographical stores felt like crazy dreams. Every issue of the series is indelible, including the letters pages! 😁
it's her most serious and "mature" work for sure... should be read in those classes in which they seem to teach comics in the US (unimaginable over here I have to say with some envy). The melancholic ending is just gorgeous. Yet I'd say that nothing beats some of the outrageous hilarious short stories in the first couple of dirty plottes.
@@earlgrey862 It was the one based on an early Tintin movie called Tintin and the Golden Fleece. I think they just took some stills from the movie and added some text to it. But it had many of the main characters.
Had to check out the first few minutes, Doucet is fantastic. I only have a couple of the singles but she was in anthologies as well back in the day. Good looking set! I’ll have to hunt it down.
... or to get the missing singles. as beautiful as the set is: if you have the dirty plottes 1 - 12 you have her best comics ... period... and very probably much cheaper.
Julie Doucet has a unique voice in the world of comics, extremely personal and original, not for everyone, for sure. Too bad she's not creating for comics anymore. The D&Q edition is gorgeous tough a little for the expensive side.
@@earlgrey862 I came across her in Weirdo magazine. Then Last Gasp did that book about her when she died at an early age. I believe the book collects everything. I think she'd be just up your street.
Nice introduction to Julie Doucet work. I am ordering her D&Q box set today. Thank you!

Great video
Marvellous, thank you always for your wonderful videos! Would love to discover more female comic creators.
Julie Doucet is a case of a single comic book purchase (until now). But fortunately, I think I have chosen the right one - My New York Diary

I love her drawings. I bought dirty plotte last month and I'm super happy 😍
That was a fun review. That Comix 2000 looks very interesting. I used to have a Tintin photo-comic. It was pretty terrible.
a Tintin photocomic? please explain! :)

I'd love to see a video about Dori Seda's Dori Stories book
don't know her, sorry... oh wait, that's not true... she's included in some anthology called "comic sisters" curated by Diane Noomin

Crazy stuff but I think not really my cup of tea 😉
probably .... or maybe it's just too much crazy shit at once for you :)
Yeah, I thought so too for 30 years. But after this video I’m finally gonna take a chance on her and order that boxset.
You're early.
