Pokémon Scarlet & Violet - Sceptile the Unrivaled

  • Not a lot of fully evolved first-partner Pokémon left (after this one are just five: Feraligatr, Torterra, Infernape, Serperior, and Incineroar), and this one takes place almost immediately after the previous one, featuring Emboar, so I more strongly suspect there is something they want to do pretty soon, but they want to get all of these ones out of the way first. So here it is, Sceptile the Unrivaled.
This evolution line is probably better known for its base form Treecko, and probably even its middle stage, Grovyle, than Sceptile. After all, Ash got a Treecko in the Generation III part of the anime, who eventually evolved into a Grovyle and stayed that way for most of it, only evolving into a Sceptile near the end. Grovyle was also a major character in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, who we never saw evolve. Consequently, there was a bunch of merchandise featuring Treecko and Grovyle but not Sceptile. Nevertheless, Sceptile appears to be a Pokémon associated with Brendan when he’s depicted as a distinct character, as seen in the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Animated Trailer, Pokémon Generations, and Pokémon Masters EX. (May gets Swampert, for the record.) Sceptile was given the Dragon-type Tera most likely as a reference to Mega Sceptile, who gains that type to become the Grass/Dragon type combination.
This is probably one of the more difficult 7-star Tera Raid Battles to design, since Sceptile has a glass cannon stat scheme, with a high Speed, good Attack and Sp. Attack, and low HP, Defense, and Sp. Defense. In addition, Sceptile’s Hidden Ability, Unburden, has no application in a Tera Raid Battle, as the subject Pokémon don’t hold items, and thus, Unburden has no chance to activate. This one can still catch you by surprise though, so I looked up how Sceptile works and came up with this:
    Weezing (Galarian) (Gilded Age)
    Level 100
    Ability: Levitate
Base Stats: 252 HP, 252 Defense, 6 Sp. Attack
    Hold Item: Covert Cloak
    Nature: Relaxed
    Tera: Fairy
Moves: Strange Steam, Clear Smog, Acid Spray, Taunt
The big surprise you might see, as you can deduce based on my game plan above, is that this Sceptile is a physical attacker. He’ll use Leaf Storm at the beginning, causing his Sp. Attack to drop by two stages, then use physical attacks for the rest of the raid: Leaf Blade (for his native type STAB), Breaking Swipe (for his Tera type STAB), and Thunder Punch (to hit anything that resists both Grass and Dragon), with frequent use of Dragon Dance to boost Attack and Speed to unmanageable amounts if you don’t put a stop to that quickly.
Pretty early on, Sceptile will reset your Pokémon’s stat gains, as are those of your teammates, and he will ut up the Tera Raid barrier shortly afterwards (though if Sceptile loses HP quickly enough, he’ll put up the barrier before resetting your stat gains). This barrier occupies half of Sceptile’s total HP, which is 35 times higher than normal. After the stat reset, Sceptile will then drain your Tera Orb charge. This will be the only time he does this, followed by Sceptile resetting his own stat drops about two turns later (or one if a Pokémon faints between then). Once the barrier breaks, Sceptile will use Earthquake. Sceptile doesn’t have any scripted actions past that.
I chose Galarian Weezing for resistance to Grass and immunity to Dragon and Ground, plus a high physical Defense to prevent Sceptile from doing too much. Taunt is to temporarily stop Sceptile from using Dragon Dance, though he tends to use it before I can use Taunt anyway. Clear Smog is to undo the stat boosts from Dragon Dance, and as long as Sceptile remains taunted, I use Acid Spray to lower Sp. Defense. Strange Steam is when I have no other things to do, so I attack Sceptile directly. Yes, Clear Smog will also undo the Sp. Defense drops Acid Spray does, though the plan is to use it only after a Taunt, assumign Sceptile uses Dragon Dance; and right after he resets his stat drops. The problem is that Taunt will wear off while the barrier is still up, allowing him to use Dragon Dance again.
Yes, this is the same Galarian Weezing I used to fight Hisuian Samurott the Unrivaled.
Though this is one of the easier Tera Raid Battles because of Sceptile’s low durability and Unburden having no use, I did notice a LOT of struggling at the beginning and later on, caused largely by questionable choices. This is true for all 7-star Tera Raid Battle events though.

Not to mention Grovyle from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon! Also nice to see the Dragon Tera type referencing Mega Sceptile

Ah, you're absolutely right on both fronts. I forgot about both of those, even though I'm pretty sure we're getting Mega Sceptile again next year.

Sceptile has mostly physical moves because its special attacking movepool is extremely shallow. Aside from Grass and Dragon moves it pretty much only gets Focus Blast. Its physical movepool is much larger and it can use either Swords Dance or Dragon Dance to boost its lower Attack stat. The choice of Galarian Weezing is very smart, as it resists or is immune to everything Sceptile has except Thunder Punch, and its high Defense lets it take a beating. Clear Smog is quite helpful to get rid of Dragon Dance boosts too

I never saw anybody use Galarian Weezing except me--but as the event went on, I did start seeing people use Malamar, opening with Skill Swap to prevent Sceptile from using Dragon Dance for the rest of the raid. That move is what caused most of the failures I saw (barring one instance of a griefer).
I raised a Sceptile for the Blueberry Prologue event and either forgot or never noticed the imbalance between Sceptile's physical attacks and special attacks. That being said, I had him there partly as a special attacker and partly as a support Pokémon, and Tera Blast means I could select any other move type I wanted.

Interesting combination. One of our planned deployments is for Galarian Weezing in OHKO strats - can potentially work

If you're talking about Tera Raid Battles, the Pokémon in them are immune to one-hit KO moves.

@@Overhazard I’m not referring to OHKO moves but a combination which results in a move fainting the boss in one swoop after some setting up

@@7starraids I see. Good luck with that--short of the Stored Power strategies I've seen, I have not witnessed a 7-Star Pokémon taken down in one hit.

-I was wondering why Zacian was in its Hero of Many Battles form instead of its Intrepid Sword form until I realized that the latter form is part Steel-type and is weak to Earthquake.
-Huh, I didn't expect Annihilape to use Taunt on Sceptile on its first turn. Sceptile knows Dragon Dance, so it's a good way to prevent Sceptile from boosting its stats repeatedly.
-Looks like Corviknight was using Screech to lower Sceptile's DEF, then used the Iron Defense + Body Press combo to deal a lot of damage.
-I am used to seeing you play the support role in Tera Raid battles, so it was a bit surprising to see you go on the offense in this video.
-Amazing! No one on your team fainted! Everyone was prepared and knew what their roles were.

I was prepared to play support, but most of the roles were already covered, so I just went for Acid Spray, then Strange Steam.
I usually see Annihilape with a pure attacking role. They will either use nothing but Rage Fist, or they will use Bulk Up and then Rage Fist. I was kind of surprised to see them open with Taunt. They knew exactly how this raid worked.

This is basically the Meganium Raid. Either one person need to bring Clear Smog/ Haze / Malmar, or otherwise everyone must bring an Unaware Pokemon (or have a +6 defense). Since the conditions are very specific, you will have a lot of difficulties on online raids.
I used the Unaware + Psych Up (or Calm Mind) Clefable that I suggested in a previous comment. Since the timing for the Shield and nullifying wave are close to each other, the timing to copy Sceptile's stats can be tricky. Alternatively you can copy your allies stats.
I saw an Ally use Whimsicott which can use Cotton Guard, and resist all Sceptile's moves. Though if Leaf Blade crits that could be a disaster.

    • @Overhazard
      @Overhazard  หลายเดือนก่อน

And hence, I was the one supplying Clear Smog support, as most prone coming into these raids don’t know about how to deal with these stat boosts or are unprepared for the event.
