    One of the best vintage American amplifiers. Glad to own one ST 70 as well.

    I have an ST-70 Series II with solid state rectification and the bass is just incredible with diode design. Dynaco amps are treasures, the first time I heard the hologram of midrange I became obsessed and own several SCA-35's as well. It's all about that sweet delicate midrange that floats into your ears.

    First i thought ST-70 is better,but afer listening few times i came to the conclusion that ST-35 is better for me.Richer and more natural sound.ST-70 is just a tiny bit sharp.

    ST-70 sounded significantly better to me. Better spacial cues (room echo), tone, punch. Funny cause I've always read that the 35 was the better sounding amp and I also prefer the el84 sound.

    st 70 sounds a bit larger with more air and attack, maybe a bit lower noise floor as you can hear more space around instruments. the 35 has a sweeter tone, with the 70 being just a bit colder

    Probably nit-picking but a couple times I heard, "based on the original circuit" but the ST35 shown has a choke in it and the ST70 has different driver tubes (not 7199) so not exactly original - I suspect that copper thing on the ST70 is a silicon rectifier, as well? Maybe not, but it aint a 5AR4. Overall, however, nice video and very interesting. Thanks.

    Yes dynaco tube amps sound best with good tubes and original coupling capacitors, I see you are using amtrans caps, I can use that for my mk3s, those russian pio not good enough, and what coupling caps are for st35? For my st35 am still using original dynaco blue caps because they sound equally good.

    I know this sounds like a crazy idea, but I'd be interested to know whether you've ever tried your Dynaco ST35 with your Maggie LRS+?
    Of course it doesn't make sense with only 17.5wpc, and I was limited to using the 8 ohm tap, but there seemed to be plenty of power, along with a little more tube believabilty (in my 15' x 18' room).
    But like all things in audio, you never know' til you try it. Just a suggestion of course, but would like to hear your impressions, if you get a chance. Thx drD E.

    Love your channel. Went out and bought LRS+ after watching your video.
    I own original Dynaco ST35 and ST70 amps. The original ST35 is 8 and 16 ohm (not 4 and 8 as you say). However I noticed you have added a choke? on the chassis, or perhaps a transformer for the 4 ohm?
    P.S. I'm trying out the ST35 on the LRS+ right now, and am surprised there's plenty of volume.

    So I have a question, I'm about to pick up in a couple of weeks a completely refurbished pair of dynaco Mark 3 amps and before I decided on the purchase I went and auditioned them and they sounded great but I couldn't help but also get the feeling that they were a bit slow sounding. Almost kind of like instead of music flying out of the speakers at speed, it kind of oozed out slowly, if you can appreciate my analogy.
    Anyway I guess my question is do you notice that with the ST70 or the ST35?
    I'm like I said both of the Mark 3s have been completely refurbished and upgraded with new driver boards and new tubes.
    I don't know you know I don't necessarily have a problem with the presentation that I heard when I demoed them but I can't help but get the feeling though that ultimately they're going to be great for jazz and folk music and the like but when I want to listen to Black Sabbath, which I do from time to time, they won't sound as good.
    They were demoed with a pair of totem acoustic speakers whose model I cannot remember, and they had been hooked up to a audio research preamp whose model number I also can't remember.
    I'm going to be hooking them to a pair of Klipsch heresy 1 that have been refurbished and using a schiit freya preamp.

    • @drde4010
      @drde4010  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a few videos with the MkIII's that Kenny Russell did which my nephew in-law has. I checked my video history and it looks like I hadn't posted them but I'm checking again to be sure. Yes, the vintage sound is more laid back and slower sounding. If you prefer the newer sound that's more analytical, you may want to consider something newer but remember that the preamp such as the Schiit Freya will offset some of that but only "if" you are using the Freya Plus in tube mode. Passive and solid state mode will slow it further. I'm not familiar totem acoustic speakers so I can't say how they will or will not offset the sound of the MkIII's but I'm very familiar with all the Heresy lines and they would be a very good match for the MkIII's. Look at the first two posts of this link. I don't know how to fully agree with what Bob Latino is saying which I've copied here. Bob Latino says....
      "Understand also that when Hafler designed that circuit (and power supply) there was no digital music. Vinyl records were the signal source of the day and although theoretically they are capable of a 50 to 60 dB dynamic range most records rarely exceed 30 - 40 dB. CD music is capable of 90 dB. Dolby Digital up to 120 dB and DVD audio up to 144 dB" end quote.
      Make sure you read the first two posts in the link below. The issue for me is the differences between digital and vinyl are all over the map so I don't know how he could derive at that conclusion.
      dynacotubeaudio.forumotion.com/t465-traditional-driver-circuit-designs-versus-modern-all-triode-designs
      All the stuff Kenny does is based on the original circuits which is why I like his work but you really need to play the MkIII's with your own system and room acoustics to see how they'll match. My ST70 from Kenny sounds a bit slower and more laid back than the ST35. Both are great, so it's just gonna depend how you want to hear the music. In my opinion, you will have a pretty good match with the Heresy. It's really difficult to judge with different speakers in different rooms.

    • @Audiorevue
      @Audiorevue ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drde4010 I appreciate you taking the time to right such an extensive comment and I'm definitely going to get them and I believe the Freya, as you say, will make up some of the difference, plus of course the heresies.
      After I made that comment the other day I went and read up on the totem acoustics speakers and from everything I read about them most people seem to agree that they have a very warm sound to them, so I kind of get the impression that what sort of enhancing what was already there with the amplifiers in terms of sort of that slowed quality I already mentioned.
      Yes I do understand that room acoustics as well as having it set up with everything I already have will really generally impact ultimately what I hear. I just thought it might be a good idea to ask somebody who obviously seems so familiar with dynaco amplifiers.
      And considering I'm getting such a fantastic deal on a refurbished pair like I am, if I ultimately don't like them I can sell them on and definitely make a profit or at the very least get my money back.
