With regard to the sound of the Crown amp in this review, my comments are strictly based on the listening experiences using the Magnepan LRS Plus. I did not care for the amp while using it with my Klipsch Heritage speakers for several reasons. With the LRS Plus, it was a magic match. Perhaps it may be an impedance matter, not sure.

Listening through my Outback’s Harmon Kards and it comes through nicely. You can tell this combo sounds sweet. Very full and rich. Crisp but not piercing highs not fatiguingly bright. It’s through a phone but, damn!
The forums are saying 80Hz or 100Hz cut offs. I believe that 100 would be better after looking at the speakers slope at the bottom end, but either will be better. Of course, you will need to change the subs crossover to blend it right. Try both, and let us know
Do you hear any hiss/noise from this amp? Why I'm asking, I have very sensitive speakers.
@@JezJerzy22 with my Klipsch heresy there’s a low but audible noise, but this is not conclusive because it could be something in my electrical system.
Why do you don't play to hear the music to know it's quality..really your commentary don't make us believe what you say Sound is very nice, unless we hear the music and measure it's quality... without playing the speaker what hell are you doing with this video to ear money from this viewers.
Just put my order in with Kenny. I’ve been eyeing an ST-70 for a long time for my collection but, never pulled the trigger. Now I’m going down the tube hifi rabbit hole. Never owned a tube unit but, I’ve done my research on the Dynaco. I’m glad I waited and found your page. Kenny’s work looks to be unmatched. Until I can get a tube preamp, I’m going to use my McIntosh MA6200 for the ST-70 as a preamp. It’s Solid State. This is a topic with not too much info. Most say the tube preamp is the match which makes sense. Some say it’s fine and will enhance the tube amp. Others say there might be an issue. I’m wondering until I can get the PAS3 from Kenny in the future, how will this combo affect the true tube sound. My vintage McIntosh is very warm. I hope it complements the ST-70. Tube power amp with a solid state preamp. Any thoughts on this topic?
Really glad to hear this. These are amazing amplifiers which I will keep indefinitely because I think I've listened long enough to realize that this is the sound signature I love. Kenny does truly amazing work, his soldering and wiring organization is absolutely impeccable. What speakers are you mating this with?

@@drde4010 I’m going to use my vintage JBL- L 100 centuries. I do have a set of Ohm Walsh 2’s that are 4 ohms. I also have a set of Canton Ergo 70’s @ 4 ohms to roll. However, I really want to use my 1972 Ohm F’s but they take a big amp to make them sing. Not sure if the Dynaco would power them. They would be the perfect speaker for a tube amp however they’re not very efficient. Rated 3/4 ohm. They’re my babies. My pioneer SX-1010 is the perfect match for them.
@@stinkenstine then Kenny’s ST70 will be a nice match for what you have to choose from in my opinion. I was going to suggest the Nobsound volume control for now until you get a preamp. You could do a solid state preamp. I think the PAS would eventually be the best match as it mates perfectly. The Nobsound will lose a few db in gain but it’s super clean sounding.
Here’s a link on the Nobsound and I’ve done videos on the other preamps too. th-cam.com/video/pImUTtV_ilU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1Ija7y670Z2s_rum

How does this stack up to your ST-70?
@@stinkenstine They’re quite different. I like the hefty bass coming from the SX950. The tonality of horns sound nice in the ST70. Both are quite warm sounding. They are both very nice.
@@drde4010 looking to Kenny to build me an ST-70. I chose the Mullard’s but, I’m hearing what you’re saying on Nestone tubes you originally got with yours. More holographic. I’ll ask his opinion. If you ever get a chance to listen to a Pioneer SX-1010, I think you’ll be blown away. I own one pushing a set of 1972 Ohm F’s and the pioneer makes them sound glorious. That’s a receiver you must get your hands on.
@@stinkenstine I’m glad to hear that. Let me know how it all goes.
@@drde4010 I’ll have to post a video on my page. Haven’t posted in a long while
Probably nit-picking but a couple times I heard, "based on the original circuit" but the ST35 shown has a choke in it and the ST70 has different driver tubes (not 7199) so not exactly original - I suspect that copper thing on the ST70 is a silicon rectifier, as well? Maybe not, but it aint a 5AR4. Overall, however, nice video and very interesting. Thanks.
working behind the studio audio console for so many years on all kind of programs and live musical shows i just can tell that this f18 things sound exactly as it comes out from the mixers , sound is thick as reality... still looking por the best speaker .. this is really close..

Wow a audio review with music... Brilliant!
If tye LRS+ were the same price in Europe as in the States, I would buy them, but they are a pack MORE than TWICE the price here!!! 😮
Wow! sorry to hear that.
Thanks for sharing. Nice vintage system! Not chasing resolution, but musicality on this one, i appreciate your perspective. Any digital noise pickup from the CD player to the turntable? Easily defeated my powering the CD off during vinyl replay. Thats what i do anyway. So you also have an OB system? Agreed that Music is an emotional & spiritual experience. If the system gets these reactions its good enough, right? (Let the designers & robots listen to measurements;-)

I have two 1971 JBL 6020 200 watt amps to drive my subs at 70 pounds each I'm pretty sure these things could power the ISS. I've given up trying to understand watts because they are not all created equally.

Peace! No exaggeration in your vid.The thrift store that I frequent usually slaps $40 on any and every silver face. I walked in and spotted the 950 and was ready to pay the 40. The unit was $19.99. Besides the dust, looks like it just came out of the box. Inside out. I'm a Sansui fan but I love my 950 with cds through aux. Check out this album, Dorothy Ashby's Afro Harping.
@@harrymuhammad9835 I actually have that album and absolutely love it! Smoken deal on the 950 jeeez.
I have old RCA tubes they sound great in the ST70. I have an original circuit and a buddy had the upgraded front board. Both sound great with Heresy, Cornwall and k-horns. Full body sound.
Just use a PS2 tv style remote and dongle. Works perfectly
The effect of adding the sub to the Magnapans is amazing and you can hear it even through the video. Without the sub, the piano is very present and in the room but the bass is in the background. Adding the sub brings the bass player into the room as well. Amazing what a small sub can do.
I was going to buy the Forte 1 in 1987 BUT got an absolute killer deal on Polk SDA-1c's. Never regretted the Polks but always yearned for the Forte's and 37 years later I just picked up a pair of Forte IV's. I haven't played them yet played I'm hoping they make me happy. the SDA1C's have new crossovers and upgraded tweeters. The soundstage on those SDA's is unmatched IMO. Anyway....I blew the 5,000.00 on the new Klipsch Forte so we'll see.
@@mikerieck306 gosh! I was actually looking at those same polks what a coincidence! Get back and let me know how they differ to the forte. Thanks for chiming it! 👍😊
Please name 3 sonic features that the phono stage in the PAS3 preamp does exceptionally well. Your video as it is does not provide enough information for me to get interested in this preamp or to know why it is special.
Nice, no-nonsense system. Great choice of music. I have never owned a DAC and never figure I will. I guess that the designers aren't going to put some junk in a CD player they create. DACs are probably a great way to suck more money out of audiophiles.
Great stuff but Kenny does not ship to. the UK so :-( .
@@Book-Mark yea it’s risky for independent hifi builders and it’s too bad because his amps are my favorite in the world and the prices are not like premium brands costing thousands more.
OB sounds amazing, the other 2 sound recessed and muddy, bass sounds disconnected
Pretty nice to hear the open baffle design against the others. I genuinely feel the other were "BOXY" muffled in comparison. The Forte was sounding better than the Heresy IV's (over my office speaker!) still the size you have to go up to for a decent open baffle is a factor I'm fearing will make them less obatinable for me :(
Super Test!😊Thank you
It is weird yea

@@drde4010 You're welcome! I thought it best to let you know 🙈😂
Bruh, I have the Forte 1’s. I probably overpaid. I bought a used set, in pretty good condition for $1,250. I too power with a small 2.3W amp from Decware. Mine are a little lean in the low end, so I pair with a sub and that combo sounds phenomenal. I’m looking to have mine reveneered to match the African Paduck wood on my amp.
Again well said. Subscribed even though i am not a tube listener. Thanks
I watched that review a few weeks ago. I thought the review was really good and well thought out. it crossed my mind about the set up details, but I figured its his video and he should do it the way he wants. Maybe leaving it a mystery was the intent. :)
He was reviewing amps, not speakers? why do you feel you need to know what speakers he used? Maby he is happy with this speakers and try to find the best amp for them in his system?
The catch is.. you cant review an amp, without revealing what speakers you are using in the process! Much less if he is reviewing it with only one set! It's the overall system in the end that gave the sound as it is! I would not be bothered if he review that amp for him and his components as is.. But for Christ sake he spewed nonsense and general judgements on YT based only on his set up 🤷🏼
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. There's absolutely nothing wrong with his choice of speakers if he's happy with them and had I been part of their group, I too would have most likely concluded the same things they did. That's not at all the case I'm making and I apologize if I'm not making this clear. The reviewers own choice of speakers is all that matters for "himself". What about the end-users who are trying to decide between the two amps who are using different speakers or plan to use different speakers? The reason I'm saying that speakers are an extremely important factor is because most listeners who buy tube amps, mate them with highly efficiency speakers. It's absolutely fine that the listeners chose the amps they chose, the results are fine for the speakers "they" used. The issue is that the dynamic details that two of the five listeners liked can easily be altered just by the speakers alone. Heritage speakers by Klipsch are extremely popular speakers for tube owners and now open baffles are also becoming highly popular due to low costs combined with high efficiency. So, what can easily happen is that what sounds dynamic using a VTA ST70 with Clements speakers can also sound equally dynamic using the more mild, laid back original ST70 circuit with dynamic speakers like the Heritage for example or very revealing open baffle speakers. If I'm an end-user trying to make a choice and a reviewer says they like the dynamics better in a VTA and I'm not informed as to why that conclusion may have been the case, then I'm not getting the real reasons why. Amir's crap review of the VTA ST70 is a prime example of misinformation. The viewer is going to walk away from Amir's review with the perception that an VTA can't deliver tight bass. Well guess what the viewer is not be told? The viewer is not being told that Amir's choice of speakers is exactly the reason he got crappy bass results. Anyone who knows anything about tube amps, knows you don't mate them to low efficiency Infinity speakers like Amir so stupidly did. Amir should know better, but he just wanted to trash another tube amp and by not telling you what speakers he used, he got crappy bass results and that's what he doesn't explain to his audience. So instead of educating them, he's misleading them. It can also work the other way around. If I have speakers like my Dynaco A10's which have very little detail, the VTA will be the better choice in my opinion. If I take the same VTA and mate it to an open baffle speaker, now I have excessive detail that sounds more harsh. All I'm saying is for reviewers to help viewers understand it can work both ways depending on the speakers used. So, in essence, the choice of speakers plays a very crucial role and as such, should be disclosed to help viewers make a more informed decision.
Cute pooch…
Thank you, that's Koda which means "friend" and "little bear". He's 53 pounds and 2 years old.
