Thanks Eck … I enjoyed this, Inter Milan was also my first European match & my 2 biggest memories of that night were Liam Brady getting absolute pelters every time he touched the ball & for me a man of the match performance from John McClelland. Unfortunately the Greek Restaurant you refer to is now closed
Thanks for that, my friend. Appreciate you taking the time. And a very happy Gers-in-Europe big Four Oh too. I was talking to someone else on twitter yesterday who also made their European debut that night - what a game to start with. Left a few us all addicted tio Uefa competition, I'd imagine. Aye I think Brady was being spat at when he took corners. I didn't get it. I remembered Inter being brilliant and kinda toying with us a bit - letting us have our night, so to speak. But then I found footage of the game on TH-cam and we absolutely pounded them all night. We were so physical i was wincing at some of the tackles. They were definitely up against it. Gutted to hear about the Greek restaurant. As I was recounting that story I realised I'd met the bloke before Covid. Horrendous for small businesses. That's a real shame - such a nice bloke and obviously a brilliant restaurant.
Thanks for this Alec ..a great relief with last night's showing wasn't it ? Fearing the worst but getting greedy with " we could win this " as the game wore on . Agree about Tav ..time waits for no man and Dujon deserves his shot at right back. Can we play like this again on Sunday ..a terrible pun but it's in the lap of the Gods. The more you reminisce about European adventures and foreign teams it's like being transported back in time to the days of World Soccer Magazine and that great old sportswriter Keir Radnage (spelling not sure about). Keep the good work .
No such thing as a terrible pun in this place, George - you have at it, mate. I challenge you to come up with anything cornier than me. Outstanding. And, yup, feel same about the Teds last night. Perfect description of how I felt - combo of relief and frustration melting into a big mass of pride. Aye, I'm really interested to see how we get on on Sunday against a side who've also played a big Euro game on Thursday night. Hoping that lets us cut loose a wee bit for a change in one of these continental hangover matches. Absolutely zero coincidence you should be reminded of Keir Radnedge and World Soccer. That mag and that man were to me in the 90s, what 2000AD and Tharg were in the 70s & early 80s. There's a few dozen copies - some in a World Soccer binder - sat just behind me while I do these pods, and a couple of the books on the shelves are edited by Radnedge. Icon of the game!
Not a bad transition for our newest manager and a new downsized new team that in the big scheme of things cost peanuts, AND STILL keeping our European adventures exciting & giving well established sides/managers problems. I can assure anyone who is saying, aye but "we used to be better", that in my long, long, long experience supporting the team, I've definitely seen us a lot worse over the years. I'm sure most older fans like myself would confirm that. I'm not disagreeing that there's a lot of room for improvement, but neither is the manager.🔴⚪🔵
Preach, IamNoone. Preach! Absolutely spot-on, sir. There's so much "if it ain't perfect it's the worst thing ever" patter around these days. I get people are impatient for silverware to start rolling in but until we get major cash dropped on us it will only take longer if we rip up this project prematurely. European respectability was a Rangers obsession during Murray's 20 years - weird to see many of our fans eschew it because everything being shite is more straightforward.
@@FatEck1999 I'm no preacher, just a devotee to your pods. They've become my go to Rangers resource. So forgive my often poorly worded, clumsy responses and reflections, which pale against your own oratory & nous, although none the less heartfelt.

We hardly gave them a sniff at our goal which was a pleasant surprise. A very organized display. Dessers lead the line well. Old school ref let the game flow. I'm usually confident of beating Hearts at Ibrox so hopefully a win to take us to the international break. I was at the Inter and AEK games you mentioned. Brilliant v Inter but the 1994 AEK defeat is ne of my worst memories, a dreadful performance. Enjoyed your podcast.
@@bigphil6082 many thanks, Big Phil. Yeah that AEK defeat was as bad on the eye as it was on the morale. When we brought out the violet away kit again a few seasons back it triggered the PTSD. But that Greek memory made Thursday night all the sweeter. Hope you're right re Jambos. I'd like a restful two weeks.
Much appreciated, Andy - thanks for giving it your time again, mate👍

Great show as always Alec, Rangers showed heart and drive enjoyed the game, good draw wee bit luck we could have won, been reading about the Greeks at Thermopylae this week must have been a good omen, WATP, will look for you when I am at the game Sunday, looking forward to hearing your report after the game 🙏🇬🇧👍
Thanks very much for that, Pete - appreciate you giving the pod your time again, mate. Great last night, wasn't it. Aye, spot-on - heart and drive and almost a win. Good reading on the Spartans - I never got past the film! Felt as if Barron and Raskin were our equivalent of the Hot Gates at Thermopylae: "You'll have to get through us first. Doesn't matter how big ye are - we'll make it painful for ye!" Bet they're both rested on Sunday😆😆 Have a great weekend, Sir!

Love it, Colin. We've navigated the song of the Sirens and now we're about to smite the Cyclops of Hearts and... man, I'm gonnae miss the Greek puns. Great fun. @@ja-ks8dhVery kind of you, ja. Thanks for checking out the pod again and the faith in my writing abilities, sir. But I fear it might just be 1000 pages of "all work and no roast chicken makes Eck a thin boy..."
Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes. Sorry to point out fake news, but the trojans lost by accepting the Greek horse, Paris and Hector only had one uzi between them, and the battle was lost as Hector's sten gun kept jamming. You surprisingly failed to mention Homer's succesful career as a referee and his officiating in Albion, 1966.
Great listen Eck, reminded me of my school pal who one day refused to stand up when the headmaster came into the class, he pretended not to notice his entrance but paid the price after the headmaster left, as our teacher, Noddy Cavan, beat the absolute shite out of him. Later, my mate, who's Dad, was a Shop Steward in a local Joinery Works, told me, "I've been taught to believe no man is better than me." We laughed at the time, but the older I get, the more profound I feel that moment in 1983 to be. Ps sort of lost touch with my pal who for the best part is a hen-pecked, ganja smoking hermit these days 😆

Sorry for your old pal. Getting beat up by an adult in a position of care when he was a kid would do that to someone, I suppose. What a shame for the guy. Wish his dad had sorted out the teacher. Sorry I stoked those memories, mate. Ganja talk just reminds me (a) it's absolutely rife at Rangers games at Hampden over the last few seasons. Neutral Hampden games. As if the MyGers ballot only allocates tickets to dope heads. And (B) I can't smoke dope. Tried several times in my 20s as it seemed cheaper and more chilled than my lager bingeing tendencies but just could not inhale. A friend even made me cannabis cookies but I just couldn't feel it. Although I do seem to have had the munchies ever since😁 I do wonder if Jack Butland thinks he's better than every man but if he's best fighter in his year that'll do for me.💪
