Plumber's tape has been around for decades longer than teflon tape. Plumber's tape was probably used to support plumbing under the house. It is usually galvanized steel of a light gauge with holes running down the length of the tape so that it can be nailed to joists in order to support the plumbing, after being wrapped to support the piping and then nailed to the wood beams. It can be very handy. Teflon tape is used to seal the helical gap that exists in NPT (National Pipe Tapered) threads. NPT won't seal no matter how tight it is tightened if you don't use sealing tape or paste.
You would think Lowes would know Teflon tape from Plumber's tape.
this is thread tape. plumbers tape is a metal strip with holes in it along its length.

Question? I just bought a new shower head for my washroom. I put the new shower head on. But I just found this about plumbers tape. Do I really need to apply the plumbers tape? It’s on tight and it’s not leaking.Thanks!!

That is Teflon tape, not "plumbers' tape".

White tape is for water, yellow is for gas line. Apply tape clockwise not counterclockwise or when u screw pipe on it will come off.
Plumber's tape is not Teflon tape! Plumber's tape is a brand metal with different size holes in it.
