If he did not waste his life drinking and smoking opium to punish himself for his sins, he might have easily fought off all the assassins and even the final villainous Manchu General as well.

I speak cantonese, and watch cantonese movies quite a bit, rather than Mandarin. so the pinyin is not my strong suite. I want to say the General tried to avoid a fight with the Beggar in respects of his bravery and skills. Also, at the same time he would prefer a fair fight.
