they most likely did not have a filter if you have ever in your life change your filter your evaporator will not look this way. This is by far the most extreme case I've ever seen
I would love to see the year-over-year energy bill before and after this cleaning. Not to mention improved health, and comfort. NEGLECT is how homes get to be sick homes.
I’m in sac too, real cool. I was just told I’ll need a new coil and condenser, Upon looking for advice on Nextdoor, I came across a neighbor who’s in the trades and he’s going to show me how to do this. He doesn’t think my R22 unit doesn’t necessarily need to be replaced yet, he believes this to be my problem. For all I know, my coil hasn’t been cleaned for 40 years. This is going to be FUN. Nice to know you guys are around.
Mine wasn't quite that bad (my sweater was only 1/8" thick) but thank you for showing how to clean these out. Super easy, and now part of my spring routine before A/C season.
I have this same problem. I am a certified tech and want to do this myself for my mother in law's place. The problem is, the landlord keeps getting in the way of every service tech that has been nice enuff to come out. She's sabotaging the repair. This is a 2 ton evap with a fixed metering device. If I remove the cover and the condensation drain line outta the way, will the Delta plate look like this one? Because of so, I'll do this myself to help my mother. Thank you.
Watch Out ...... that was going to be my question. (I will use cardboard) While my husband handles his company, I’m responsible for the house. Today, I thought I’d check the a/c out. Do you need to treat the outside of the coils??? I want to pull the blower and clean it but it’s getting HOT and I’m worried I won’t get it all done. This is just gross!!!! We move in 5.5yrs ago, the house is 40yrs. I’m pretty confident previous owners never had it clean. I hope to breathe better.
Winter’s Soul the one in my apartment is caked and disgusting, not even a filter in it. I want to clean it but damn thing is so disgusting from (probably years of) other people I’d rather move to a house just for a cleaner ac unit hahaha
We had an H-coil like that in the attic on a rental we purchased. How the unit ran like that I had no idea. The tenant never complained about the low air flow or smell. The house had some interior damage so we just didn’t make the repairs till they moved. When they moved enough hair came out of that coil to make two dogs. We even had to put the garden hose on it and let it run out the drain. The nasty smell turned fresh and clean immediately. Pretty much the same thing just horizontal.
Oh my word. You did an excellent job of cleaning those coils. I"m afraid to see what mine might look like, since my ac has been freezing up. Commendable job.
Once I had a customer with a "permanent type air filter"; every two months she took it out and reversed it! The evaporator was fully stopped up. It cost her plenty!
THANK YOU -- this is the most thorough VIDEO on this topic. Everyone else talks a lot and I have no idea what they're talking about on what to do with the cleaning!
What is the spray you used for the evaporator coil? My furnace looks similar to this one and the guy wants $500 just to brush it clean. Do you have to worry about dust falling inside the unit?
yes, you want to cover your heat exchanger with something if its open at the top (underneath the coils). I used an old filter that I cut down to fit over the space, brushed, vacuumed up the loose stuff, sprayed with a lawn hand sprayer, rinsed with a separate hand sprayer filled with hot water, brushed again, then rolled/folded up the old filter and took it out.
That is probably what mine looks like. I went from heat in the winter that didn't stink to Air conditioning that smells awful. It produces cold air, but it is 20 year old unit. I have a labrador that looses more harm than I thought one ever grew. I sprayed the whole upper side with bleach water. I wasn't aware that Triangle shape sheet metal comes off the front. I will take it back apart and clean the under side. I have never ran mine without a filter though so it probably isn't that bad.
Cool video. I have a customer that owns a candy store, the RTU return is literally above the cotton candy machine, the first PM service I ever did the evaporator looked just like this job but it was cotton candy and dust...
Honestly mine is about as bad. Just got the place but the stuff on the coil was more like a caked on layer of gunk. The home had some renovations done, but a super, super cheap filter. Its the cheapest one you could buy at a home depot. This is what the previous home owners had been using. There was a box with 2 more so I tossed them all out. Used a stiff AC brush and Weber coil cleaner , along with some concrobium, but there is still leftover gunk stuck between the fins. Planning to use a mister to mist the concrobium in the ac ducts. Praying all goes well.
Ok. But what if you can’t get to the underbelly of the evap coil in order to vacuum the dirt away. That’s the type of unit I have. All I could do was let all the ice melt away, put the door back on and hope for the best. Will simply just spraying the coils from the top with evap cleaner work or is it time to call a pro?
Not if you go up and down in the direction of the fins. Unlike what this clown occasionally did and went side to side and bent the heck out of a bunch of fins.
The renter used to live in New Jersey and he complained to me that he had never seen water leaking from ac unit. After I got fix the ac run again, I told him that Florida is a hot weather if you decided to move down here, no comparison.
I have mobile home and had 950.00 work on furnace. I thought maybe the rebuild would get it working. I changed the run capacitor on fan motor and checked paperwork and was charged 150.00 for a 9 dollar capacitor, ikes. So before he comes out going to clean condensor coil and evaporater coil in furnace. It's a coleman furnace and evap coil is at bottom. So hopefully the side I can see will be the only side dirty. It's a coleman in a trailer. The cover on top is been hot and melted lost its shape not sure why. Maybe u it can be put in working order. Like to sell the mobile home and get Ac working for couple years after sold or hopefully much longer.
When you don’t change a filter it gets blocked restricting airflow even more so that less air can get to the coil. What looks like what happened was that they didn’t use a filter period
Even with filter it still got this filthy ? Did it have filter at all ? My lines are frozen both outside and inside ones . And where is my evap coil ? Usually on the bottom or might be top ? Thanks for any help . Saw another video with spray cleaner bought at Lowe's .
The spray basically loosened the crud to vac easily. I do the same. After I clean it, I’ll give it another spray and when it sweats, it’ll wash out the remainder crud and basically rinse itself clean into the drip tray and out.
I gotta do my girlfriends coil today and in the other videos they pulled the coil all the way out. This way looks safer but harder to access... now Im not sure which way I'll go! I'm guessing her coil is the one that has to be pulled out.
This is what I imagine mine looks like, as I have 2 pet wookies myself. I haven't looked yet, but am psyching myself up to what to expect. I am going to tackle this-this evening as I just received my electric bill and it is up almost $45.00 from the same time last year and up $85.00 from 2 months ago.
I bought an old ac and the evap coils looked just like this I was like how was this thing even working which it was somehow but works much better now :)

Same here Ema. I've been searching all over Google trying to find a video of someone cleaning my type of AC (Goodman u-42). My AC has all of the lines going straight into the panel that accesses the coil... So it seems like I can't clean the coil without unhooking all the lines! This video is the closest I've seen but it doesn't seem like my panel can bend like the one in this video
@@nOObZ9465 i have found some like mine so it isnt uncommon. i still havent cleaned mine but after closer inspection it looks like the metal enclosure has a removable panel in front that i can use for access without disconnecting lines. have you removed the tape to check for screws? my best uninformed advice would be to remove the tape to see if it reveals a way to take apart the enclosure.
My sister's system is filthy!! Both trunk lines are dusty but the return line literally has an inch+ of dust and hair covering the bottom. I try to do what I can for her but trying to clean 20ft of square trunk lines has me questioning the best way to do this and God only knows how bad the coil in the heater is there wasn't a door or any way to inspect it.
Yeah no problem they have what's called evaporator coil spray. And they even sell it at Lowe's and Home Depot. just make sure you read the directions on the can some of those you have to rinse off and some of them are rinse free
Can somebody please tell me could this be a contributing factor due to my portable aircon filling up with water fast or is that because it’s Australia and extremely hot %100 of the time
Ugh- need a question answered and I can’t find it online. The inside part of my AC (in front of where I slide the filter in) is really dirty and falling apart. The inspector said it was because the entire unit was old so that was expected). He said I would need to replace it within a year or two. In the meantime, I bought a peel and stick insulation mat and cut it up to cover the shredded old insulation. Is that ok or not? I think the exposed shredded insulation was causing all this dust in my house.
I bet it’s not freezing up now😁. You’re a better man than I. I’d have tried to get them let me pull it and then if I had to clean it, used their garden hose and back flushed that POS. Great video!
We tried to clean the A coil on my Son's Rheem furnace last year, it's a down flow and the way it's designed you can't get into the coil like you should be able to. the furnace trips the high limit all the time but the air flow out of the floor registers seems strong. wouldn't you think the air flow would be weak if the A coil is dirty enough to cause the furnace cabinet to be very warm to the touch? anyone have any suggestions. now it's winter time, can we clean the coil with coil spray cleaner in a can in this cold weather?s Thanks.
I bought a house from some folks that had 5 small dogs inside and same thing pressures were good but a/c not working I took inspection plate off and it looked like a custom made winter wool coat over the a coil that was 1/4 thick dog hair. Cleaned it off and house was 65 on a 100 degree day
I need help please! Air conditioning is blowing cool, but not cold air. The evaporator coils inside the home are cool to the touch, not freezing over either. Seems like there could be an airflow issue, peeked inside of the evaporator coils there's no dust, looks brand new both inside and outside. My coils look like the Goodman 3 to 3.5 Ton 20 in. Wide Air Conditioner Uncased Coil I'm very puzzled why the evaporator coil is cool to the touch but not getting cold air in the home. When the unit is turned off the evaporator coil is warm, I'm not sure if this is normal functioning or a problem. Please respond back, much appreciation, thanks!
Turns out the heating element was stuck on, just popped in a new sequencer and the issue was fixed. Must have had a bad sequencer for a long time (10 - 15 years) the air conditioning is too cold at 77 degrees now, used to have it on 72 degrees and it still wasn't cool enough.
I work on heat pumps but I have two gas packs at my house. Here in the South you don't have those troubles with gas packs..... it can be frustrating but the next time hire a professional technician when you start to have trouble. It will save you a lot of money in the long run buddy.
You can get a similar effect if you do not change the air filter. When we moved into our house the previous owner (college girl with no knowledge of how to care for things) had been changing the filter at the return until eventually the air flow was so bad that she left it out completely. She never saw the 2nd filter right in front of the evaporator coil and it was so caked with dirt, dust and hair that the AC tech first thought there was a Freon issue when he started his tests. He noticed the low air flow and I showed him the return and he saw the 2nd filter and how badly caked it was. After removing that 2nd filter the difference in cooling was the difference between night and day. Cooing was way better and power bills dropped.
What kind of screw are you using to get the bolts out? Also, a headband flashlight is pretty useful so you can see clearly everywhere you move your head.
I would of seen if i could stuff a towl or something below first so pounds of shit is not landing on the fan below i suppose you clean that after anyways and the bottom of the furnace.
Great video. I really like being the third technician on a call like that. Amazing how a dirty evap coil mimics a low charge. I clean them and then usually remove refrigerant.
LOL 🤣 All of it is due to not changing the filter. I love the customers that say they do change their filters, only to find a rung on there evap coil. LOL, great job!
I was doing it the hard way from underneath and having to wear protective gear to protect my face and eyes. Never agin though for I live in an Apartment and its NOT my job. THere is black mold on my coils. This is very common in TEXAS and NOBODY uses pan Tabs...ever.
After you removed the "sweater" that was matted onto the fins, why didn't you brush it before spraying on the coil cleaner? It just seems like the larger dust pieces and hair would come off more easily while dry than once they are wet. At least that is what I have seen on all the other videos I watched. Also, at the end you went in there with a shop vac...even vacuuming across rather than just up and down with the direction of the fins, and it looks as though the nozzle bent some of the fins. I have always understood that you had to work very delicately so as not to bend them.
I want to know what brand unit this was! Mine gets like two pieces of dust on it and it won’t get cold anymore it’s ridiculous.... how’d that thing even run that long!
Very enlightening! Now I know what needs to be done at my house. Thanks!

What did you spray in there?
That gum was plugging a leak in the coil from the last tech. You going to be back soon for low charge. ;)
What spray cleaner did you use? Were all the brushes you used wire brushes?
What kind of screw are you using to get the bolts out?
Also, a headband flashlight is pretty useful so you can see clearly everywhere you move your head.
Normally, they are hex head screw, 1/4".
@@HsingSun some of them are 5/16" too lol
In addition I used a air comb blowing back through from the other side and then used blast a coil at the end.
God I absolutely love the sound of the brush brushing the coils.
when do you know when you have o remove the evaporator to clean it outside?
Can I ask what kind of brush did you use?
I would of seen if i could stuff a towl or something below first so pounds of shit is not landing on the fan below i suppose you clean that after anyways and the bottom of the furnace.
I cleaned one a few weeks ago. Somehow it was packed with cat litter and hair. Fins were falling apart. It was disgusting
How does this happen? Are they not running a filter? Would this happen even with regular filter changes?
That's typical in a rental with pets. Filter gets left out at some point and the coil becomes the filter, collecting all the fur and dust.
Yes, and if the filter register is near the kitchen, it will suck up all of grease in the air and will end up on the coil.
Great video. I really like being the third technician on a call like that. Amazing how a dirty evap coil mimics a low charge. I clean them and then usually remove refrigerant.
All Hours Maintenance are you in Florida?
What’s the aerosol spray?
Mine gets like two pieces of dust on it and it won’t get cold anymore it’s ridiculous.... how’d that thing even run that long!
i want to do mine... what is best cleaner to use? thax
what's a filter?
What kind of coil cleaner do you use. The manufacturer states that te best method to clean the coil is just water.
how old was that system???
You give a new definition to hair plug. What is your service coverage area? How far south do you travel?
What spray is that
Nice how much does this cost?
How much you guys charge for this service?
Would that condenser coil cleaner work for indoor coil?
