    I did the same thing.... Went from about 3000 down to about 200 games. Stuff I actually play.
    I switched to PC gaming recently so main stuff I collect are exclusives I have a hard time playing on PC or cannot find.
    With the $ from selling I kept half and invested in previous metals for the future... For family and kids.
    I love gaming but stepping back from my collection it was over whelming and caused a lot of anxiety. I truly understand where you are coming from. Nice video.

    Same, I started collecting back in 2016 and just spam bought collector editions for games I knew I would never play. Everyday I look at my shelf full of dust and games I have no interest in. Also made me feel like crap that I'm wasting money. This year I sold about 70% of my collection and I am so happy about it.
    After I moved to PC gaming I started buying everything I want to play on steam and ONLY buy physical CD and collector editions for games I truly love and I think that are masterpiece and worth putting on my shelf.

    WOW! This was one of my favorite videos I watched in a long time. I've just started collecting video games and this video reminded me of so many very important aspects of getting into it.
    Now I just questioned a lot of purchases I already made ... size really doesn't matter. Looking at a wall of games is impressive but mental health and happiness are way more important than the lust for owning games just for the sake of it or because it's generally considered a classic.
    Play and collect games you ACTUALLY enjoy!
    Thanks for this video it helped me a lot!

    Honestly my friend and I were talking about doing the same thing, widdling down our collections to games that we really care about instead of stuff we got just to get it; it's a good thing you're taking steps to simplify and better your life - anybody who gets mad at that doesn't understand there's more to life than just stuff

      Exactly. For months I looked at it and realized how much dust they were collecting. Do I need 50 Wii Games I'll never touch? 150 N64 games that I'll never play? No. What I need is a solid future that'll be stress free.

    What makes a great collection isn't the size of it. Its the mentality of the collector and how they chose what to put in their collection. I have seen some collection in person that had about 4.5k games and wasn't impressed. I have seen a collection of 100 games that were the collectors favorite games that were in immaculate condition and he knew everything in great detail about each game.

    Quite the change in mentality since last year (in fact the "up next" was your video about "would you sell"), but priorities in life far outweigh a bunch of video games for sure. Good on you for making the call to make yourself happier!

    This was a really good video. I have personally gone through changes in the way I look at the hobby as well. I know the feeling of selling your collection, 2 years ago I've been through that, years ago I was struggling financially, so I had no choice but to sell my whole collection, there are some games that were played & some that weren't. I remember collecting retro games was time & money consuming. Even till now without my retro collection I'm still a happy man.

    I respect your decision to part ways with a big chunk of your collection. It's not the easiest thing to do, but I like that you focus on the quality of the games versus the quantity. Everyone has their own mindset, when it comes to collecting, but having a large quantity of games can be overwhelming. For me, having a large number of games is meaningless if I don't like them, because we all know there will be lots of filler titles, or find time to enjoy the ones you like. Focusing on improving your life is far more important than gaming. Keep up the good work.

      After thinking about it over a few days, being overwhelmed with it was definitely what killed it for me. I had so much shit, and i'm the type of person who can't be in messy or unorganized rooms. I couldn't enjoy what I owned.

    • @TheCoOpCollector
      @TheCoOpCollector  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't regret it at all. Maybe it's because I sold it all in bulk. Sometimes I do regret making sales back in the day, but then remember I replaced it with something else. Game money stayed game money at the end of the day.

  • @ilovemybeard3394
    @ilovemybeard3394 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Way to go man...you're doing great and keep on truckin.
    I used to have a ton of video games in my collection, and let's just say I had some really bad shady friends that either use me or steal from my collection...they even took my imported Nintendo 3DS! Half of my imported Japanese games are missing as well and I worked hard to get those rare games because they don't come around often.
    It seems that every friend I make, they want to steal something from me whether it is a blu ray movie, DVD, Video Games or anything that they can find in my room...I swear to God every friend that I have made stabs me in the back and end up being thieves and the reason why I still don't have friends to this day.
    This is my personal story on why I stopped collecting because why waste the money when someone is going to steal from me? So I decided to live the frugal route and the minimal lifestyle of having less material things because I don't take possessions with me to the grave.

  • @Kappanoname
    @Kappanoname 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I was moving to another state on my own, had a collection about 200-300 so games (yeah a lot of people won't say that's a real collection) and i sold 95% of it.
    now that i'm visiting my parent's house i'm unboxing stuff that has been sitting there un-used and un-missed for over a year and flushing out even more of it, sure i won't get much for them, but someone that is able to enjoy the stuff for the first time or multiple times would be better to than for me to have things i don't need or ever plan on using again, it's literally just free money to me.
    I came to the conclusion a year ago after i was working 70-80 hours a week and maybe sleeping 30-35 ? (also was going to college part time btw) i was too busy to game and i would just hop on my gaming PC and zone out to some music when i did.
    I downsized similair to you, the games that sat got sold, and the ones that are truly special were kept, but i'm getting rid of multiple consoles (i have a DS lite and OG3D, 2DS, etc. that weren't needed cause i could just use my N3DS, and also got rid of a GBASP cause i could just buy a gameboy player or emulate them later, same with the gamecube games, i could just dolphin emulate since all my valuables were sold 10 or so years ago when i was a kid and it'd be wayyyy too expensive to re-cooperate things like FE path of radiance, chibi robo, cubivore, etc. and all the first party titles that shot up dramatically in price. If i want to play i'll just emulate while on the comfort of my PC and being able to play them in better definitions, with music, etc. we're also fortunate enough to have the virtual console, the retro boy consoles and plug and plays like the (S)NES mini(s) ;)
    yeah man it feels a lot better to only keep the things that you truly will use, and i will be re-buying games like path of radiance, but just not in the near future, or unless a good oppurtunity arises. Sorry you got so much hate for your decision man, but at the end of the day we just gotta make our own decisions and be happy with them, i never felt remorse in over a year about the games i sold, maybe others are different, and they're not wrong for thinking differently but like i said we just gotta do what's in our best interest hahaha.

    You have to put your health first Bryan and a lot of us are proud that you did that cause there is nothing worse then putting on a poker face pretending that everything is ok when it's not so well done buddy. I love playing games as much as the next gamer but at the end of the day it doesn't take over my everyday life which is important. Your welcome buddy! I game quite a lot too in a way that makes me happy so that I have room for other things in my life and don't ever apologize for putting yourself first cause we all need to do that sometimes even if we have the impulse to think of others first. Although it is an admirable quality to think of others, you have to be true to yourself and sometimes that is telling the situation as it is without having to spare peoples personal feelings cause there is enough people in the world who will take advantage if they are given an inch. Sorry for going on and on, I'm just glad that you took the necessary steps to worry about yourself. Proud of you bro! :)

    It's understandable it's a lot of money, I enjoy the history though and odd and unique stuff that no one has so I keep going, anyone getting into collecting should ask themselves in the beginning where does this end and what are your limits. That many games too is kinda fast, it's been 15 or so years for me and maybe I have 3,000 and 80 systems, but I think you keeping what you like is the right choice that's basically my choice if I die or sell it off is keep what I care about the most.

    • @JasonVectrex_187
      @JasonVectrex_187 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I sold my collection in 2012, then in 2016 when the NES classic came out, it sparked the hobby again. But now i only collect what I’m going to actually play. Because of that I play a lot more games now. Before I was just filling up shelves.

    What I have been seeing from a lot of collectors/gamers is only obtaining games that mean something to them (ex: childhood memories) and games that are fun, enjoyable, and entertaining. Dwindling down fodder seems to be the new in thing, keeping a nice niche collection that can be showcased.

    • @TheCoOpCollector
      @TheCoOpCollector  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. I seriously had almost 100 Wii Games that were all garbage. Out of the 600 NES titles, I had about 460 unique titles, rest were duplicates. About 20% of each set of games i had were duplicates. I maybe appreciated 100 games total which I kept about half of. The new series I'm starting will be all about rebuilding the ultimate all killer no filler set. Hopefully you'll enjoy and I'll see you back!

    • @Crateix
      @Crateix 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am on the same boat as you. I have been for a lack of a better word hoarding games and systems since 1999 when I got my first job during high school. I would spend a ton of money for a ton of games back then that I really had no interest of playing, just collecting for the pure sense. In 2016 I sold most of my library, kept mostly all the good shumps that I love and games that were given to me by my parents during christmas and such cause of the memories like Ariel on the genesis and road rash. I have a lot more room in my house, a third bedroom opened up as a guest room, and the feel of not being bugged down to keep purchasing is so good. I am enjoying my PS4 and Switch and only playing games that I truly truly enjoy.

    With each passing year...As the hardware gets older. It further deteriorates.
    Systems stop working. Cartridge and CD/DVD games suffer bit rot & data rot. Best to sell now before the retro collecting market nosedives into a big crash.

    I have to start by saying how awesome you look now! I will not criticize or question on how you got rid of 99% of your collection... you know why? Because I did the same not too long ago! I had some house and car issues and I was getting way over my head and decided to sell a part of my collection to help with the bills! Do I miss them? Yes of course! But do I miss getting rid of them to the point that I regret it? Absolutely not! I made the right decision! I'm now only collecting for PS4 and Vita and when I get a retro kick I just emulate them! People should stop getting angry because of the decision that you made because at the end of the day this is only a hobby! Also if people would just stop seeing the dollar value of those games they might realize that they're not that important! Don't worry about your youtube channel... you get back when you have the time! And if you decide to start collecting big time again in the future then I'll be here watching your pickups videos once again! Let's just say that I'm really impressed with you making a video about all of this and I applaud it! Great video and keep up the good work!

  • @snakeoo
    @snakeoo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just came across your vids.
    I’m just like you. I used to love video, played anything. Now I just play what I really want to. I’ll skip 80% of the games that come out now. I’ve been trying to figure out why that is, and to me it feels like it may be age related . Older I get, the more I lose interest in things I loved at one point .
    I used to be into Blu Ray collecting but one day I sat their and thought to my self, what’s the point of these discs on shelf doing nothing . 10 years I would have never though like that . The mind is wonderful thing but at the same time scary how your thoughts can change over the years .
    I love retro games, but whenever I think of buying something retro, I just think to my self, I can emulate it on my pc . Years ago I would have flat out bought it.
    Also just like you the things I love most, I’ve kept, others I sold simply because I originally bought just for the sake of collecting.
    Don’t worry about what others say. Buy what you want, sell what you want, it’s your life, not there’s .

    I can related, for me it became the thrill of collecting just to collect and I wound up with stacks of games I never touched. It was overwhelming me to the point I didn't play much at all. I'm selling off most of it and I'll have a small collection but one I'll actually play.

    Fantastic video for me as a would-be collector. I haven't started collecting due to time and storage space, but I love living vicariously through TH-camr collectors. My only objection is the Retron 5. That system suuuuuuuuuuuUUUUhhckss!! It's only reasonable use is as a glorified cartridge save backup device. RetroPie or an old laptop is better for streaming and playing. If you want high end 8-bit era combined into a single console, get the Analogue NT Mini.

      @TheCoOpCollector  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate you watching. I was fortunate with my Retron5 and never had any issues with it except when trying to update it once. For the convenience factor, it’s great, and not to mention I got it used for dirt cheap with some great SNES games a few years back.
      I’ll be doing a follow up video soon, almost like a 6 months later video and talk about what a miss and what I would’ve done different from selling my collection and from when I started. Definitely stayed tuned. Also, I started a new series shortly after selling it all called the Free Retro Game Collection. The series started with $50 and in the end I plan on buying and selling all killer, no filler games, and eventually return the $50 investment to my pocket. I’ve done 4 episodes so far and found some great games with a 5th episode coming out Sunday.
      Thank you again for watching! Keep in touch!

      The Co-Op Collector That's great to hear. I know I'm biased, of course, with respect to to R5. As part of my gaming setup, it's critical to me that I play light gun games including my old NES ones and several PlayStation ones. Playing the old Area 51 arcade port on my relatively massive 36" flat screen CRT is the best. I tried an R5 with a downscaler to my CRT, and the only thing I was okay with was the cartridge save backup and GBA games (only because I had never played them on anything better than the handheld before).

    Hey man, I get what you're saying, because I feel the same way too...kind of. Like I have a big collection and I don't play most of it, I've come to terms that I'm a collector and not a gamer. I still play games and a enjoy the ones I want to enjoy, I'm always down to play something. But I also like having my shelves filled with awesome titles and rare games and everything in between. I'm sure there's both out there, gamers and collectors. I've pretty much stopped collecting older systems because I'm happy with what I have for them and I rarely touch them too. Also, I like having the games that are worth so much, mainly just so I can say I have it, not to rub it into people's faces, but in my eyes I have a complete NES Metalstorm with the poster, probably worth about $400, with that in mind, I like having that as a piece in my collection rather than $400 in my bank account that'll just end up going to bills, food, and/or gas, that's why I work, to pay for all of that. I respect your decision, I've thought of doing it too, I can't bring myself to do it though. Still looking forward to your content, whatever it may be!

    What your doing is life changing, Finally you'll be out of the virtual video world for a moment,My Tip is don't buy games if you have no time playing it,Choose the very best games in your heart.if your selling games just leave a few,specially with memories.And yet maybe your mindset may relapse?There other things in life besides Video games.To tell you the truth I envy you because you can easlly afford those games,Life here in the Philippines is hard,So buying legitimate and authentic copies of games are expensive.The only systems that I have is PS1,PS2,N64,GBA and NGameCube.PS3 is phased out,& I don't think that i will be able to afford PS4,I am hunting games for the only systems that I have,Only used ones,I don't buy brandnew ones because there pricy that will affect my financial life.I know the hunt never stops,Specially if you have new system,Then system after system,PS5 is coming another collectible game library, it's ok to buy the system just to keep you updated,But you might as well sell the rest of your old system and there games for vacancy on your space,Cause to much is enough.

    So true.. i had a buying spree of nes games, spent €150 in less then a month (never did that and its quite alot for me) i do buy games i would like (or think i would like) Mostly Capcom games. Point is, i just went buying cause i could get it cheap and i liked the game. Got Darkwing duck, Castlevania 1 and 2 Chip and Dale and like 5 other nes games.
    I am thinking of downsizing my collection and keep the games i like the most. It is a hard task, especially you want a certain amount of money for it. But then i can buy the games i rlly like and get rid of the clutter.

    How did you sell it? Bulk sale?

    • @TheCoOpCollector
      @TheCoOpCollector  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, bulk sale. Was the only reasonable way of doing it for numerous reasons. Many resellers wouldn't buy due to it being the beginning of the convention off-season, so they'd be sitting on it for a few months (most con's run from March to October/Early November). I went into it only asking 50% value which was very ideal for both myself and the store who purchased it. I know the entire time I collected I never paid half retail, or even close to it, and it also left a good enough bumper for them to make good money off of it.

I play it more now than I do my Xbox One elite. still have most of my systems in Box ect but with emulators ect Im playing them less and less. I will keep my Sega CD front loader because its just awsome. and has great games. But alot of others I just keep because I dont think i will get enough money to make selling them worth the trouble of selling. I do have my Super Famicom and final fantasy games though my japaneeze is terrible so I get lost alot

      Like others have said, I'm also thinking about trimming my collection a bit, but I have more than just video games. I have a couple thousand DVDs/Blu-rays, hundreds of books, tens of thousands of comics, hundreds of action figures and no room for it all. I have a storage shed that I keep most of it in. At this point I'm basically a hoarder. And what makes it tough is the daunting and overwhelming task it would be to start trying to sell some it, knowing I won't get much. I definitely don't want to sell to a resell shop, but it would take me forever to list things individually on Ebay or Craigslist. Maybe you can do a video on tips on selling large collections, if you haven't done one already. I'm new to your channel.

    • @TheCoOpCollector
      @TheCoOpCollector  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could definitely do that, thank you for the input. It is EXTREMELY overwhelming to find where to start. After speaking with many resellers, they all mentioned that anything you sell for $5 or less you either break even or don't make anything. With my collection about 60% of it fell into the $5-7 category for games and most of the games I owned in the $75-300 range I already parted with. The easiest thing was to sell it local to a shop to avoid any issues. My collection was in the $24,000 range so I knew if I took the time to sell it through the year I'd run into several issues such as paying taxes if I made more than $20,000, as well as tons of eBay fees, packaging material, and many, many hours. I knew that if I was to I'd had to go in expecting no more than half retail.

      I appreciate this comment. It's true, I've had a handful of people belittle me for selling. At what point do they feel entitled to my collection? People don't understand that if I offered a deal to one person, then the next person would want the same deal and it'd keep going and going. It'd take up too much time to ship and a lot of time to get a transaction finalized. I would've had to spend many days taking trips to the post office, buying packaging materials, and whatever else was needed. Selling in bulk to a local store may have been about 20 or so percent less than if I was to piece it out, but I was willing to make that sacrifice to not worry about the stress.
      Thank you for watching!

      The thrill of the hunt is right. When I got into it you could go to the flea market and find something new every time, regardless of value. It wasn’t about scooping up the $20 games for $5. It was finding all these odds and ends you never saw back in the day. Super Team Games was a game I got during my first flea market trip, so I’m sure if I saw Stadium Events I would probably be just as stoked. The memories of breaking out the power pad and using my hands instead of feet when I was younger was awesome.
