  • In this video, we learn about the gray partridge.
    QUICK FACTS
    • Lifespan: 1 - 4 years
    • Length: 11.8-13.0 in
    • Wingspan: 20.9-22.1 in
    • Weight: 13.6-17.6 oz
    • Family: Phasianidae
    Description
The gray partridge, also known as the Hungarian partridge, or hun, is a gamebird of the pheasant family Phasianidae. It is a plump bird with a small head. Its plumage is mostly gray, hence the name.
The face and tail are cinnamon-colored. It has rusty-brown streaks across its back, upper wings, flanks, and tail. The belly is pale with a brown horse-shoe marking. There are eight recognized subspecies.
    Vocalizations: Call and song
Gray Partridges have a short, somewhat strident call and a raucous, clucking flush call as they take off.
    Distribution and range
Gray partridges are non-migratory ground birds native to Europe and Asia. They have been introduced to many parts of the world outside their native range, including North America, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
    Habitat
They inhabit open areas, such as grasslands, agricultural fields, and shrublands. During winter, they can also be found in wooded or semi-wooded areas.
    Diet and feeding habits
Their diet comprises mainly seeds and grains, including wheat, barley, oats, and corn. They also eat insects, primarily in the summer.
    Nesting and breeding
Gray Partridges nest on the ground in a shallow scrape nest constructed by the female and lined with grasses and stems. They lay up to 22 eggs per clutch, and the incubation period lasts roughly 23 days. The precocial chicks are able to leave the nest shortly after hatching.
    Status and conservation
Populations are declining in parts of their range, such as the UK, due to unsustainable agricultural practices and habitat loss. They are, however, still evaluated as “least concern” by the IUCN.
