Description
The gray peacock pheasant, also known as the Burmese peacock-pheasant, is a large ground bird of the Phasianidae family that includes partridges, chickens, and turkeys.
Its plumage is gray-brown with small white spots all over and large blue, purple, and green eye spots on the back and tail, similar to that of the peacock, hence the name.
Its underparts are scalloped, and it has a white throat. Sexes are similar, but the male has a longer tail and a bushy, front-swept crest. The female is smaller with less ornamental plumage.
Vocalizations: Call and song
The gray peacock-pheasant has a rapid squawking cackle. The song is an ascending series of strident croaks.
Distribution and range
Gray peacock pheasants are native to Bangladesh, Northeast India, and Southeast Asia.
Habitat
They inhabit dense lowland and hill forests.
