      Another fantastic video! Your videos have helped me so much with this game. I’m still kinda new tho so I was wondering if you could answer a few questions or or maybe a make a video out of these topics or point me to the guide that covers it? I’m having trouble with more advanced battle tactics. For example you mentioned how the wildlings are good at the skirmish role or a great flank unit but I don’t know how to order them to skirmish or even section them out into their own group to make them flank. Similarly I have trouble micro my cav to protect flanks but the ai does it just fine. Is there a way for me to order them to defend archers or to attack certain targets other than just charge or engage? Finally I feel like I am missing information when it comes to defending and attacking settlements. Currently I just put them in the ai control because I can’t figure out how to get them to interact with siege engines or defend certain sections of walls. Especially archers when I put them up on the walls they stay clumped up until I give up and just give control back to the ai that’s when they spread out and start shooting haha. And sometimes when I give control back to the ai the ai switches around all their formations and the time and strategy I spent splitting them up and placing them for the battle goes to waste haha. Sorry that may be too much but let me know if you can help with any of those questions!!

      Good video but why do you jate axes so much (at least in mount and blade). Theyre just the jack of all trades. Swords are bad against armor but have speed and range axes are better against armor because the game sctually gives them a higher impact force concentration and their swingspeed is higher. Maces have the worst stats but excell against plate armor specifically because of their blunt damage. But since no troops have a great amount of platearmor (most have only helmets categorized as plate) axes are fine against most troops. Axes give bonus against shields aswell. Also a shorter weapon is beneficial to the AI except on horseback

I guess thats more precise, sry im not a native speaker so there could be a few misunderstandings....and its the internet so sadly no face to face talking. But if you say the AI changed their behaviour in that regard i certainly believe you. Although i have around 1000h myself in bannerlord ill have to aggree that youve gone in to detail much further.
      Could you try them in a larger scale environment lets say 200 axe/spearmen against an opponent meelee force of tier 5 cavalry and infantry of the same amount changing the percentage of cavalry between 0 and 40%? Definitely the spearmen will do better against cavalry but does the axeman perform better in inf vs inf situations? Im currwntly playing on 1.8.1 and got no wlan cause i just moved in and have quite some stuff to do otherwise id get v.1.9 and do it myself. Good videos btw i really enjoy watching your stuff.

    I disagree with Strugian Heavy Axemen logic:
    1. Axes and throwing axes are amazing, because they both are very good against enemy shields. I have had situations where opposite line infantrymen reached my shield wall literally either without shields or with very deteriorated shields. Such shields would be destroyed within few hits from strugian axes leaving them completely unprotected. Thrown axes with proper captain and perks are absolutely devastating against enemy infantry shields. Unless javelins have a special shield puncturing tip they won't do the same damage to shields as thrown axes.
    2. Also where axes loose in length, they gain in swing speed and handling. So in a Shield Wall, where swings are limited, shorter and faster weapons which can take out opponent's own shield are much more effective. Also axes work much better during sieges where there are close quarters fighting and destroying opponent's shields on top of the walls is critical to victory.

      eeeh, i recently tool a look at the stats of their axe compared to the sword of the legionary and it was around the same in swing speed and damage but had like 30 less range... the heavy axeman should get a buff imo...

    • @Glo0ze
      @Glo0ze ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@julianbraunbeck7632 The problem with axes is that axe damage is cutting damage making it weak against armor just as a sword. yet axes are top heavy and deliver a massive blunt impact because of this (just like a mace which is just a heavy blob on a stick). In bannerlord an axe and a sword with the same weight and length do the same damage to armored targets (they get the same cut damage stat) which is just not realistic at all. Since a sword with the same weight and length as an axe delivers way less damage to armor since the weight is more evenly distributed making its pure kinetic energy at the place of impact way lower. An axe should have a combination of both blunt and cut damage, less cut damage than a sword and less blunt damage than a mace but it would be better than a mace at dealing with low armor targets and better than a sword at dealing with armor but right now it is only good at dealing with low armor targets because of its pure cut damage

    Some thoughts about this:
    1) The Vlandian Sergeant. Having 3 "1-handed weapon types" on random can be a boon. It means that in cases of dealing with heavy armor, those with maces will do better, against shields axes will do better and for general purpose/defense swords will do better. Their armor, while by no means great, is not overly terrible either, because their "cape" provides some pretty good benefits to their body armor(a total of 50, and 2 of the 3 variants have this), their helmet is pretty decent(always 46). Arms are at 39 armor and legs at 34. Compared to some infantry units, they do not have an inherent weakpoint that you can reliably target.
    2) Oathsworn is a great "full package-deal" kind of unit. They have a nice "shotgun" for when the enemy has gotten close enough for the throwing weapons to get tossed in, often breaking several shields or killing off enemies. They have a great spear to deal with cavalry. Their weakest point is their shield(due to the shape) and the, at times, vulnerable armor(especially head).
    2a) Wildlings gets more Shotgun and are faster, but loses the spear, so are under threat to get run over by enemy heavy cav. They also have more clearly defined weak spots, like their head(25 armor) and arms(15).
    3) Darkhan are pretty good, but lack diversity, as they have no ranged option. They have one glaring weakness in their leg armor, so if they get a bit unlucky, they can go down quick.
    4) Heavy Axemen lacks a spear to deal with heavy cavalry and has a minor armor weakness on their arms(27 armor). They are bascially a more well-rounded Wildlings, in that they do not have as massive weak points, at the cost of a few less throws per battle. Great shield.
    4a) Heavy Spearmen are good, but have no good ways of dealing with armor or shields(either from throwing or main weapon). They are tough and have a spear, but the spear length is on the low side, meaning many heavy cavalry units will actually hit them before they can strike back. And they are a little slower than most infantry. Not only due to their lower Athletics, but also due to all that heavy armor. I will say that mixing in both Heavy Axemen and Heavy Spearmen(along with a few Heroic Linebreakers) will yield the best results. Great shields.
    5) Legionaries are solid, but in effect they both lack a spear and a throwing option. Making them strictly line-fighters. Pretty good in offensive sieges. Easy to recruit.
    6) Solid, but has a weak point in leg armor. Shield is not the best. Can be hard to recruit or replenish due to geography, especially during offensive campaigns.
    I wont tier them, because they each bring something for their faction, and their strength might diminish or grow based on army composition, enemy army composition, captain/leader skills and battle type.

    @user-dj3bo6fl7s 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    Fun fact. The Wildlings having less armor is intentional. That 140 Athletics plus less armor. MEans they are lighter and therefore faster.
    When the enemy get's close enough. The wildlings can simply retreat faster than their non cavalry enemies until all Javelins are expended. Then they can be ordered to countercharge.

  • @RovalisGTO

    I agree with this list for the most part. I find that I value the “expendability” of infantry a lot more in 1.0 because they just get ground up in big battles. I used to just use tier 6 cavalry and dismount them if I wanted infantry because they’re just better, but it’s impossible to keep replenishing them at the rate you lose them if you keep using them as infantry.
    I like Wildlings over Veteran Infantry usually just because Battania is more central but vet infantry are fantastic.

The Diversity in Weapons that the Sergeants have seems to make them incredibly flexible and capable of killing many different tiers of troops. The spears they have also make them cavalry lawn mowers in large numbers. I think this video drastically downplayed the Sergeants capabilities.

    Idk man. From my experience in game, there's a few hot takes here.
    1) A major, major oversight in assessing the Heavy Axeman as a D-Tier. A lot of people are saying it's a more rounded wildling, which is true, but tactically speaking they have far greater flexibility as actual infantry instead of, say, as a heavy skirmisher. I'll grant, for some reason Taleworlds nerfed the HELL out of the Axeman by removing shoulders and giving them a weaker helmet for some reason, but to put them below wildlings seemingly due to a throwing weapon preference is wrong, imho. They're better armored and fair infinitely better in actual infantry combat. I've had as much success with them as I have with the legionary, though maybe that's down to tactics. Again, imho, they're B-Tier at worst.
    2) The spearman being A tier feels like a paper rating to me. On paper, their boost in skills and added armor value makes them seem formidable, however if they aren't supported by a more standard line infantry they lose to the top half of the infantry ratings, only really beating out the few very bad ones in performance. You have to mix them with Axemen in the front to filter infantry and put them behind to use the length of their spears or they get closed-on and destroyed very easily. This isn't the performance of an A-Tier unit, and SERIOUSLY doesn't deserve to stand next to the Legionary. B-Tier at best... imho lol.
    3a) The video seems to favor infantry with long weapons. Long weapons are fantastic for attacking cavalry, but lose out heavily vs. other infantry. I guess call me an Axeman simp at this point, but their 1H axe is straight up destructive because it's fast, smacks pretty hard, and has bonus vs. enemy shields. Within infantry fighting range, your rating would suggest that it's a landslide against them unless they're fighting Sergeants, but I can tell you that the massive shield and fast axe combo is DESTRUCTIVE against other infantry. Axemen hold the line while spearmen push it. It's not one vs. the other.
    3b) The preference in general towards long weapons needs to be addressed. Legionaries do great against everything because they're heavily armored and essentially balanced, but the fine steel paramarion struggles in line vs. line combat. I might even argue that the reason Legionaries fair so well is due to 2/3 unit presets are using the mace instead. Hell, I've used Sergeants in their current state with great success because of their small, fast mace.
    4) Aserai as S-Tier.... oof. I would love to see the testing. I've run plenty of tests myself, and never once has the Aserai Veteran Infantry won against Legionaries across a data set. The only way it happens is if your sim runs charge on charge with literally no management, where the random instances of the Legionary shield not being raised in time to block the javelins can take them down. Again, this feels like a paper victory. You can make the same comparison to the Aserai Master Archer and Khuzait Marksman. On paper, everything favors the Aserai archer but in actual combat they lose to the Marksman every single time. Maybe I'm salty about this because I'm finishing an Aserai culture run right now, but I have to replace Aserai infantry at a rate roughly twice what I do compared to Legionaries. This applies to the Palace Guards as well. I have to replace them 2-3x more commonly than Elite Menavliatons.
    I'm going to go do some testing of my own now and see if something changed, but I had run most of my tests right before this culture run and unless something shifted from 1.0 to 1.01, I have my remaining doubts. I'm not saying I'm right, I have about 1100 hours in the game right now vs. a lot of the community with thousands so maybe I'm just using them wrong, but I just don't agree with several of these points/opinions. The video itself, however, is very finely crafted. Great work!

      @RBCharger ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think I evaluate troops the same way you do. While everyone is busy cheering the victory, I am studying the report looking at kill ratios and noting which type of troops I need to replace. I don't even use Wildlings anymore because they are high on the killed list. Maybe they are better since full release but I haven't checked yet because of prior prejudice.

    • @AlanLamb11
      @AlanLamb11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Largely agree except about the Marksmen vs Asrai Master Archer- both are quite good and I'd put them A tier but both are a HUGE step below Fian Champions and Khuzait Heavy Bowmen or Khan's Guard who are the most efficient troops overall in field battles, sieges, or anything in BL.
      I was really surprised to see Heavy Axemen that low- he must not have played that much because like you when I look at casualty reports and watch the battle line, Heavy Axemen are just behind the best regular polearms like Imperial Menavliatons, Heroic Linebreakers, and Falxmen.
      For sieges and fight archer their shields plus fast axe even put them a bit above those guys- they don't get as many kills but they have far fewer deaths. 2 handed pole-arms I have to replace about 5-10% after big battles vs less than 1-3% for the top 3 units or 3-6% for Heavy Axemen.

    I'm pretty sure you've got Wildling/Oathsworn availability backwards. In a fight vs. groups of bandits where Fians rout the enemy before they get to your melee troops, the wildlings in training still get some exp from their throwing weapons, while completely non-ranged infantry gets nothing.

    Sturgian Heavy spearmen might not have the longest or hardest hitting swords. but that 10 extra skill slightly offsets it.
    What they do have. Is crazy good armor and shields. That "weak" sword of their has a swing speed and handling that when buffed by that crzy 140 1h skill, ensures that a few points of damage don't matter in the least.

  • @SamRocher
    @SamRocher ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks for all these videos! I think the thing I would like to understand most in Bannerlord is the difference between "foot troops", "infantry", "archers", etc. that are used in perks as I will see something say it affects "foot troops", but my archers will not be shown as benefiting when holding down Ctrl when looking at the lord's bonuses. This also contains the question of "if a melee infantry unit picks up a bow, do they get bow bonuses then? What about if a cavalry dismounts? Do they lose their cav bonuses and gain foot/infantry bonuses? Then you have things like that woodchopper perk that is phrased as if it would actually benefit arrows against shields, which I doubt it would. All the information I can find online is conflicting and a lot of it is old. Knowing exactly how a perk benefits me really helps me to feel like I am getting a benefit from selecting it.

    • @princeofgreece9054
      @princeofgreece9054 ปีที่แล้ว

      A majority of the traits you are talking about are only active when you are the "commander" of a group of units, IE when you put yourself in their formation at the beginning of the battle. There are some generic traits that count for your entire party, but most of those are identified with specific wording like "troops in your party". If it indicates infantry, archers, etc then it is talking about that specific class of unit. An archer that runs out of arrows is still considered an archer, and if an infantry unit were to somehow pick up a bow, they would still be an infantry unit and only able to get those bonuses.

    • @SamRocher
      @SamRocher ปีที่แล้ว

      @@princeofgreece9054 Part of the issue is that when you look at a captain's influences, you'll see Infantry Influence has stuff like Morning Exercise (foot troop move speed) and Sprint (infantry move speed). As that bonus isn't also listed under Ranged Influence, and it isn't clear if ranged infantry are still considered to be infantry, it isn't clear if foot archers get both the foot troop and infantry perks or only the foot troop as "infantry" might sometimes imply non-ranged infantry.

    As a new player, I was using your video with great success. Some guy just did a video on youtube where he shows through multiple simulations in v1.0.1, that the Sturgian Heroic Line Breaker is the strongest infantry unit in the game. The ones with the huge two-handed axes. You didn't mention them, so this has me wondering what the deal is with them. He did 500v500 tests, and the line breakers destroyed every unit in a matter of seconds. It was shocking to see them decimate 500 legionary's and every other infantry unit. They didn't win close fights, they absolutely rolled through every unit. Only the Battanian Fian Champions beat them in a close fight.

    What would you change in the troops and/or rosters, and/or would you expect to change?
    I definitely agree the Sturgians should have an infantry noble line. (Maybe no cav or cav and archers merged into a mounted skirmisher with high athletics for a cav.) The infantry types should synergize well somehow. High athletics but heavy gear (nice armor and (best) shields).
    I think Khuzait have horse archers as their thing, and cav in general so having mediocre infantry and archer would be fitting. The darkhan should be a mix of shield and shock (as it's the only infantry troop), but not too good in either.
    Aserai and Battanians should imo both be lightly armoured, but compensated in higher skill or nice weapons. Aserai have the best non noble archer, so I'd guess it's a matter of time for the infantry to get nerfed. Or maybe lose lots of armor but offset by something nice (braceable spear or throwing). Battanians could have extra athletics to make them the fastest foot soldiers. Either faction could benefit from several units having throwing weapons, it'll make the impact bigger I. But they each do need something different.
    I think imperial should be best armoured, a braceable polearm but no throwing and meh 1H. They hold the line.
    Vlandian sergeant could have second best armour, I'd give them a guaranteed mace as their specialty, a good shield and decent polearm. Any especially good vs shields?

    The one thing I hate with the Darkhan is their shield :
    They go from the "Spear Infantry" that has a huge tower shield, making them near-invulnerable to archer fire... to a small cavalry round shield which doesn't protect nearly enough.
    Arrows and javelins easily pass above or below the shield, and will either hit the head, shoulders or the legs (legs which are the least protected part of their bodies).
    I prefer to stick with Spear Infantry instead of Darkhan just for this reason : they do the same job (though not as good at it), they cost less to maintain and they don't get shredded by serious archer fire.
    PS : also when it comes to axes, don't forget they do extra damage to shields and wooden contraptions so they tend to crack open shield walls and are very useful to have in a siege (they can smash barricades, doors and siege weapons with ease). They're not as good as maces in late game, but they still have their usefulness

    Maybe it's because this is 'already' a month old and some patches have gone by, but I find myself disagreeing with one part of your assessment, namely the spear and spear bracing. First, spears don't need to be exceedingly long to be able to be braced. Just going through the store and loot I've seen multiple spears that can be braced at 170ish length. And then, I find spear bracing barely required to deal with heavy cavalry. The couched lance charge can be foiled with a shield wall and then the cavalry gets stuck, and slaughtered. The AI for cavalry isn't up to the task of making you require a dedicated anti-cavalry unit, except maybe against players.
    I do agree the aserai veteran is really good. They're generally a bit out of the way for me to recruit.

    Hey I did some testing against khuzait with inf+archers only. I ve been strugling agains mixed khuzaits. You might wanna test this too. I did 200 vs 200.
    Enemy: 50%horse archers and 50% shock cav. (used tier 6)
    Friendly: 40% Fian nobles, 60% infantry (30% wildlings+30% heavy axemen in the same group)
    Setup: 1. place all infantry in line formation facing the enemy, make sure it is 2 stack line, you should see wildling at the front and falxmen behind them (do not make 2 groups, keep them all in 1)
    2. place Fians in loose formation as long as you can far behind infantry but make sure to have reach , place them slightly turned, facing left ( about 25 degrees, this is to anticipate the horse archer approach coming always from the left) your formation will look odd but it is working
    What will happen?
    1.Horse archers will push first, trying to flank left. They will be shot by your archers
    2. Main shock cavalry will charge you after while and thats what you want. Make sure you keep the line standing facing the charge.
    3. Just before the impact the wildlings will throw their javelins, killing A LOT. Heavy falxemen will eat cavalry too. Make sure you keep standing with the infantry all the time.
    4. all is left is horse archers. After cavalry is dealt with move the inf sloser to archers
    Try to pick a commander for your men that has Polearm and 1 handed, perhaps throw.
    Try it out and watch the results!!!!!
    I think heavy falxmen are 1 of the best hidden gems in the game vs cavalry combined with fians and wildlings

    It's hard to argue against the Imperial Legion. They are super tanky, swords are good in most situations, and they are always available. Legions being in the middle of the map, makes them by far the most available unit of all infantry. Oh, did I mention they are tanky? These guys will absolutely hold the line, and are great in sieges. For Sturgia, the axe isn't really that bad, it's just they are situational. Axes are very good in melee, and their throwing weapon is nice for some cheesy early kills before the frontlines smash. But agree, they will fall short in the open field. However, they are good in sieges since the axe is a fast swinging shield shredder. A good mix of these guys in the army is a good idea

    Notice that you mentioned using perks with captains to get the Aserai Veteran Infantry desired effect. The Aserai don't have any Tier 5 units that can take 1st or even 2nd place with defeating other Tier 5 units. This would be ok, if the Aserai had a decent 1-4 roster, but they're so fragile with weak armor and low HP. The Aserai still have the weakest faction militarily imo.
