    I love watching people seeing this for the first time. Rob had operatic training and he did this for his father. Austin had musical theater training and his teachers suggested opera to him also. Check Austin singing Bring Him Home (from Les Miserables). When Austin heard Rob, he asked to redo his part. When asked who is the best singer in the group they all say Rob. He does an amazing R&B vibe on End Of Road cover. They also said this will not be performed live. They really can cover any style. Thanks for starting my Sunday perfectly. ✌🏻&🩷

      @@itzel1735 I am repeatedly amazed that the other guys took the time and spent the effort to arrange and master the background vocals for those live performances just so they could 'show Austin off'. I think the best sound is the first one from Mankato (MANKATO, MN (Les Misérables- Bring Him Home) - Home Free FOC Concert @ the Verizon Center) even though the visual is a bit rough in places.

    When HF teased this, many long-time fans suspected it would be lip sync'd or...because HF has done soooo many comedic videos...presumed Rob and Austin would go into 'silly' mode (which they're so skilled at doing). The shock of this results in a range of reactions: some reactors laughing in disbelief to a few who immediately started crying. Quite a few restarts. 'Wait a sec. Whaaat?' Going forward you'll never see these two in quite the same light, especially Rob.

    From now on, every time you see our boys, you'll be thinking "Two opera singers try singing country..." !! The solid musical backgrounds they have has always been a important part of the virtuosity of Home Free! Opera and musical theatre led them to the group, and the rich, tight harmonies you hear are the product of 5 extraordinary talents. Rob says he won't be doing any more opera for us, but I am thankful for this one treat! Your reaction is one of my favorites. Home Free is simply great. Thank you for this one!

  • @pamelagoodman7559
    @pamelagoodman7559 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You’re right. Rob is using the larger space of his lower register hat satisfies operas desire for both light and dark in the operatic voice. He’s still singing in the tenor voice here. Austin is a classical crossover singer here, he’s a lyric tenor and does not have the same space (lower register) as Rob. They both hit that B4 at the end

  • @beckiramsey9561
    @beckiramsey9561 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    When I first saw this, heard Rob start singing, I thought it was a joke and they were playing someone else’s voice over it and he was lip syncing! My chin was on the floor the entire video, Rob definitely did not sound like Rob!!😮 When Austin came in, I heard his angelic voice, so beautiful! I was just in so much shock! In the end,I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised, they are super-singers, like super heroes! They can sing anything!!🔥🔥🔥

    Rob's voice was much warmer than his regular tenor voice. I believe what he had to do a technique called 'open throat' to take him out of the "bright" tenor voice we are used to hearing. (I may be wrong on this and I welcome any corrections)
    There are a few rock singers that got their start in opera: Pat Benetar immediately comes to mind.
    I would love to see Rob and Avi do a duet. Avi had just been hired by an opera company when he got the request to join PTX.

  • @graceparker7003
    @graceparker7003 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Austin has a massive Theater background which is a different type of voice. He carried himself very well through this. Rob, I learned the hard way, studied and sang Opera and the deep resonance in his voice reminded me of the late great Pavarotti. This was an exquisite treat to say the least and I keep hoping at some point Rob will do another, but I am not holding my breath. Loved your reaction Jeremy as always. You get it and thanks for mentioning the other group. I would like to check them out and that lovely Soprano you mentioned.

  • @antrazitaj5209
    @antrazitaj5209 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I imagine everybody was blown away by Rob with this. We didn't know he studied opera in college and it is a very distinct singing style.
    And as somebody else who enjoys both metal and opera there are enogh common traits in both genres people unterestimate. Metal can easily go very dramatic and theatrical (even just with instrumentation). I personally have a special love for metal covers of classical pieces or vice versa, I don't even need the singer

    • @patriciamcl54
      @patriciamcl54 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In fact that style of singing is fast going out of fashion, along with the Italian warhorse operas it was developed for. In a modern opera house with new operas being presented every year as well as the rich 20th century repertoire, a bright lyric tenor voice like Austin's is in fact much more in demand, simply because it is more versatile.

    you werent wrong, that WAS fire. Here's the things you didnt know. Rob is classically trained and was going to be an Opera singer. Austin's training is in musical theater so more like Broadway. Austin did an amazing job as a classical crossover first timer and yes, their are still surprises out there.

    Great reaction Jeremy, but they always are! I ❤️ your reactions! One that Rob did that surprised me was jazz Rob when he sang lead in HF’s incredible version of Joy To The World from 2013. That whole song was unbelievable, Rob’s lead, the chords in the harmonies, the backdrop, all of it! Nothing these boys do surprises me anymore. You have 5 of the most talented vocalists in the world in my opinion all in one group. How blessed are we Home Fries?

    I thought it was shocking when Rob took the lead on the R&B cover of End Of The Road by Boys 2 Men. His soulfulness in that was amazing, so if you have not seen that video, you need to check it out. All the guys are so versatile with what they can do with their voices that overall, they are unmatched as a group. I mean Pentatonix and Voice Play are great too, but HF has a way of touching one's soul that when they finish a song, you feel yourself at peace, joy, or comfort, and well being like no other.

  • @peggygross7409

    I was not surprised by this performance. Operatic singing involves a different vocal technique than is used for Home Free's shows. It's also why they timed this performance for when they were not on tour Usually opera singers do not use microphones and are trained to project their voices above the orchestra. I'm glad you liked it. Have you reacted to any of the songs where Rob is whistling? The most recent one is On the Road Again.

    Perfect reaction! You were one of the few reactors who thought Rob & Austin would sound great, but, like everyone else, was absolutely Rob-smacked (gobsmacked) when they started singing. Most thought it would be either comedic or a nice try.
    I agree with everyone; Bring Him Home is the one that really highlights Austin's theater music training. You've already reacted to Chance's Wayfaring Stranger (with The Hound & The Fox). For Tim, I prefer him and Peter Hollens singing Misty Mountains (on Peter's channel) or him and The Bass Gang singing Hooked On A Feeling (on The Bass Gang's channel). Adam... he just shines any time he beat boxes!

    Great reaction! I have never been a big fan of opera except maybe some Andrea Bocelli & a few others. But I have always appreciated the talent it takes to sing opera. I was pretty impressed with Rob & Austin's version of Nessun Dorma. I have heard this famous song done by Pavarotti. I think I was more surprised by Rob's range & powerful delivery than even Austin's. Pretty good for a couple of country boys! Nice to see them dressed up in suits & looking classy.

  • @georgefisher1995
    @georgefisher1995 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    So much fun watching your amazement. You describe Rob’s voice as “buttery”, I generally think of it as warm, comfortable flannel. Austin is sharp blue ice, Chance is Emerald Green/Black velvet, and Tim … well, Tim is all of the above.
    In Nesin Dorma, these two guy’s expose another surprise. Home Free, and every member of Home Free, has the talent and ability to shock you. Their diversity is always a pleasant, original, surprise.
    Austin has a solo of “Bring Him Home” from Le Miserable”. Look for the solo done at home, accompanied by a piano.

    Great reaction! Operatic style metal is terrific! If you haven't already, check out Unleash the Archers (Awakening is a great intro); the lead singer has a fantastic operatic voice, in fact she has a video here singing Brindisi. If you want more "shock", check out Tim Foust singing Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/Stay. It really shows off his 5 octave range; you might be surprised how high this "bass" can sing.

    I don't know if there is a song that Home Free has in their arsenal that has the shock value of this one. That being said, they do a live version of "9 to 5" with a beatboxing breakdown that is fantastic. Also, their videos "Listen to the Music" by The Doobie Bros or "Ain't Going Down (til the sun comes up)" by Garth Brooks, are definitely playlist worthy. 😊😊

  • @JoanN63
    @JoanN63 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is insane. This is wow, wow and again wow. It's extremely good. Fantastic. Both are doing great. But Rob, I'm perplexed. His voice is just magical, so rich, so warm. Chills just ran through my body. It flows into my heart. What you say: Rob sounds like a (good) opera singer, and not like Rob from Home Free where he is also so great. For me he will be able to stand with the greatest of opera singers.
    It's not often that I listen to songs by opera singers 5 times and more in a row. But here it is. This is perfection. Even if you don't like opera, this must touch you, you must like this.😉
    Of course I hope that both will always continue to do Home Free, but I wouldn't think it wrong that such "trips" are made more often. Opera, country, ballads, soul etc. I think anything is possible..

    I love the fact that the metal world is getting introduced to classical style singing and music. I really wish more people understood that opera, especially is far, far from being “uncool.” Close your eyes and just let the sound flow through you-you really don’t need to understand the lyrics to appreciate the sound, which, here, is absolutely glorious.
    And it’s wonderful to see these guys branch out into unexpected styles.
    Loved this reaction!!

    Good music is good music, no matter the genre. It is also good to be called out on being biased. Though your descriptive words are much like others, your true wonderment was on full display. Can't say much else, as I too, am a devoted fan of the power of music. Loved your reaction!
    We are all familiar with the great Pavarotti's stirring performance of Nessun Dorma. As much as it was/is a wondrous moment in time,.... for me it was the apparent ascendance of Pavarotti's spirit which moved me as none other. May LP rest in peace and continue his gifting to the rest of the Universe...
    If you could grlant the time, please do give a listen to Austin Brown's rendition of 'Bring Him Home' from the classic musical play of 'Les Miserables.' Though much of it is inspirational enough, the very ending is what teaches me that I, indeed, know very little....

    I've listened to 3 seconds and saw your face... this is amazing.. I've heard it b4 and as a woman not truly an opera fan.. I loved Rob and Austin doing this.. My mother is true Italian.. Luciano is the best at this song.. but Rob and Austin amazed me with this.. but I just listened to the girl doing a blip.. wow.. this is why you have to open yourself to every genre of music.. you can be blown away.

    I love this song. And Rob’s training for this genre is evident. Austin’s training was musical theatre, I believe. But I think he made a better than decent showing here. Even if they never do anything like this again we have this to go back to! ❤️

    Rob was classically trained in Opera in college. Austin started out in musical theater. So there is that.

    Actually, it is like a switch in your vocal chords in a way. Opera is sung with different placement of the vocal chords. You can hear the difference. I'd love to see them sing this live because I've heard Rob on some live videos where you can hear the booming resonance from his chest in his mid to lower register. You can't hear that with recorded songs because they take that out to make it sound smoother, I guess. Or you just can't hear it as well when he's recorded. I'm not sure. So to hear this live I think would blow us away even more. Thank you Nancy (& Jeremy)! I've been waiting for this one.

    You would enjoy listening to anything from Tim's " Pieces of Me" album. A real change of pace. Rob can just glide from genre to genre. Thanks for reacting to this video.

    I was also shocked by Rob. He could have had n opera career but I'm glad he's in Home Free.

    Great reaction but the best I've seen on this was from a Italian opera singer/reactor. She said she not only forgot they weren't opera singers but she forgot they weren't Italian.

    Your reaction was just like mine when I first heard this. These guys have no end to their talents!! I've been a fan of theirs from the very beginning but each time I hear something new from them it's like I'm hearing them for the very first time. Not sure if you've heard any of Tim's solo stuff but talk about mind blowing!!!! Think you might enjoy it if you haven't already heard any of it

    Austin is generally SHARP, hot, cutting cold blue ice, Rob is warm, soothing flannel. The others in the group - Chance is green/black velvet, and Tim is …. Well, Tim. He will rumble your bass emotions with chills, and then glide effortlessly into upper ranges. Don’t forget Adam, the compass, the metronome, the glue, the body that brings it all together. Each part is essential.

    Great reaction. In the end I thought you was gonna start singing with them. You should listen to their version of "Helplessly Hoping" it's amazing but then again everything they sing is amazing. ❤️

    The switch in Rob's throat is his larynx. In the Sea Shanty Medley, you can hear that dropped larynx in his solos. He has a gorgeous voice but I've noticed that reactors always mutter about goosebumps of just say "Wow" or make a little sound of shock when Austin starts. His voice is not so different from what we've heard before but in high quality music, his voice seems to have come home and reach its full potential.
    There is a lot of nonsense talked about opera, some of it by people who should know better. Rob is a dramatic or heroic tenor, with a voice for the heavyweight Italian operas of Verdi, Puccini etc. Voices like that are not so easy to employ these days when the Italian workhorses are not really fashionable, and these voices don't transfer easily to other forms (classical song, oratoria, musicals). Austin is a lyric tenor, and a fairly rare one in that he has what the Italians call "spinto"- an incisiveness that would enable him to be heard through a full orchestra. My guess is that this is what Austin's teachers at college heard and why they wanted him to study opera. A lyric tenor is a versatile beast anyway, adaptable to other forms (Austin was destined for Broadway when Home Free finally invited him to join) but also more able to cope with the terrors of modern opera than a heavier Italianate voice. Opera has moved on a long, long way in the last 100 years.
    You should have seen the responses to this at its premiere. People reported shaking with emotion, everyone was in tears, it was mayhem. I don't think that was because we're not used to hearing these guys singing this sort of thing, because it wasn't just surprise. I feel this is a true masterpiece and that we see so little real beauty in our lives that when we find it, we don't know how to react and our nervous system gives up, leaving us in puddles on the floor!
