I went to a Powerwolf concert at the end of 2019 and I must admit that was one of the best shows I've ever attended to, because the band knows how to interact with the fans and the voice of Attila Dorn is amazing.

You have to check out Epica! Epica is one of the top 3 Symphonic Metal bands (and the best one IMHO). They incorporate symphonic elements with goth, death and prog metal and do so with amazing composition and meaningful lyrics. Highly recommended.
Both are fantastic!!! but... I was in PowerWolf Show... I and tell you... That´s something absurdly unforgettable!!! The guys´re amazing!! So in this case... i voted for POWERWOLF... ever and ever!
Usually I don't like cover versions but Epica did excellently with this one - I still give it to Powerwolf but it's very, VERY close for me (and yeah, I know I'm half a year late, lol)
Since both of them have their own singing... I choose both because I heard Powerwolf first before Epica. In my opinion powerwolf give the "power" in the song and Epica bring "harmony".
Well Powerwolfs whole shtick is medieval folklore with werewolves, vampires, satan and all those thing, and the church was heavily involved in dealing with these creatures so what you end up getting is christian priest werewolves that sometimes sing about boners. I dont reckon thats really a message, its just fun to sing about

I was pleasantly surprised by the Epica cover. Haven't listened all that much to them so didn't really know what to expect but I thought it was good for sure. I think I still prefer Powerwolf's original simply because Attilla's vocals just seem more evil and fit the song better. First lets say both are fantastic metal bands. My personal favorite is Epica by far way. But that is also because the live concerts are so epic amazing and they adding more dimension in the music. Well on every aspect Epica is the better band for me. But i love Powerwolf also very much, its gives you the "battle" feel and also good lyrics.

Powerwolf talked in a podcasts how the idea to the cover version on the album sacrament of sin was born: They toured together with Epica and Epica used this song for their sound check. Powerwolf liked it so much that they wanted to make it a bonus for their newest album and started inviting other bands to do the same :)

Well done! I'm really adore Powerwolf, but I vote for Epica. I'm just mad about how they create such massive powerful symphonic sound and yet it's so heavy. You absolutely should check them more and you haven't heard the whole power of Simone's voice yet)🔥 In my opinion if you want to realise what is Epica itself, you should go to songs: Kingdom of Heaven or Consign to Oblivion (live at the Zenith). As a big Powerwolf fan (my five year old twins have been asking for it every time we get in the car for years, so I don’t really have a choice anymore), and only a tiny Epica fan, I have to agree: Epicas rendition is better.
EPICA and POWERWOLF are two of my favorite bands, so this is amazing to me. EPICA has beautiful songwriting. POWERWOLF also has great songwriting and are the perfect feel good band.

The song "Resurection by Erection" should give you how serious they take the religious theme 😉
So fun and interesting thing about the covers album and getting Epica to cover "Sacred & Wild" for it is that the cover actually came first, and the idea sprouted from that. They have mentioned it in interviews! Here is an excerpt from one such interview: QUESTION: "As part of the album release, there will be a special three disc edition. One of those being a covers CD, how did you guys go about picking the bands for this covers album? " MATTHEW GREYWOLF: "Let me explain how the idea was born. It was a spontaneous thing; we toured with EPICA in 2017 and one day during soundcheck they played our song Sacred And Wild. During the after-show party, we asked them if they could imagine recording that. We originally didn’t have a covers album in mind, it was simply a case of that we liked their cover and we would like to hear it recorded. They were really up for it and liked the idea so they promised to do that. When we were back home from the tour, the idea started growing. We thought ‘What if we ask some more friends to do some covers. Back then, nobody thought that the idea would become a reality and now here we are with ten cover songs. It’s been an amazing project."
I do love Powerwolf. I'm not a major fan of Epica, but their version is on par with the original. both versions are really that good, I can't decide between then. I guess I like Epica's version because somehow it reminds me of Dianne van Giersbergen with Xandria. that's my 2 cents...
Just now seeing this vid, but the Epica version of this song is so freaking good. I blast it in my Jeep (which has an amazing sound system) and you feel the power in the song. I love epic powermetal metal. The female vocalist makes this more of an anthemic song. Also, the epica version has a couple of modulations that add more energy and evolution to the song. The orchestral parts also bring out that anthemic feel. Makes it a real battle cry/rally song. The child singing is okay, but it’s not great. Either way, the song absolutely slaps. One more thing about the female vocalist: if she had just a little more rage in her voice like the female who sings “A Rose For Epona” by Eluveitie, then the song would be completely unrivaled.
I’ll probably come across as an indecisive piece of shit because I do like both lol. Off topic, I’d like to hear some other female singers who have darker tone like Kobra Paige, Floor Jensen or even Noora Louhimo to cover this song in its original power metal rendition✌️ 😎

I am a huge Epica fan and only recently I became a huge Powerwolf fan only through Spotify recommendations from Some radio station that I was listening to recently. I wasn’t mad that I have heard this song from Epica first And then only recently I heard it from Powerwolf and either way I prefer Powerwolf! I love it because version, but I love the speed in Powerwolf that Epica Slow down. Epica also uses Latin in their songs, so I don’t know why they didn’t use the Latin like Powerwolf. I think Epica could’ve done a better job. I really do like the lyric video! Powerwolf feel satanic to me, by the way Epica also uses quite a bit of Christian imagery only in a critical manner so I think they’re very atheistic. Per Wolf could also be very atheistic. The two bands are actually quite similar!
I think that the general christian theme of powerwolf is not a particular religious thing. I think its more like other bands take parts from older relgions (like nordic or ancient greece mythologie). So its more of a artistic use of the relgious themes then actual religiousness.

First time hearing the Epica cover - gotta say it's an interesting sound( so was Amaranthe's Army of the Night)... But gotta give it to Powerwolf, the sound and voice just fit the song better in my opinion... Epica wins on guitar solo tho....
Powerwolf is like my favorite band.... I even have the Powerwolf boardgame, Armata Strigoi....lol... I think POwerwolf blows Epica away, sounds heavier and more powerful, and i think thats just Attillas amazing powerful voice... great job tho!!!
This is an unfair comparison. The Epica version you used was actually uploaded by Napalm Records, and the audio quality is way better than the one you used for the Powerwolf version which was made by a fan. Go ahead and listen to both versions on their CD quality audio and you will know why Powerwolf version is better. Epica's version is a good cover but lacks the punch and beat that the original version offers. When you want to jam with the song, nobody beats Powerwolf's version of Sacred &Wild. Even my eight-month old son stops and listens to Powerwolf when I play it. 😂
I think both songs didn't stand out too much. The original has a very traditional structure and does not particularly stand out in either instrumental or vocal performance, it might just be the recording was not done as carefully as it needed to be but I don't think there were too many redeeming qualities in the original. The lyrics of the song felt a little weird in places, especially the English leaves the impression that it did not get looked over by a professional. I don't think the song was bad nor do I want to devalue Powerwolf because they have great songs that I enjoy and the performance was far from bad there, I just thin there was just not much that stood out to me. Side note: I think the bible vs satanism debate is kind of unnecessary, Powerwolf are storytellers that want to tell great and epic stories containing werewolves and vampires, I doubt there is a greater message in this particular song. Going to Epica I feel like they took the song and turned it more into a traditional Power Metal piece by adding wild solos and then they tried to mix Simone Simon's voice with that and it did not really go as they thought it out to be. I wished they would've taken the song and made it their own, e.g. use Mark Jansen to growl parts, use the latin bridge from the original as they do in so many of their songs with their grand choir setup, take it a little more into the thrash direction. I think Simone's voice, while sounding generally great, needs to be more utilized in slower passages and on sustained notes than on fast lyrics, you could tell that she had trouble with the diction of the song. I think it was great that the tried to go out of their comfort zone though and the solos really fit the setting.
Well EPICA 's version is certainly more adventurous, compared to pretty "straight laced" POWERWOLF original. I especially loved how at the end (around 6:18) they actually change the words to "Fight, fight POWERWOLF / Fight, fight EPICA!", truly buying into the game. :))) POWERWOLF themselves have both more memorable and funnier songs than this one, imo. I always get a laugh out of some people's (even fans') misunderstanding of the POWERWOLF "philosophy", which is basically not Christian, and by any means NOT satanic - it is a gimmick in the name of good fun first and foremost. The very idea of Bible-thumping pack of werewolves selectively drinking the blood of heretics is too ridiculous to comment! Admittedly at (most) times it verges on blasphemous. :) If you do a POWERWOLF night, you should really listen to their track simply called "Resurrection by Erection"... yes, right. The band really pull all the stops there, and the result is hilarious. But a practicing Christian ought to be at least somewhat uncomfortable with the lyrics... unless they are the kind of "surface dwellers" that hear a hallelujah and think, oh this is religious. 8)
The only thing we evaluate is metal music 🎼💪🤘 And remember, we are the Metal *Academix*, that's the look we go for. It would have been cool though to be straight out of one of those TV series, CSY NY or Miami😲

Well don't originals win most of the times anyway, because, you know... And I am sure EPICA were not trying to operpower POWERWOLF. :) I was once at a concert in Brussels, where the two were touring together. They are on great terms among themselves. I can only say both bands are extremely fun to watch and enjoy themselves on stage to boot - while the music of each is distinctly recognizable and makes for a show of complete awesomeness!

Powerwolf also do the whole Latin dirty jokes thing. Try putting Coleus Sanctus into a latin to English translator ;)
I've seen and heard most of the Epica Latin translations over their albums and most of them are not dirty at all.

I do love Powerwolf. I'm not a major fan of Epica, but their version is on par with the original. both versions are really that good, I can't decide between then. I guess I like Epica's version because somehow it reminds me of Dianne van Giersbergen with Xandria. that's my 2 cents...
Just now seeing this vid, but the Epica version of this song is so freaking good. I blast it in my Jeep (which has an amazing sound system) and you feel the power in the song. I love epic powermetal metal. The female vocalist makes this more of an anthemic song. Also, the epica version has a couple of modulations that add more energy and evolution to the song. The orchestral parts also bring out that anthemic feel. Makes it a real battle cry/rally song. The child singing is okay, but it’s not great. Either way, the song absolutely slaps.
One more thing about the female vocalist: if she had just a little more rage in her voice like the female who sings “A Rose For Epona” by Eluveitie, then the song would be completely unrivaled.
Both are equal in my opinion. But my powerwolf bias gets in the way. XD
being a huge Epica fan I prefer the Symphonic Metal version but I wish Mark Jansen had done some growling on it ]:P

I am a huge Epica fan and only recently I became a huge Powerwolf fan only through Spotify recommendations from Some radio station that I was listening to recently. I wasn’t mad that I have heard this song from Epica first And then only recently I heard it from Powerwolf and either way I prefer Powerwolf! I love it because version, but I love the speed in Powerwolf that Epica Slow down. Epica also uses Latin in their songs, so I don’t know why they didn’t use the Latin like Powerwolf. I think Epica could’ve done a better job. I really do like the lyric video! Powerwolf feel satanic to me, by the way Epica also uses quite a bit of Christian imagery only in a critical manner so I think they’re very atheistic. Per Wolf could also be very atheistic. The two bands are actually quite similar!

I think that the general christian theme of powerwolf is not a particular religious thing. I think its more like other bands take parts from older relgions (like nordic or ancient greece mythologie). So its more of a artistic use of the relgious themes then actual religiousness.
Should be Epica vs. Nightwish. Epica will win every time. Edgier and Simone Simons just kills it, that voice is pure heaven.
Don't know why you would start with the cover first, but, good video.

This is an unfair comparison. The Epica version you used was actually uploaded by Napalm Records, and the audio quality is way better than the one you used for the Powerwolf version which was made by a fan. Go ahead and listen to both versions on their CD quality audio and you will know why Powerwolf version is better. Epica's version is a good cover but lacks the punch and beat that the original version offers. When you want to jam with the song, nobody beats Powerwolf's version of Sacred &Wild. Even my eight-month old son stops and listens to Powerwolf when I play it. 😂
I think both songs didn't stand out too much.
The original has a very traditional structure and does not particularly stand out in either instrumental or vocal performance, it might just be the recording was not done as carefully as it needed to be but I don't think there were too many redeeming qualities in the original. The lyrics of the song felt a little weird in places, especially the English leaves the impression that it did not get looked over by a professional. I don't think the song was bad nor do I want to devalue Powerwolf because they have great songs that I enjoy and the performance was far from bad there, I just thin there was just not much that stood out to me. Side note: I think the bible vs satanism debate is kind of unnecessary, Powerwolf are storytellers that want to tell great and epic stories containing werewolves and vampires, I doubt there is a greater message in this particular song.
Going to Epica I feel like they took the song and turned it more into a traditional Power Metal piece by adding wild solos and then they tried to mix Simone Simon's voice with that and it did not really go as they thought it out to be. I wished they would've taken the song and made it their own, e.g. use Mark Jansen to growl parts, use the latin bridge from the original as they do in so many of their songs with their grand choir setup, take it a little more into the thrash direction. I think Simone's voice, while sounding generally great, needs to be more utilized in slower passages and on sustained notes than on fast lyrics, you could tell that she had trouble with the diction of the song. I think it was great that the tried to go out of their comfort zone though and the solos really fit the setting.
i think, this one is almost a tie, but if u put a gun on my chest, id choose powerwolf, because i have 2 posters of them in my room :)

Well EPICA 's version is certainly more adventurous, compared to pretty "straight laced" POWERWOLF original. I especially loved how at the end (around 6:18) they actually change the words to "Fight, fight POWERWOLF / Fight, fight EPICA!", truly buying into the game. :)))
POWERWOLF themselves have both more memorable and funnier songs than this one, imo. I always get a laugh out of some people's (even fans') misunderstanding of the POWERWOLF "philosophy", which is basically not Christian, and by any means NOT satanic - it is a gimmick in the name of good fun first and foremost. The very idea of Bible-thumping pack of werewolves selectively drinking the blood of heretics is too ridiculous to comment! Admittedly at (most) times it verges on blasphemous. :)
If you do a POWERWOLF night, you should really listen to their track simply called "Resurrection by Erection"... yes, right. The band really pull all the stops there, and the result is hilarious. But a practicing Christian ought to be at least somewhat uncomfortable with the lyrics... unless they are the kind of "surface dwellers" that hear a hallelujah and think, oh this is religious. 8)

The instruments even sound more powerful and have that bellowing thunderous sound to match Attillas powerful baritone pipes!!!... I'm a rabid, see what i did there?... Well don't originals win most of the times anyway, because, you know... And I am sure EPICA were not trying to operpower POWERWOLF. :) I was once at a concert in Brussels, where the two were touring together. They are on great terms among themselves. I can only say both bands are extremely fun to watch and enjoy themselves on stage to boot - while the music of each is distinctly recognizable and makes for a show of complete awesomeness!
