excellent video, Zach! I loved seeing Sabine Weiss's work alongside Cartier-Bresson's, as I hadn't heard of her before and one can clearly see they were equally talented.
Then there is Martine Franck (married to Cartier-Bresson) and June Newton, wife of Helmut, whose work seems to me to be much better and less sexist than his. Great video and thank you.
Wonderfully enlightening Zach. It just goes to show how art is dependent on promotion, and how one career path can explode because of it whilst another may stagnate. We should all push to address this imbalance by improving the promotion of others than the non-white male. I know that I would appreciate a series on lesser known photographers in this respect, the ones that are not the common 'go-to's'
Thanks! In my Must Know Photographer playlist, I’m creating profiles on a diverse group of photographers. I have about 20 or so on TH-cam right now and a bunch more on TikTok I’ll be reformatting for here too.
Hey Zach this is a really great video and so incredibly relevant. There is a lot of progress still left to be made and videos like this really help. Thank you for choosing to be on the right side of history and for actively speaking out.
Equality of opportunity or equality of outcome? Sounds like forced equality. So there must be equal men, women, races, sexuality, culture and everything else. Where does it stop and can it actually be achieved?
I think this is an over analysis. You spend more time looking at a classist issue rather than one of gender. On Instagram people see the images first the artist second. These list post only very popular photographers. Alot of female photographers I know put out incredibly talented work but it often tends to be very personal or very intimate. Men tend to be crowd pleasers. The most liked photographs are usually very simplistic images that please everyone. Very similar and commercial or clichéd. Women tend to steer away from that type of work. Conscious and unconscious bias definitely exist. however I have been a photographer for 20 years and I have seen 3 types of photographers. The ones who come from money like henri cartier-bresson who have connections and can start with the best equipment. They have more time to hone their craft. They're usually very good photographers because they have had the best opportunities. Then everyone else breaks down into two types. The good hard working photographer and the bad photographer who's good at business. This covers men and women. But the thing I've noticed with male photographers is that they nearly all think they're the best and put themselves out there more. They're more overt and boast more and as a result get more opportunities. Call it a hangover of a male dominated society. Women work hard and are just as capable as photographers. But tend to not be nearly as overt. But i think men just shout louder about their work and then get featured more. People are more likely to higher a male photographer because of bias in everyday society. Therefore pushing them into more wealth and giving them more means and connections. There are very successful female photographers but like in every business you'll see less career women than men. The stats you show are really interesting. I'd be interested to see how they compare as earners/income.
I am noticing that you are trying to state as your focused and primary point that women photographers are being underrepresented. Perhaps relook at your word choice and some of the organization of your ideas because, it sounds more as though your argument is not looking for a solution that involves critical discussion in the field of professional representation. You are phrasing an attempt at forming an argument to persuade people of an issue, but then, you are creating a space for an arbitrary solution of simple mass representation in a field of art when people think critically about art. You use your evidence to produce an arbitrary solution. Currently, the pacing and organization of the ideas makes the argument fall flat and sounds more like base emotion and flat distaste. It does a disservice to your proposed ideal future. Perhaps a video that presents evidence like a journalist and leaves the solution open ended would be better in this case. A follow-up video on the furthering of research to service your community’s discussion would also help your argument and your desire for change.
How would you ever know if women aren't fairly represented? No one is arguing that the photographers send their images aren't great. It's a bogus list in terms of fair representation if 90% of their shares in 2023 where male. It isn't just that they are male, there is hardly any POC representation. So, are you going to say that you think white males are just better photographers?

Martine Franck is great! I’m not familiar with June Newton’s work. I’ll look it up!

Nice shirt. Good to see you dress up for these videos.

1:10 Maybe men are just better photographers….

@@simonpalmer1617 yes.
Are you suggesting that is impossible?
Here is a question:
Are you a Marxist?
If “no”, why do use Marxist language?
