    In 1999 DVD players for TVs were expensive. However DVD drives with MPEG card were much cheaper. And DVD drives without MPEG card were affordable. For those who wanted a cheap way to view DVD video disks, PowerDVD was a solution. It was easy to find the crack for Internet that removed the time trial. PowerDVD was light enough to let PCs with Pentium II 350MHz or AMD K6 II 350MHz decode MPEG2 video. Instead of paying 200$ for a typical DVD video player with just 50$ for a DVD driver I could watch DVD video disks. Also most DVD drives like DVD player for TV were locked to regions. However there were programs that cracked the region lock for DVD drives. Europeans could watch USA DVD video disks from their PCs earlier than the official european DVD release. Sometimes earlier than movie was showed in cinemas. Many video clubs were importing movies on USA DVD Video disks before the official european premier of the movies in Cinemas. It was an enjoyable era then.

      Stand-alone DVD players caught on much more quickly (pretty much from the get go) than PC DVD-ROM drives. That was why Netflix became successful early on. DVD-ROM drives didn't catch on until around 2004! Software and games were still being put on multiple CD-ROMs as late as 2003 -- because many people didn't have DVD drives yet.

    While DVD stand-alone players caught on quickly, DVD drives for computers did not. Most users simply didn't rush out to get DVD drives and thought CD drives would suffice. Software and games were still being put on CD-ROMs as late as 2003! Most productivity software rarely exceeded 700MB, and many users only had CD drives, so why would companies spend more on pressing DVD-ROM discs? Many games did exceed 700MB, but since most users didn't have DVD drives, game companies would release games on multiple CD-ROMs instead. This went on till 2004, when more people started buying computers that finally had DVD drives built-in. And the industry never went back to CD-ROMs again. This slow adoption of DVD drives in computers was like a mini tech bust at the time. The industry was pushing hard on watching DVD-quality movies on computers, but the public wasn't interested -- and they never really have been. There have always been more convenient and higher-quality means of watching movies elsewhere than on a computer.

      sony with its ps2 pushed DVD to its absolute limits, and then pc releases went on DVD from the early 00s

    • @oldtwinsna8347
      @oldtwinsna8347 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recall the cost differential was pretty considerable for the two up until about 2003. Like a CDROM drive could be bought for less than $30 while a DVDROM drive was 2-3x the price. Budget systems took an increasing role in the purchase decision of consumers so with the cost simply passed on, manufacturer's were more attracted to keep the CDROM drive in there.

      uh...at one point early on, it was actually cheaper to buy a DVD drive for a PC than a DVD player for your TV.

    It's hard to remember a time when watching a movie - not a low-res, pan/scan VCD - on your computer was a big deal. I used a DVD-drive for a couple of years before getting a DVD player.

    I have a Windows PC with a DVD-RW/CD-RW disc drive built-in that I can take my own MPEG video files to turn into standard DVD-Video discs and MP3 audio files to turn into standard CD-Audio discs. I really appreciate this technology for these discs can play better and last longer than the magnetic tapes. I even bought a Panasonic DVD Recorder that I am using to transfer old home videos to DVD-Rs in order to play them on standard DVD players. My old VHS VCR is clearly on its last years of usefulness.

    The most important about DVD R are that they are optical read only media. I still burn DVD Rs daily because of the read only nature of it. I don't have to worry about weird clouds doing bizarre things, I don't have to worry about Hard Disks crashing randomly when they are plugged in, I don't have much worries about anything with optical media, I find it extremely valuable. Many individuals are loosing their iinformation everywhere and don't even know why.
